...where you will find Marco's Bistro.

Anyone who has played GTA3 or seen the intro cutscene to Vice City should know what this is. Its's a restaurant up on the hill by salvatore's mansion on Portland Island.

I loved the sign in front of it, so when I had to do a project in Adobe indesign for a class at uni, I decided to make a menu for Marco's bistro.

This is a W.I.P. of my menu design for this class assignment. I plan to print it on legal-size paper, glue the pages to construction paper, and then laminate it so it will look just like a real menu, and put it together like a book. I would then include it in my portfolio. This sounds better than cutting matboard for it, b/c I feel that matting it would be a s***ty aproach. It's supposed to be a menu, so it should be displayed like one, right?

I haven't gotten much done on it yet (I just started it today). i'm using Adobe Indesign 2.0 to lay everything out, and I'm making the graphics for it in Photoshop and Illustrator.

It's kind of large to take screenshots of and keep detail, so I made a pdf:

http://www.pwizard.com/marcosbistro.pdf

1.16 mb-- even you 56k people can do it.

Comments/questions welcome.

The menu will have a Lunch/dinner section, a drinks section, and a dessert section, as well as a front and back page.

This is the most creative idea I've ever seen. Fantastic. I just think you need some more content in the statement on the first page. It's very wordy as is, and says very little. Almost cheesy. If it's meant to be realistic, it'll need to be tweaked.

It gets the job done, but thats about all it does. I like the idea though.

keep the comments coming, people....

How do the graphics / font choices look?

I know that it is generally aesthetically pleasing to use no more than 2 typefaces for any one document, and i believe that I chose two that work well together. What do you think?

I'm flattered. Really, I am.

I just threw together the intro text as a rough draft type thing (kind of like how some people use lorem ipsum text as a placeholder) . i plan to go back and refine it some more.

Fixed.

I may increase the price. I'm going to go to the library and
get some Italian cookbooks so I can populate the menu with authentic items.

Its hard to really critique it as theres not much there. Youre not really doing much out of the ordinary here yet. As far as the fonts and what not, they flow well, but that to a designer is about as monumentous as brushing your teeth. The graphics are clean and look good, but resemble something a non-designer could pull up using PrintShop. 10 or 12 years ago that would be a compliment, but today the likeness is so overused its associated with amateur design.

I'm sorry if I'm being a little straight forward, you just need to really work on developing your ideas further. With this and even your site design, you have a good start, don't get me wrong, but now you need to start pushing the limits of the design. Even if it means turning out the ugliest thing possible then having to start over again from scratch.

Going through design school my teachers were constantly telling me its ok to steal aspects and ideas from other designers. I gotta say, its good advice for beginning artists, but as a professional, what originality are you going to be able to offer by basing your work on another's idea? And whats to stop clients from seeing that designer rather than yourself.

Just some food for thought. Don't settle for conformity of the majority, leave that for PTA meeting flyers and student government posters.

Good Luck
