Hello Everybody.

As some of you already know, I have been working with a team for the last year and a half on an animation. We're hoping to get it on TV, but I'm not sure if it'll ever get that far. If nothing else, I'm glad to be working on it for the experience of working on a team and because now I have some nice models for my portfolio.

As of yesterday the company released a trailer to the internet. I'd like to get your opinions on it as well as on my modeling. Here's the link to the trailer:

And the models I made so far: (sorry if I make people scroll)

Note: I'm on limited bandwidth here at school, so if I get near my limit I'll have to take down the files for a bit. Don't waste my bandwidth....thanks.

Another note: This show is meant for kids and it is fiction. So please don't point out scientific errors in it like some people have....it's fiction just like all other children's cartoons.

You rock hard. The trailer was pretty good. It looks great for what it is. The only turn off was some of it looked a bit rushed and some of the animation kind of looked unfinished.

Anywho, about what you did. I like all the models, the texturing on the first two looks meh, but when I see them in the trailer it seems to fit in. Reminds me of re-boot somehow. Good work!
Think while it's still legal.

Yeah, that one was hard to design. They wanted something that could change between a spaceship and a character that could walk around and show emotion. I ended up going for the 'big protective pet elephant/dinosaur feel'....not sure how well I managed it :p

Well...i dont want to be rude...But if you want to send it out on T.V...I have some ideas...

1. Seriously, do something about the walking animation, and do something about shadows, because sometimes, it almost looks like they are floating on the planet.
2. Do a serious retexture job. I am not saying that its bad or something. But it doesnt fit well in a serious program
3. Great idea...Great concept...

I know, i dont know **** of the whol thing. And look at these points as VERY CRITICAL ideas. Because i really like it. But if you want it to send it out on tv...Work on it.

P.S dont know if i hurt you...not the meaning...:p

I agree with you on this. I didn't do any of the animation, but the animation does need some work. The shots in the trailer are not final, so they still have another pass of animation to make them look beautiful. As of right now a lot of shots are going through final animation passes and are looking a lot better.

Thanks for everyone's comments. For those who commented on the texturing, what don't you like about it? I'd be interested to hear...

Forgot about this one. It's not finished yet, but this is what I have so far:

EDIT: Just so nobody asks, it's supposed to be a futuristic radio.

That is a nice show. Realy like it. True, the feet 'slip' a little on the ground, but what kid will notice that.

Well, it would be nice to not have those errors. In a sence, this show could show how space actually works and become rocket scientist when they are older. But true, 500 years from now, things can change. Engines might be more powerful, large ships might be able to turn on a nickle.
Just my opinion.

Awesome work! I probably would've loved it as a kid.

A few points of suggestions though:

1) As mentioned some of the animations didn't seem quite finished yet and needed a bit of touching up.

2) Some of the voices didn't leave much impact. I liked those of the robot-thingy and the two little creatures at the end, but those of the main character and the chick-in-charge and especially those of the narrator didn't seem to really fit.

3) the colourcorosion on the first two models seems a bit excessive.

Keep up the great work!

Dude. You win. End of story. Man that looks cool, I know for sure I would have watched that when I was a kid. Even now I laughed at the part where the eyeball thing knocked over the village, that was great. Great job, really great, I hope to see Far Star on TV soon! :)

Oh yeah, and one more thing. The models are freaking amazing. I love everything about them except for one thing. On that woman, and the red guy, and the main character, you should do something with their visors. They look really plain, maybe make the actual helmet cover up more of the visor and have not the whole face being the visor or something. I just recommend doing something different with the visors to make them less plain and you would get a 100% in my book. This is at a 98% right now :)

About the visors: After being turned down by a few networks, we decided to follow their suggestion and make the characters have faces. Right now we're modeling faces for the characters to go underneath their visors. This'll hopefully create characters that the audience can connect with more easily.

Thanks for all the comments so far!

Very nice for an amateur team!

Personally I'd say that the designs that you've contributed are the best ones and look most sophisticated. Regarding the animation, I'd just say that the eyeball pet-thing's walking animation needs a little work, at least on the part where they've just landed and are walking across the vast landscape. The thing seems to have both legs on either side in the air at the same time which would make it collapse, wouldn't it? Try looking at a lizard's or maybe an elephant's step pattern.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

yeah, i was going to say that about the characters. Faces are very important in storytelling, especially with kids. glad to see you're on that. no complaints, and at 20 yrs old, i'd watch it.
My girlfriend paid a lot of money for that tv; I want to watch ALL OF IT. - JM

that first model.......well see, the human models seem more like robots than humans, i'm sure a lot of this is in the animation, which, undoubtedly, you will become increasingly proficient in.

secondly, it has a very sappy feel to it. Maybe you intended this.

Third... Texture work, yah. That's spaceship really doesn't have any texture on it does it? Isn't it just gray and blue/green?

and oh btw, when he says 'what have i done?' he sounds EXACTLY like tobey maguire in spider man. o.O it's uncanny.
2004-11-14, 7:36 PM #25
I didn't intend for him to look robotic, but I guess it came out that way. Hopefully when they have faces that'll help take away from that. Again, please note that I didn't do any of the animation in this trailer.

The sappy feel...I see where you're coming from, but I didn't have much say in this.

Textures on the ship, the picture I posted had no textures. In the trailer, the texture job in it was not mine.

Keep the comments coming, I love hearing your opinions.

Dude... release the eyeball as a JA vehicle. Heh. That was awesome. I would watch it.

-The sappy tone kinda helps the storyline, as far as I understand it.
