Seeing Kyle's hair in the screenshots got me thinking (this might be worht doing on the model). If JK is capable of using semi-transparent mats (equivilant of alpha-channel textures in Q3), why not pull a Squeenix on us (Square-Enix) by making a cris-cross selection of mats with translucent ends on them. basically, he'll look like he has real hair from the side, and like normal from the top. up to you though. BTW, a good idea for the eyes might be to do what Ravensoft did: make the eyes as a sepparate part of the model and have them animated into the model's idle animation (if thats possible in JK).

Well, that my imput for the hour. see you next time kiddles!

His head is still too big, Shred. Compare it to his upper body. The JK model's head/torso proportion is about 1/2 or even 2/5 (2 to 2.5 heads per torso), while your model's is 2/3 at best (1.5 heads per torso). You should either widen the shoulders and lengthen the torso, or shrink the head. Either way the proportions need some work.

The arms match the head in scale now though, but are too long compared to the upper body. Moreover, his legs, and especially thighs, are too thin and frail for a man's body; they're too straight and lack the natural curved shape of quadricep muscles which the JK model achieves with far fiewer polys.

The textures are another story. While making a skin resembling the JK cutscene actor would be nice, I'd be just as content with the current textures, which I find superb other than the overbright, wrinkled face with the shocked expression. :p

Hope you find my opinion useful.

Better, but his iris' look oval instead of circular, that might just be some rendering problems though too.

Awesome job either way.
2005-02-26, 12:05 AM #52
It looks good, but the eyes seem REALLLY far apart. And maybe a little too big as well.
2005-02-26, 1:07 AM #53
Definite improvement, the only problem left is the eyes. They're a little too far apart and maybe a bit too big, but most noticeably too wide open, giving Kyle something of a zombie expression :p His entire face says "frown" so I suggest closing his eyelids a little and giving them a slight slant to match that expression.

I'd really like to animate that when it's done.

That pic with the JK model shows what's off with yours. The neck seems rather large, the head is a bit long. The torso could be higher up. The proportion of the torso to the hip. They may seem minor, but they'd probably make the model look a lot nicer.

Better, Shred, but not as it should be...

If you look at the lowest picture that Hellraiser posted, you'll see how different the actors (What is his name? Anyone?) beard is from the one you made. The actors beard edge is much more sharper cutten on the edge.

Meh, thats a very small thing, but it bugs me off  ...

The actors eyes is more round I think...

The biggest problem with the eyes is that they're not focusing on one object - one seems to be going left, the other going right.

What NEEDS to be done with the face:

- fix the lazy eye that Wolfy pointed out

- eyes not close enought together.... very alien looking

- make the eyebrows match (the right brow looks so thin compared to the bushy left... thats why you shouldn't shave with a lightsaber, Kyle!)

- the fact that you can see all of the iris makes him look maniacal... a more sane looking Kyle would have more eyelid

- cheaks need to be more full.... think more 'Val Kilmer' than 'Raven Kyle'

- the last SMK shot that HR posted is a good example of what needs to be done with the side profile... namely his neatly groomed beard

- forehead might be too high... or maybe his hair doesn't hang over enough

And most of all, yes indeed, the model is much too much like the JO model... don't try to match him up to the original Kyle model OR the JO one.... if they were any good, you wouldn't be making a new one! The only thing you should be using the original Kyle for is texturing reference.... all other reference should be from the human actor. Don't forget, you're modeling after a human.... not another model.... a copy of a copy of a copy is never as good as the original. So much is lost in translation.

BTW, some elements of his clothing textures look like JO/JA than JK... perhaps you may wanna make it more like JK, so that when the cutscenes do come on, you won't be like, "Wow, how did he change his clothes so fast?"

Much better, Shred! The eyes are still slightly off, but I'm sure it is very, very hard to get them perfect. Might I suggest that you close the lids down by a few more millimeters. Also, his face shouldn't be prefectly symmetrical. That's what makes a human face harder to model than a stormie. Very few humans (even some of the most handsome) have perfectly symmetrical faces. The trick is to find the right balance where his face looks natural but at the same time pleasing to the eyes.

halucid has the right idea. Base him on the actor not on another model. I apologize if all of us sound nitpicky, especially since you clearly have way more skill than most of us in this department. We just see that you have amazing talent and want this to be the best looking Kyle ever! Keep it up man, this is gonna be awesome! :)

it's still in the eyes... and the forehead seems larger now...

make the actual brown part of the eye a little smaller and have the top part of the brown and a little of the bottom covered by the eyelid... that'd make it a little more natural looking and somewhat better.

the eyebrows.... something needs to be done with them too.

There's something odd going on with the eyes, brow and nose in that head on shot. It's like it's painted on flat. How about a perspective angle?

Here is your texture applied mort. Needs a little work I think. What resolution are you working in? You should scale it up to 1024x1024 to paint, then scale it back to 256 when you are done, its easier to make details. (only saying cause it looks like you painted in 256X256)

Because Shred18 doesn't like fingernails. Also, because of the first person hands (i'm guessing).

Correct me if i'm wrong, but weren't JK Kyle's pants and bracers black?

Yea, well he's apparently modeling his attire to the JO/JA Kyle... check it, it's not just the pants.... many of us said he should model it after JK Kyle, but he seems to think he can take creative control over this project for some reason. Oh, wait... he can!! All well....

I can't tell from the angle.... is that mismatched eyebrow fixed?

I speak for all of us when I say it's impressive, and the amount of work you're putting into JK is astounding.

I think the model and skin are both very nice, even if I wish it was based on the JK cutscene Kyle. The eyes, eyebrows and hairlips are a bit strange but nothing I wouldn't be able to get over.
