Grand Temple of Fire (JA CTF style)
2004-10-24, 7:36 AM #1
Well, I'm back to editing after a two-year hiatus, with my latest project being a Jedi Academy CTF map that will have bot support if it kills me.

After much brainstorming, I ended up going back to my roots, so to say, and have decided to create another Yavin temple-themed map, similar to my previous somewhat-successful Arena of Fire and Grand Temple of Fire Jedi Outcast maps. Right now the working title is Grand Temple of Fire CTF, but it could change later on.

I haven't done an incredible amount of work on the level yet, but I've got the basic central area of the map done, along with the entrance to the blue base. The central area is rather small compared to other CTF maps, but my plan is to have the bases be relatively large, along with a cool underground tunnel system connecting the bases eventually. Still, this is going to be a somewhat small CTF map, but nothing to spit at.

And for those who complained in my previous two fire levels about the fire not hurting you....NOW IT DOES!

Anyway, some of the prelimary screenies, brightened for your viewing pleasure:

Looking at the entrance to blue base.

Panoramic view of the central area.

Inside the entrance room in blue base. (between the compression and the brightening, you can barely see the statue between those two pillars, but there's one there)

Another outside shot looking at the sky and blue base.

So, nothing incredible so far, but I figured I'd get some initial feedback and just let everyone know that I'm back (not sure if that's a good thing, though :p )

edit: Looking at it now, it appears I compressed the screenies too much. I've gotta run now, but I'll work more on the level later and post better quality screens. Sorry....:o

Oh, and if anyone knows where to get any good bot support tutorials for dummies, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Yeah, pretty bland.

Why Yavin? Seriously.

Thanks for the bot route tutorial.

Yeah, pretty bland at the moment. I'm trying to think of ways to spice it up.

As for why Yavin temple-themed, I figured I had success with my previous two maps with that theme, and simply couldn't formulate an idea for a good level with a different theme. The only other thing I could think of was Bespin-themed, but then I thought definitely no way, so this was my best choice.

The inner chamber entrance to the blue base is definitely going to be spiced up, but I'm not quite sure what to do with the central outside area...?

I probably shouldn't have even bothered to post this with so little work done on it, but whatever. I'll try to work more on it later and put more detail in it.

I agree with GothicX, the archi that you have is alright, but there is just way too little of it.

Try to think of ways to break up large flat surfaces.

For example the ground is one flat surface.
You can make stone paths in it, maybe build out of indivitual hexagon shaped tiles, maybe some nice paterns in it, don't be shy and use google image search go get some ideas.
Maybe make a pond in the middle (perhaps with a bridge), a gazebo, some statues, a shrine. Make the ground uneven, and terasses, shrubberies, you name it.

The walls on the outside are boring as hell too. The top is completely flat, maybe add battlements, maybe let them stick out a bit like this: image
There are thousands of things you could add.

For those who remember my last level, Grand Temple of Fire, it had a large temple\ziggurat\pyramid type of thing in the center of it, and I plan on constructing a similar thing for each team's flag base. However, that won't be for a while, as the flag bases will be the furthest things from the center, and I'm building from the center outward.

I'm starting some work on the underground caverns\tunnel system, and will probably have some sort of large healing pool in the center. Speaking of that, how would I go about making a healing trigger? Use a negative amount of damage for trigger_hurt?

Hmmm....I like that idea. I'll try to implement some of these things and post some updates tonight.

Looks like your off to a good start... my only suggestion is to add some archi to those flat walls in the first 2 shots.

i think it looks perfect. nice work man.
"Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?" And the angel said unto me, "These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots! You see, Reverend Maynard, tomorrow is harvest day and to them it is the holocaust."

I think the temple of fire theme has been overused. It is fast becomng cliche.

New screens:

Electricity pit thingy in the underground area under blue base. The hole in the roof allows the electricity to shoot up to the entrance area to blue base, as seen in the second to last screen.

Outside central area. MUCH more detail than last time.

Outside area again, this time standing on battlement thingy.

Entrance area of blue base. The electricity from the underground area comes up through a hole in the floor area. Not too much more detail from last time, other than this electricity thingy and the two statue heads on the wall.

Standing on steps of red base entrance looking toward blue base.

Thanks! I'm still kind of unsure what to do with the base entrance room, cause it still looks a little plain, but I'm real happy with how the outside central area turned out.

Production on the level is going kind of slow because of school and other things, but I'll see if I can do some major work on it tomorrow.

don't use -1 for your trigger.

I use DMG 5 for the trigger_hurt for the fire. But how would I go about making a healing trigger?

Here are the latest screens:

Updated shot of blue base entrance area. Nothing too much new since last time I don't think.

Outside central area shot.

Underground area in blue base.

Different angle in underground area. Doorway in the right part of the screenshot is going to lead off to another tunnel and another part blue base. There is another doorway not seen in the screenshot, which will also lead off in a different direction.

Looking down partially completed stairway which leads up to battlement on side of central outside area. You can also see the entrance to this stairway in the second shot.

edit: Forgot to brighten them, but whatever. Hopefully they are bright enough for you guys to see.

Good indeed, but you might want to put a blazing inferno in the map somewhere. =D It is a Grand Temple of Fire after all.

You poopie! I was working on it like last year for JO, but then got to lazy to retexture everything.

Nice to see you back.

Looks...burny.

Skybox isn't good. It's from the corescant map, and there is a "glow" in the sky that is supposed to be caused by the city lights. It doesn't fit the map... a darker night sky is needed.

Looks good tho, other than that, I guess...

2004-10-30, 7:26 AM #21
I've been kind of busy lately and haven't done much work on it, and might not be able to do much work on it in the near future, so you might not see any updates for a while. I don't plan on letting this project die by any means, but it might be delayed for a while.

I'll try to find a better skybox, although I don't really notice this "glow" that you're talking about, but whatever, I'll play around with other ones and see if I can find a better one.

the glow he talks of is the haze you see in the skybox. The fact that it's not pitch black. This phenomena is only seen in places where there is a lot of light coming from the surface of the planet. Like around cities. I figure it's because the streetlights reflect against the dust and watermolecules in the air.
