Let's say you take 2 tests, both worth 100 points.
You get 95% on the first test (which, for the sake of simplicity, is 95 points), and, due to an extra credit question, got 105% on the second test (105 points, 21 questions answered correctly, out of 20 normal questions and 1 extra credit, so 21/20). You'd have 100% of the points required to get a 100% A grade.
The same is true if the two tests were 200 points, you'd just have earned 190 and 210 points (assuming the % of correct answers listed before).
Also, this is assuming these 2 tests make up the whole grade.
In other words, if, where he said 105 he meant 105%, it just meant his instructor felt he had gone above and beyond what was requested, and so was awarded extra credit.
