I liked the first shot of the room better; the lighting, that is.

Thanks for the replies!

I got bored with modeling and texturing, so I did some animation for a change. This is a first pass on one of the scenes. Still plenty of work to do on it though.

Cute little test ;)

Have you done any animation before? I would experiment more with timing movement on basic objects before doing character animation (MASTER the bouncing ball, stretch and squash, ease in/out, follow thru and overlapping action, path of action, anticipation, exaggeration, etc.) I hope you're not autotweening anything either, because it makes things look like crap in 3d.

The character bounces a little high off the ground (alot high). I like what you have going with him blinking as he changes focus with his eyes, add in a slight head turn aswell as something happening with the body (instead of stiffness), that should shine it up. Keep posting! :D

(edit) Of course, work on your posing aswell, go for a little more natural. ie: his head lands kinda dead on, and settles dead on aswell. Lay down on the ground and see how un-natural that is, especially since you just fell 12-15 ft.)(/edit)

you have to remember that this is mars. gravity < 1g.

therefore you bounce higher.

Yes, but you'd also stay in the air longer.

The impact does need work -- his head in particular doesn't seem to impact the ground very hard.

However, his recovery and looking around after landing is pretty cool. I wants to see more.

Spent all day working on this...time for a break.

Still a bit to add to the end of it, as well as lots of tweaking and little details. Comments?

Nifty. The little guy's got character. He's cool.

I think I've figured out what I don't like about that bounce there when he hits the floor -- it's that he goes straight up and down and lands flat. It looks kinda stiff. The important thing to remember, I think, is that all parts of the body should always be in motion, especially in a dynamic scene like this one.

But anyway, I realize you're still figuring out the basics and suchlike. I look forward to seeing where this is leading.

Oh my god, I just wrote so much feedback, and the file size was too big so I lost it all! GRRRRRRR!!!!!

Ok here goes, in a nutshell this time hopefully

I'm attaching a gif animation (quick and dirty, the way I like it), and a sample storyboard.

The animation is demonstrating anticipation and arcs, notice the head moves down in anticipation for the up+turn, and that there's an arc associated with that too. Avoid point A->B animation, use arcs where appropriate (ALWAYS, unless it's a robot). I also showed some 'going past', meaning that I overshot the pose by one frame, then settled into the final pose, adding some feeling to it. This is also called exaggeration.

It sounds like common sense, and it might sound like I'm talking down to you, but it has to exist in your animations, even it the most subtle movements, all of the principles.

Break your shots up into something like that awesome storyboard I drew ;) I think it's pretty self explanatory.

I start my job on Monday so I probably won't be able to comment quite as much, ask questions now if you got 'em! Or anytime really, I'll just be much busier. Hope this is helpful

Cheers!

Alrighty guys (I hope you're not too bored of this animation yet)

I've added more to the monster falling, as well as a reaction of the martian. I'm planning on cutting from this to a closeup of more of the martian's reaction.
