...and it looks like crap.

I'm trying to make a transition area for Life of Grismath 03 to get from the bottom of a cliff to the top. I had been playing the Men of Valor MP demo, and was inspired to redo the city features in LoG03. But I thought I needed better textures, so I downloaded Remedy's Max Payne set. When I went through these, however, I was inspired to make an old, run-down manor. I then had a flooding cog with rising water that I had originally intended to use in a different area, and so I added water to this.... to make a long story short, I wasted several hours of my life on what ended up was sour eyecandy.

I originally had REALLY shibby lighting in here with an eye of Sauron effect going on on the floor, but I ditched that to add to the watery effect.

And here's the castle with that heavy rain that I'ms till working on and have been too lazy to add black splotches to.

What's wrong with it? I think you're hours were well invested - seriosuly, those first two shots almost look like they could be JO. ;)

Regardless of appearances, though, this area really doesn't contribute to GAMEPLAY, which is the main focus of Life of Grismath.

That flooded room does look nice... Comparable to say, Q3A engine games (such as JA). However, the context of that house underground doesn't look too good, so I'm not to able to give a good opinion of it (it seems to be surrounded by complete blackness, where it might be better to be able to see a rocky wall or two.)

The rain still looks good, but it will definitely look even better after you fake some transparency. I'm starting to really kick myself for not having MotS here... I'll have to remember to get it off of eBay or somewhere when I actually have the money to buy it...

How many light sources does your average cave have? :/ I have rock walls everywhere, but you just can't see them. I'll try illuminating it some more- wait, no, I don't think I'm going to use this at all. :P

I had a really dramatic area (or at least it was dramatic in JED) where there was a staircase and an overlook plaftorm, where the water was translucently cascading down into a lower level, but in-game, the translucency made the water look too transparent to notice it, and it looked silly when it was a solid texture.

Usually, the average cave has zero lightsources, so even the house wouldn't be visible.:p

That cascading water platform sounds like a ncie idea. Perhaps a thought: you could try putting lights under the water, to illuminate it and give it more atmosphere. If there are other walls/ceiling above the water, you could add a (transparent) animated texture of light reflecting/distorting from the water.

damn.. i was hoping that this was a random MP map with a creepy theme... and when I saw the screenshots I was like.. WOAH, and it's done well... but then I realized it was for LoG and for MotS, and I sighed cause I would never get to play it.
