John Newell... OFF.

Its been a long time since i last posted anything here, so i felt that i shoul enlighten you all with my latest project. Still a WIP thats now being textured. here's a glimpse of the untextured/poorly lit version (don't worry. it gets better. MUCH better.)

*EDIT: New pictures below

So, any thoughts? Comments? Lamb and Tuna Fish? (perhaps you would prefer spaghetti and meatballs?)

Now, I'm not usually one to complain about something being too dark, but....

Ok. Small update:

*EDIT: New pictures below

Still playing around with the lighting, and half of the room still needs textures. Still, progress is progress.

Looks like someone is using one of those irritating laser pointers. Reminds me of an old Seinfeld episode. Other than that, I'm not really sure what's going on.

I agree with the guys above. I don't know what's going on at all. I do see the pictures, but you gotta admit they aren't very revealing.

But that's the alluring mystery! [listens to sounds of crickets]

Ok. fine. small update on the map. i'm still playing around with lighting options (even the latest version isn't where i want it yet). The "Laser pointers" were the original pointlights for a bunch of pyres i set up, but due to patchshadows, the light is almost completely blocked. I've increased the light levels and raised the lights themselves to make things easier on the eyes (i'll prbably scrap the pyres and find something a little more effective).

*EDIT: New pictures below

Any suguestions for the new lightsources (i'm out of ideas at the moment)

Yea, you need better light sources. I have no clue what's going on in that map.

I think those organic looking pillars clash with the floor, which is so ordered and smooth, with square tiles and everything.

Ok. last one before i texture the collumns. Btw, i plan on making the tiles breakable :D (still need to figure out how to make JA differentiate between a lightsaber strike and a footstep though)

The colored lighting is overdone, as well as the cloning. AGAIN.

I expected to hear that earlier. To each his own i guess.

Really. I had designed the collumns with a square design rather than my usual curved ideas. i might want to look into that. thanx.

I've looked through all the pictures, and honestly, I REALLY don't know what the idea is for this :/ sorry man but I really dunno what's going on.. I do understand that it's a WIP, but with the way you've taken the pictures it doesn't really look like anything

Actually, it already looks better in the last shot, less a clash. I guess it was just the darkness that kind of enhanced the contrast in the previous picture.

However, I have to agree with Gothix to a certain degree: the blue coloured lighting is pretty heavy.

Part of the blue lighting problem is the blue colour texture i use to paint serfaces when i'm building the early part of the map (my answer to the orange texture used by Valve for Source. Also, i just find that blue is so much more pleasing to the eye than the hot pink "caulk" texture).

4 update images of the first collumn texture test:

*EDIT: New pictures below

Remember, most of the lighting is temporary.

OK after playin through this WIP there's a few things id like to note, but these are all just my opinion. Agree... disagree it's up to you.

#1 I personally believe that there should be more space to roam around in, the map seems a little too cramped. (but thats just me some people might like fighting in close quarters like that but i prefer my rompin' room)

#2 Those exploding tiles rock! so much fun to play around with (all you need now is a way to make those lights blow up and we're set)

#3 In my eyes that blue really doesn't work right... you should just have the entire area dimly lit (like it's being reflected off the walls from that single hole in the cieling)

#4 If you don't like #3 try a different colour, like a brighter shade of blue, or just a brighter colour, or even blinking lights would do.

but as i said before this is just my opinion
please... NO MORE OATMEAL COOKIES THE PAIN!!!!

The rough transition from snow to brick looks unnatural.

Another day, another update.

Lighting's been finished off (for now), and i' sure that some of you will be pleased to see most of the coloured ligjhs gone (there are a grand total of 4 now. No more, no less.)

I've had to scrap the exploding tiles for now, as making every tile on the map into a destructable entity proved to make the engine unstable (and screw up saber throw). Anyway, on to the shots!!

My next problem is the snow and debris pile (and making the snow blend a little bit more with the brick)

More on this tomorrow!

I can normally see the things that people complain about being 'too dark,' and it looks fantastic. You probably should brighten it up a bit for the masses though.

Ok. Final update (a day late, but better late then never, eh?)

I've finished off this particular room (though i'll have to bump up the ambiant light). I've lightned the pictues for the benefit of the community. The next set of pictures will have their own thread and move out from this room.

The original shots are dark, and my monitors on super-bright right now. The latest shots look great, though. Love the atmosphere.
