http://www.mzzt.net/index2.php

So far it is XHTML 1.1 and CSS complant, and it will display correctly in Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Opera and all derivatives.

If you have another browser (Safari? Konqueror?) let me know how it renders it. :)

I made all the graphics myself in GIMP, with the exception of the avatars.

So, whatdya think so far?

No, I knew about that. :) I didn't make those pages yet.

New pages are up now, whee.

I have a problem with the way you display the news items - I think there should be some obvious link between the title bar and the text of the news. At first, I didn't realise the 'Spread Firefox' title and the post were linked, so tried clicking on the title and instead of going to a page with the post on, it just made something I thought was unrelated disappear

I'd suggest you fix this by one of these ways:
  • Indenting the news post, this way it doesn't merge with all the other titles beneath. You could also increase the gap between the bottom of the post and the next title
  • Having the post appear in the same box, with a divider between the title and text.

I'd suggest you use CSS to get that supersized console text style you're using for the header, rather than use an image, as that'll cut down your filesize incredibly.

Also, I don't particularly like it when a page tells me my IP address and browser:
  • It feels like an invasion of privacy
  • There's no point to it - I know which browser I'm using
  • I'm not impressed that you know how to look at the HTTP headers. That you apparently think visitors should be impressed (as there really is no other reason for doing it) is a poor reflection on your respect for visitors' intelligence.

Apart from those gripes, I like it! (And apologies if that last bit sounded too harsh :))

[Edit: Also, why should we care how long the page took to generate or how many SQL queries were used? I'd just can that whole 'Useful Information' section - it's not useful at all]

The MySQL thing I can understand, that's useful for determining whether your script is efficient or not.

But as for the IP and such, that really is useless information.

You need an expand all button. And I don't like the color scheme that much. But it is a nice change for sure.

There's no reason for it to be left in for visitors though. That could be written to a log if it was important it be kept track of.

So this is a case of "What you don't know won't hurt you?" :p Sorry, but some people (me included) might want to see this information... :) Not only that, it makes some people AWARE that these things are being shared.

It's not private information because your browser freely shares it with every server. :)

And as for the seperators, I will consider doing something to make the page more logical with reguard to the expand/contract buttons.

As for the MySQL count, that's mostly trivial... it's why I put it there. Because I can. :)

My current dev version also has a pages served counter down there, which should be more useful. :p

I'll probably adjust the nav bar so it appears horizontally below the titlebar... I might want to add more pages in the future.

And thanks for the feedback guys! :)

I like the appearance of the new one more, but it's making poor old Netscape 7.1 (my parents have yet to install FireFox on the only internet-connected computer in the home) cry out in pain. And why did you have to try to disable the right-click menu? You were less than successful, and it has now messed up the appearance of everything. And shouldn't the Pokemon avatar by FireFox be a "vulpix" (A "Fire Fox" Pokemon... I think) or something?

As for the user information, I don't mind seeing it at all... IP addresses are very easy to find. My only beef about it is that it lists the user agent as "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win 9x 4.90; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624 Netscape/7.1 (ax)", which seems to make little sense for me. Does you page scan the serial number of the CPU as well? (For fools that are using Intel processors, which freely hand this out to web sites that ask for it)

I'm afraid you're mistaken, the right click menu is not disabled. I hate those scripts with a vengence (I have Firefox disable them :D). There must be a problem with your Netscape installation.

And as for the avatars, they are supposed to match my forum avatar, which is a random Pokemon. :) They're not supposed to match up with the contents of the post... nice idea though, lol. :)

And I dunno anything about the CPU thing. There is no such function in PHP and I doubt there ever will be.

From a design standpoint the site is bleh.
The noise filter on everything doesnt go over well. I dont like the purple color with the yellow text.
Personally I dont think Fixedsys is a font to be used for a website.
The layout at the top doesnt make sense to me. The home buttons and stuff just seem like they are out of the way.

Another note: when using IE 6.0, collapsing the main "News" heading prevents any of the sub-headings from showing any contents; it just shifts the position of the bars when clicking on them.

*reproduces* BLEH, IE sucks :/ I'll see if I can fix it later.

It's not my fault I have to walk nearly a mile to use a computer with FireFox installed! (the library computers are deep-frozen with crap, and the campus computer lab is an inconvenience to reach)

I think you're trying to go for the old school look to it. 8-bit graphics, Fixedsys font, ridiculously quick load times (on cable). It can be done. I applaud you for doing so. But the purple man. THE PURPLE! It doesn't clash with yellow. My high school colors were once purple and gold, now it's purple and white and use the gold for highlight color. Purple and white looked MUCH better. You might try that. Also...it has too many "bars." It is the best thing I can describe the style of the background. Also, dump the "useful[less] information." 85% of the personnel visiting your site probably will not care what their COMPLETE browser string is nor their IP address. That's "show off" stuff that says "LOOKIE LOOKIE WHAT I CAN DO!" Meh. No one cares.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.
