A Resident Evil mod for Jedi Knight
2005-03-11, 3:41 PM #1
I have a plan to start a Resident Evil mod for Jedi Knight (I talked to the guy who was going to start one, he said that he reformatted his computer and lost everything, now Jedi Knight doesn't work for him, and told me to go ahead if I wish).

It will consist of one large level (with save points (type writers) along the way) where the player must find out what happend to the people in the "building" (I have yet to think of what would be good to make a Resident Evil level of, and not a house). You will be able to choose either a male or female character, who will both have thier own advantages and disadvantages. They won't be together, and will have somewhat diffrent storylines. I will make every texture, the level, all the models and the sounds/music. I will attept to make something along the lines of Resident Evil: Zero and Resident Evil for the Game Cube (Graphic wise...). The cameras will be the same type of thing (ghost cameras that will swich with every sector that the player goes into, only showing a specific part of a room, until the player moves into another. I will also make the AI with different strengths and weaknesses. For example, Zombies will grab the character and hold him until shaken off.

The maps will be the same, along with keys and doors (Showing what needs a key, without showing the colour or what it is). I will make it according to the Resident Evil story line. The weapons will be chosen with the force scroller keys, and you'll raise the gun with secondary fire. The items will be chosen with the item scroller keys.

Any ideas that you would like to see in this mod (Like the name, or what kind of building  ) would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and if you hate Resident Evil, or the idea of it being made a mod for Jedi Knight and have to say something like "This mod will suck, don't bother doing it!" or something along those lines, please don't bother posting..(For example, jEDI_kIRBY)

Resident Evil Sucks.

I'll do models, though. But you already knew that...

I'd suggest you get a talented AI coder. Don't go for the grappling things, though. That'd take too much effort. And actually limmiting the gunning by making the player hold up the gun and stupid crap like that is what makes RE suck. Keep the system simple. Maybe send projectiles out of the end of the weapon that place a target on the enemy, showing where you're shooting. Or have sectional damage, and allow the player to 'lock on' and select which area to shoot at depending on how close they were. This would add funness, and detract from crappy RE-ness.

I really think this is a highly feasable mod, if kept simple and to the point. Grappling zombies is overrated and too difficult to code. At most, being able to be knocked down yourself, and maybe a way for enemies to crawn if knocked down, maybe even trip you, would be the most physical interaction I can think of bothering with.

Nothing against you or anything, but it isn't worth it. Jedi Knight is old and people don't play it anymore. If you make a Resident Evil mod for Jedi Knight, chances are about 30 people will play it. If you make a Resident Evil mod for a more recent game Ex. Half-Life 2, you might have thousands of people play it. All the time and effort for a few people that MIGHT play it just isn't worth it. People keep trying to get JK alive again, but it isn't going to happen. There might be some cool things that appear every once in a while, like the Rollerball Mod or Jedi Knight Arena, but even with those awesome mods, there were only like 10 people in #massgames ever playing them. Plus that only lasted a few weeks. Not to completley shoot you down, but you need to consider these things.
Think while it's still legal.

The reason I've chosen Jedi Knight to do this in is that I know how to edit the game, and that it's really easy to get things in it and working, as opposed to HL2. I also know a bunch of editors that know how to edit it, and can help and will hopefully will help me with it. It doesn't matter to me how many people play it, it's the fact that it would be someing I would enjoy doing, and the 30 people that may play thoguh it will enjoy it too.

Do you see why I didn't really want you to post? I want feedback on what I could add to the mod to make it MORE like Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil for Game Cube. Not what I could take out and make it less like Resident Evil. I want to take the time to do all these things, and it is possible.

After this I have thought of pulling a Resident Evil 4 type thing and making it have totally diffrent gameplay in a whole new environment, while adding onto the story.

You could do "regional damage" ( hideki used to have some code on his site) and have heads and legs get blown off :D

Anyway, it could be cool, without too much trouble. zombies are dumb, so JK's ai is perfect .

I have very little knowledge about Resident Evil games, but what you have mentioned sounds like it would be worth trying out. I can help with cogging.

Those who say that editing an old game is not worth it don't realize that having people play it is only one reason among many. :p And think of it another way; people still play variations of much older games, such as Chess.

Hey, I have an original idea, how about people NOT waste their time remaking a game for a different engine? If you're going to make a mod for JK, take ELEMENTS from a different game, ones that make it enjoyable, and INHANCE the current game.

This is true. To be frank, TCs are overrated.*

That's exactly what I'm doing. I don't know what your grudge is with this game, but I don't know if I want to now. Just because you dislike, or down right hate this game does not mean the rest of the world does...

I have it and love it too, I'll think about it for the next mod.

I agree that it would probably look nicer if made for HL2, but that doens't mean that it shouldn't be made for JK, and since you already know how to edit JK, you might as well.

If you wanted to take it further and implement bots or something so that you could use them in a level of never ending zombies, that would be cool.

As far as people wasting their time, it's there time to waste so why argue about that. If Diego wants to make a TC, let him make it. I believe he asked for ideas to ADD to the mod to develop it further, not if he should do it or not.

Way to jump on the whole theory behind the JKHub Kirb. :p

I think it'd be fun to blast through zombies in MP. ;)

Last summer I also planned to make a Resident Evil Mod - but I never got around to it. I didn't find too many people then that could help.. but I don't remember how many people I asked.. lol. Anyway I've also been thinking about trying to make a resident evil mod or doom 3 mod, lately at least - just some kind of mod for jk.

Anyway I could TRY to help with it... I mean I don't know how to mod yet.. I know some basic cog. (But not enough to do something with the knowledge.) Maybe I could help with the level/s... if not- then I'll just work on a rolling revolution level or something. I have a basic understand of level making... I haven't released one that would be worthy enough to massassi yet. Over the summer I figured out how to make doors and how to extrude objects - and I almost made a dome... Anyway just tell me if there's anything I could do to help... even if it's beta testing.. I could help with that. BTW if anyone can contact liquid (the creator of the jk rpg level - liquidville), then please tell him Owen wants to talk to him.

I've played a RE inspired game and, I must say, don't make it like regular RE. RE4 would be good, and the third person view in JK would be good. Just make a key to bring up the weapon to aim, put a crosshair on screen, and there you go. But please, don't make the game ask if I want to pick up the bullets (:P)
I had a blog. It sucked.

Why didn't you like it much? Do you mean that SVEN level? Or what? It's going to be like Resident Evil 0 and Resient Evil 1.
