In 1999 Massassi was created. A site dedicated to editing the game known as Jedi Knight.
Between 1999 and 2001 the Jedi Knight editing community was booming, Massassi became popular almost instantly.
Levels, mods, and other things Jedi Knight related were submitted to Massassi every single day.
The forums were incredibly popular as well. New members were accepted after a slight period of hazing. There was even a secret forum called The Forum of ****** that only a few Massassians knew of. The forum of ****** didn’t really worry about enforcing rules, this place was spam city.
After a while things started slowing down, members weren’t joining as fast as they were before, everyone knew everyone else. The Showcase Forum, which used to be just as full as the Discussion forum started to become a wasteland.
Massassi was going downhill. Certain members started picking on other members, debates would constantly go out of control, and the forum administrators would just sit back and watch. Some members started getting aggravated. Many people left the forums, but some people just couldn’t leave.
The Forum of ****** started to stir trouble as well. Members of the Forum of ****** started to give themselves numbers. 1 of 14….2 of 14…etc. Soon they got out of control and people started to get curious and angry.
As bad as things seemed, Massassi still had hope…
In 2002, Five years after the release of Jedi Knight the highly anticipated sequel Jedi Outcast was released. All the game magazines raved about how amazing it was…but Massassi was not impressed.
Then again how could they be? Jedi Knight was a classic, and to make a great sequel to it would be impossible.
People edited Jedi Outcast for a while, but not even a year later it died down. During the Jedi Outcast period, more people started to join Massassi. It was almost like the old days of Jedi Knight…
Soon after the failure of Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy was released in 2003. Half of the Massassians seemed happy, while the other half dismissed it as a failure.
Around late 2003 to 2004, Jedi Knight starts to come back with the release of new mods and levels. Nothing major is released, but enough to keep Jedi Knight chugging along.
In late 2004 Massassi was bigger then ever. New features, new forums, and new members start to arrive. But not all was good.
The people that got flamed and bashed refused to leave. They felt that they had a right to be at massassi. Most people wouldn’t leave massassi, it had started to take some people over. The Massassi forums could be refreshed every 5 seconds and a new post would have been made within that time. People started to argue and rules started to get tighter. Things that would have slipped in the early days of massassi weren’t accepted anymore. ‘Noob hazing’ came to a halt. Debates were closed more often, people were getting banned over smaller things, the Forum of ****** closed and Massassi almost closed as well.
By late 2005 a Jedi Knight mod using Jedi Acadamy was in the works. Lucas Arts found it and stopped it in it’s tracks. Massassi kept losing opportunities to get back in the game.
Massassi was losing all of it’s dedicated members, it was dieing slowly. Noone wanted to pay for massassi anymore. It was just wasted space..until mid 2006 Massassi made the big decision to branch out to other games. All of the Jedi Knight files were removed, a new website design was put up and Massassi joined the rest of the world in Unreal 3 editing.
Unreal 3 was the biggest game anyone had ever seen. PC Gamer called it ‘The Best Game Ever Made’. It weighed in at a whopping 15 GB, and cost $60 at it’s release.
At first noone thought Massassi could come back. They were wrong. It was just like with Jedi Knight at first, levels and mods started pouring in just as soon as people could get the game installed. Things were looking up for massassi.
By 2007, massassi was already in 18th place for the most visited websites on the internet. Massassi was mentioned in just about every game magazine there was, and it even went as far as Tech TV and FOX news. Things were going smoothly and on top of that Unreal Tournament 2X8 was announced.
After many delays in 2008, UT2X8 was released, boosting massassi even more.
Massassi had well over 200,000 members, and what most people thought was just 15 seconds of fame ended up lasting a whole lot longer.
Soon Massassi got too big. It was nearly impossible to pay for the website even with all of the donations they were getting. Something had to be done… By late 2009 massassi got a plan to sell accounts to people. It worked. 170,000 people paid 10 dollars each to stay a member at massassi. That’s $1,700,000. By 2010, massassi had gained another 60,000 members, and was even MORE popular..if you even imagine that.
Soon Massassi was more popular then Google and Yahoo combined. It had it’s own e-mail service, search engine, it’s community was open to editing just about any game you could think of, and it even had a bi-monthly magazine. In 2011, George Lucas sued Massassi for it’s name. Due to the overwhelming amount of money and power massassi had, they won the fight. Noone expected such a thing to happen.
The year is now 2014, Massassi charges members 5 dollars per month, and they require a finger print test to log in now. How much larger can this beat possibly grow? Will it be the downfall of the internet, or the uprising of a new age online? No one knows for sure, but one thing is for sure, Massassi will never be forgotten.
