JK MP Level

Just carving out the main area for new JK level. There will be waterfalls connecting the flow of water here.

Well, its hard to see what this level is becoming, but the waterfall looks nice ;)!

Good concept, but a bit on the boxy side. Might I suggest giving it a Greco-Roman sort of look. It could make for a great Aquaduct level. I would recommend consulting this map for ideas: http://www.massassi.net/levels/files/135.shtml

yeah that looks really cool but i also think it's a little to square looking you know?
2005-03-09, 9:38 PM #8
It's a little boxy, yeah. A lot of it looks like the boxyness fits, though.

Bricks = boxy.
2005-03-09, 9:39 PM #9
Yeah I know, but I intended it to be square and rigid as if it was all constructed by pouring concrete into frames. I actually based this level off of a photo in an old national geographic where a public park was built entirely out of concrete with water flowing through it.

I think I am one of the few people that can say blockyness is actually not bad sometimes. People have to realize that not everything in life is rounded or highly advanced architecture, which is okay.

I think it looks great, I especially like the use of textures that make it look really beat down and cruddy. Gives it that sloppy and dirty look.

[Edit] I sugguest making or finding a new water texture though, it doesn't fit well with it's surroundings. You should make a more clear, less blue water, with a bit of dirt thrown in to it.

I agree with Dark__Knight. Sometimes simple architecture can really work. Nothing wrong with "boxiness." It has an ancient early civilization feel to it esp with the mossy stone textures.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

yeah it looks fine to me... i don't know why but i really like the shot of the room with the perfect blue water. it just seems to add contrast and looks really pure, i don't know, i like it that way though..... is it going ot have some kind of music to fit the mood? heh....

Thanks for all the comments guys. One question though, does anyone know how to fix this error I am getting here? For some reason at this edge you can see through to the sky I have set in the sector above. That blue line is really distracting.

Select the edge, press 'm' (and do the same for any edges that might be under it / sharing the same space), then recleave the resulting surface to make it convex again. If you choose to put an edge in the same spot, you'll have to use edge cleaving to avoid one edge being used by two surfaces. If you just can't get it to work, send the .jed file to me ( kevinpatton@gmail.com ) and I'll fix it up for you with detailed instructions on how to solve the problem in the future.

Screenshots are starting to look very nice.

I see a lot of errors like that in almost every single JK level, made by anyone. But I beleive that's because my Radeon 9800 dislikes JK

Damn, I just realized that running the lighter plugin on this level may cause some serious headaches with the water getting cleaved up. Here's it lit without the plugin. It looks pretty good so it may not be worth the hassle of setting up cogs, geo, surface flags and face flags on that many surfaces.

Weren't you banned...

Anyway, FANTASTIC work, especially with the lighter. Try a different angle for the light, though maybe? Something at about 5 oclock to the player.

Er... huh? He didn't use lighter.

Anyway, lighter is great, but use it LAST. Do all your texturing, surface flagging, etc. that you are going to do, THEN run lighter. Then you won't have to do all that work.

That's a Half Life multiplayer level, right? OR at least it's very similar....or inspired by it. I can't recall what it was called...looks pretty good though, I like it.

not bad.... not bad at all.....

...and I have yet to see a blue waterfall. Evar. What's in there, 2000 flushes? And if you stretch the waterfall texture out vertically about 3x, it'll look a lot better.... try it. Plus, you'll need some mist on the bottom.

It's not any HLMP level I've played...

And it is looking nice. Also, the lighter plugin DOES cleave up stuff, but I think you're supposedly able to multiselect surfaces to include and have it exclude the others? (IE use the multiselect find dialog to select your waterfall textures, then invert the selection to exclude them) I'm not sure, I've never used it.

Nah, its an original level. I havent really played Half-Life multiplayer.

I will see if I can deselect the water surfaces with lighter later today when I am at home.

You can tell lighter to only cleave surfaces in a certain layer...
So, you could either move the water surfaces into a new layer or move the non-water surfaces into a new layer, and then run the plugin and select that layer.

Also, using the 'blocks light' flag on a surface tells it to treat the surface as if it is solid and light will not pass through it (probably doesn't apply to your problem but just so you know).

The cleaves the plugin makes should only mess up cogs, because any cogs you already have placed will only reference the old surface.

The blocks light flag might only work with the newest version of the plugin, the one that has a readme file with it.

I thought about the layers idea before and for some reason i thought it would cause the sectors to be not light at all. It actually seems to be working fairly seamlessly at the moment.

Also if anyone has a good waterfall texture they could donate it would be very apreciated. I would make my own but I really don't understand how to make custom textures fit within the 06baron colormap(or any of them for that matter).

What program are you using to make textures? Or why not just make a 16 bit mat? Those can have any CMP and still work. Just convert them with Mat16.

Well I wasnt planning on using 16 bit mats because this would be submitted in massassi level pack 5 if that ever gets off the ground. However I just read this:

Yeah man testing would actually be pretty helpful. Criticism on the weapon layout would be nice because I havent played* JK MP in years and am not sure how plentiful the weapons should be.

*I can't really play JK online because of this crappy netgear router.

I could email the GOB to you if i could find where this forum puts your email.

Okay heres the waterfall texture I made. It looks sort of crappy now but when it is transparent, scrolling and stretched out vertically it looks pretty good.

I also made sort of a vine texture which I might drape over the top edge of the level.

I used painter 9 for the waterfall and then i used photoshop elements to make it tile. For the vine one I just used a photoshop brush to draw out the basic shape then I used the cloner to take some detail from a close up photo of some vines.
