I have a semi story/movie concept...

AND I wANT YOUR THOUGHTS!!! Because it probably sucks but I thought it could make a good movie.

I've been thinking about it, lately.
I came to the conclusion that there is little storytelling in movies anymore. So much is about action and huge effects, it's difficult to find a movie or TV show with really good storytelling.

I made myself a motto: There is no substitude for good storytelling.

So I came up with this loose concept of a movie idea.

It's Star Wars, without the Star Wars.

I want to capture the space adventure with a cast of believable and interesting characters and humor and action, but make a totally unique and "new" story with, hopefully, new concepts.

I mean, everything's been done, so you'd have to try hard to find or make something new...usually.

So here's the cast of characters:
The main character: Luke, a regular guy caught up in a situation. Not luke, but still. Similar. He's not vital to the story, like in Star Wars, but the story will revolve around him, like he's involved in a bigger picture without having a big part. He just happens to be there, or he's stuck there, or something. Think sly boots from anachronox. He doesn't want to be tehre, but he'll save the universe if he can. Slightly witty...I always liked sly boots.

The Old Guy: Imagine Han Solo...at year 75. He's a veteran. He's cranky, he's old, he's experienced, and he's just been pulled out of his recent retirement. He'll be the one with wisdom, but he will be very, very senile. Also a comic relief. Rough and Tough. You'll either stare in disbelief at his toughness, or laugh at his crankyness to common sci-fi situations. he can fly the ship or fire the gun, whatever. He's experienced and senile, that's what's important.
(Why would you fly a ship next to a spacial anomoly? You damn teenagers!... or whatever)

The Droid: Imagine C-3PO blubbering his random gibberish, interpreting and what not. Imagine R2D2 fixing a wall circuit, or trying to open adoor. now imagine they're the same droid, or robot, or whatever, but all in one. Now, imagine it's faulty, commonly making mistakes. And you're stuck with it. That's right, you can't get rid of it. He's with you and theres no way you can get rid of it, you're still trying to decide whether or not to scrap it. It's annoying as hell, but sometimes it really really helps out...just not always at ther ight time. This thing and the old guy will have lots of funny moments.

The girl:
Not princess leia, but more like Lee-la (SP?) from futurama. With 2 eyes of course, but more of a nicer person, with experience in futuristic ways. Somewhat mysterious, she might have a bigger part in the overall story. Kinda like that one girl from FFVII... (ok, I haven't beat it yet). She's really nice, but she's got some kind of wierd power. I'm thinking a Black Jumpsuit is her trademark, like she's almost goth looking, but she's not goth at all in actuallity.

The savior:
Anyone see Dreamcatcher by stephen king? Remember the retard guy? THe one with all sorts of mysterious powers?
Let's have that, but less comprehensible, and a midget.
He's a big part of the story, but you can't figure out why because he's always mumbling random crap that makes no sense. He can be funny too. I'm thinking he'll be with everyone, but no one knows why. Everyone talks about him ,and you dont figure out his motives til the end, or midway, or something.

The twins:
You can't, you just can't, take sci-fi serously anymore. So you've got a couple mysterious silent twin boys, identical twins. You talk to them, they dont' talk back, you try to explain things to them, they don't respond. Think the two little girls from "The gReat Outdoors". They're there for no reason, but they're funny, and they help out sometimes.

The Ship:
A kick-arse flight of the navigator-type ship.
Sleek, and metallic on the outside, nearly reflective. Shiny. But it's gotta have some non-shiny parts too, like maybe a catwalk on the top for whatever reason.

i'm thinking the ship is something like this:

____outside____|__insides____ FRONT
CATWALK DOOR BRIDGE
GUN CW WALL BRDIGE
CATWALK DOOR BRIDGE
__outside______|__inside____ FRONT

top deck :P

Ok, I'm really, really bored, I admit, I don't even have the story.

I was thinking something along the lines of mixing nanotechnology with quantum physics into some kind of new technology.

Like a fear of inter-parallel dimension nanomachines coming into the universe

Or perhaps...nanoclouds, like real ones. They act on their own, but I mean, we've never seen nanoclouds in movies, if anyone has read the book "prey" they know what I"m talking about.

Ok, so maybe I'm borrowing this from a hundred different movies and stories I've heard/read, but it's inspired. :P

I want a space story, an exploration story, one where you travel to ap lace, figure out something, run into problems, have humor, and in the end, fix something, some bigger problem.
Fear of Failure more than once, I want an "all is lost" moment, like someone gets stranded for 20 minutes and the audience has no idea what happened to everyone else. then a return to the "possibility of winning" with or without knowledge of what happened to everyone else.

Maybe some more characters in there, some serious ones.

Perhaps we could have a few arguments throughout hte story, side-plots or something. Not too many though, no more than 1 or 2. The story CANNOT distract from the main story too much.

Also I just don't want any cliche'd beautiful good-looking people in the movie. No models or anything. Regular people.

Anyways...
This is so conceptual I might as wellsay "I want nother star wars movie mommy! like I was 4 and an old sci-fi story was pop culture for a long time :P"
So I'm not sure how serious all this can be taken :P

your thoughts?

You've discovered the secret to writing great literature: Rip everyone else off.

And then of course combine them in new and interesting ways.

In all honesty, if this were made into a movie, and the movie was as good as you've explained it to be, I would love it.

Reminds me a little of Firefly, actually. Poor Firefly. Such a great show. :(
So sayest the Writer of Silly Things!

After I wrote this I think I woke up and realized how stupid I was to share that with the world.

I got drunk thereafterwords.

No, kidding. I did actually think of this really cool idea for a 5-10 minute action sequence, but it isn't incredibly original.

Take a ship, and have it fly through like a maze of tunnels and crap, puzzles, whatever. And have a bunch of little flying aliens and ships trying to attack it.

And don't have a single camera cut...

Seriously, think about it. It would be amazing.

Kinda like a 24 deal, trying to fill in the gaps of time with other stuff that's going on, but the camera would rotate and move alot while going around the ship. Kinda panning.

Like with some wierd techno music going on, lots of energy...

Almost like watching someone else play a videogame for 5 minutes flying a ship. Except make it more interesting than just watching a ship.

Like have waves of enemies, big, small, 10, 40, 100, thousands, and have the ship pull off all sorts of crazy stunts and crap to avoid them.

Yeah, borrowed form every movie in the book, I know. But who cares?
...You could then have turrets with people controlling them on the inside, (also incredibly borrowed), but I wnat to see the turrets constantly rotating and firing while the ship hovers around, or goes really fast. Almost spidery looking, these big arse rotating turrets on this medium (corellian sized ish, or lost in space size) ship. Like turrets that are 20-30 feet long, firing like rapid-firing stuff.

And the camera could pan around the ship, then pan near the ship, watch the people inside it doing stuff through windows, then pan into the ship (like through a window), and see the action from an interior perspective for a few minutes, watch people shouting at each other, see what everyone's doing, watch someone get up from their panel to jump into a turret or to fix something that blew up.

It would be spectacular.

Assuming the movie were good, and the story were good, and money, time, and effort, were available, and it didn't look like some cheesy ripoff of every sci-fi movie ever.

I want it to be almost like half-life, where you experience it from ONE perspective, and you don't have like a cutscene or anything, you see things as they happen, while they happen, making it a little more dramatic.

Anyway...I thought htat'd be cool.

Are you joking?

I'm serious, I can't tell if you're serious or not. :(
