My graphics skills leave much to be desired too

Shamelessly plugging daft's topictitle and idea...

Perhaps I can draw with pencil and paper, but that doesn't mean I can make computer graphics. I need a logo that can be printed on some shirts/blouses' backs.
The idea was an small island with 2 palm trees with a hangmat in between and the word "Exotieka". Behind a sun. I tried making it, but I really lack skill in drawing these kind of things. So I challenge you, massassians, to do better than me. This are the details:

  • It has to be black & white
  • It has to fit with the details I described above
  • Lines should be clear and thick
  • The picture shouldn't be too complex
  • No bigger than about 800x600
  • Deadline is monday/tuesday so time is short
  • end result in psp, photoshop, or any 'standard'-format (jpg, bmp, png)

To inspire you I decided to have a prize for the best contestant. Couldn't think of anything at first, but I eventually thought of the following prize: As some people might know I'm writing a book (from which most of my drawings were characters), and you'll get to be the first person besides me to read the Prelude.
So it's a quest of honour now :P

This was my try: http://www.xs4all.nl/~ceekelen/sketchexotieka.jpg

Not exactly stunning :(

I think a good approach would be vector graphics but unfortunately I know little about that. I have no doubt people with some PS, PSP or Gimp skills could do way better than that.

EDIT: It's ok to add other attributes of the same theme (parasol, cocktail) as long as the picture doesn't get too complex because of it.

DISCLAIMER: By participating/winning the contest you agree that you don't show the story to others ;)

I'm glad my thread title was deemed memorable, and heck, that's way better than anything I could (In MS Paint, mind you...) :p

If I was better at Vector Art and Freehand, that'd be a sinch to do. But as my skills in that area stand, it'd take me hours of frustration to do it. Basic things dealing with vectors are easy for me, that, is not.

But that's how I'd go about doing it, in a vector art program.

Did I mention the fact that the winning logo will be worn on a shirt by 10 people for the next ~6 years?

Just out of curiosity...

When you say black and white, do you mean just those two colours? Or do you mean greyscale?

I may or may not give this shot, that is a fierce deadline though...so I was just wondering.

Well, they are both submachineguns...uzi is more like a product name, though, not a type of weapon.

I like guns. But anyway, nice picture, seems very "basic" and down to the subject, i like it. :)

Might be too complex, but that's my style and your problem :p (actually, I might be persuaded with pie bribes to redo some of the more complex bits).

That's awesome!

My only possible complaint would be that the word exotica should jump out more so it's readable well at bigger distances.

Don't know if anyone else is actually even trying, but I just thought I'd mention that tomorrow evening (Central European Standard Time) is the deadline, so far Daeron's the only (serious) contestant and thus winner.

Daeron, would you mind if I alter your drawing a bit? I want to change to a font that jumps out more, the rest will stay as it is.

Sure, I'll give it a try tomorrow. It isn't actually a "font" per say, at least not in the pre-made sense. I drew it, note for instance how the two E's are quite different.

I think I'll make the whole thing a tad wider, so that the first and last letters don't get cut off, and make the text outline a pixel or two thicker.

Yeah that is better. I'll know if we use it for sure after tomorrows meeting.
