Any ship designers here?

I haven't made a model in a long long time and I'm hitting a creative dry spot. I can't come up with a good idea on how to build a command bridge on this thing. It is supposed to be a battle cruiser / mid-size battleship type of craft. Right now I am just trying to work out the basic overall shape.

Anyone have any good ideas?

I like the start of it. Interesting shape. But I think it looks like a ship that transport smaller ships and stuff, not really for battle.

How much are we allowed to expand on it? Just a bridge, or more?

It looks like a whistle with gas tanks on the back of it.
Think while it's still legal.

I'm open to any expansion. Don't really know where to take this thing right now.

Maybe it should just be a small cruiser type ship.

My initial bridge design, for a light cuiser.

That cross shape detracts from the sleekness factor to me. The rest of the design is along the length, the sideways bridge wouldn't fit.

I say it looks like a blowdryer... without the handle:

No offense, though. It's still a nice original design. Just make the engines look more like engines and not blue cans stuck on the back. :p
DO NOT WANT.

hand-held vacuum cleaner of DOOM. muwahaha.

but yeah, i think if you put the bridge in the area that looks like a rectangle that's cut out in the front, that would look cool. kinda curved upwards but not too round. kinda like the hood of a car, just inbetween the two sections. and then have the glowing windows and stuff in that area, and bigger ones in the front, like headlights, just a bunch across the front of a car.

and you should mount the engines on that brace thing coming off the back. maybe on on each side of it.

Muahaha, reminds me of that vacuum-wielding iron maiden in Space Balls. :D

Seriously though, I love the ship. The design is sleek and really attractive. The engines cheapen it though IMO, but I assume those are just prototypes. Personally, I think it would have made for an excellent spaceship for the Hitchhiker's movie - you know, Zaphod's ship, what's it called?

Well, here is an attempt at the "on" switch to the space dust buster. I got rid of the ladder thingy, didn't seem to work too well.
2005-03-13, 3:40 PM #13
Maybe I should go for the vacuum look :) Of course now it looks more like a transport hauler.

The latest shot--Wow. I like it.

The new engines are superb, but I much preferred the front half of your original design. Ahh well, I guess ships are like women - you can't have everything. :(

That last shot looks great. however it reminds me too much of a Correllian Corvette.
Maybe you could call it the Space-Dust Buster.

The Heart of Gold. And it wasn't really his, he stole it. Unless they change that in the movie.

They'd better not.

Wasn't the HoG a shoe shaped ship, and not a vaccum shaped one? Or a ball shaped one, for that matter.

as far as i was aware, from readings, and listenings to the radio programme, the HoG was a ship shaped ship.

Engine tweaks.
Now I have to figure out how to repair the front now that I rotated the hull 180 degrees.

Those are some damn fine ships- I really like your design style. It's a nice blend of functionality and aesthetics, and nothing looks busy or overdone. I was going to suggest a spot on the first ship for the placement of the command structure, but it looks like you beat me to it. (Your second choice was exactly what I was thinking.) As for these things bearing vague resebleance to household appliances... who cares? The KSE Firespray our hero Boba Fett flies was inspired by a street lamp, and who can forget the hamburger and olive that led to the design concept for the Millenium Falcon? Everything comes from somewhere.

wow very cool ship u got there, kinda reminds me of the premithus from Stargate SG1

What do you use to make this sort of stuff? (BTW, it's awesome.)

Wow, very nice detail and texturing work on the engines.

If you want to make it look more like a vacuum/dust buster just put a hanger at the front of the ship...

Wow, that looks really nice! One thing though - dunno, but it kinda has some similarities to a corellian corvette

Yep, I do plan to make some kind of frieght door in the front. There are no textures applied yet. It's all geometry right now. This will defintely be a cargo hauler.

The old combat curiser design wasn't working too well for me, it looked a little too much like an ocean sailing ship.

Here's what it would have looked like:

 wow thats cool! I can do that sort of thing too! wut pgram ya using? Me use lightwave.

I'd suggest releasing them both, one as a battle cruiser, the other as a freighter.

It is all modeled in 3ds Max 4. Polycount is getting much higher than I am use to. Right now it has 34,000 faces and 17,000 vertices, and I still haven't made any cannons on it yet. My typical JO/JA models where only around 2000-3000 faces. UV mapping is going to be a nightmare!
2005-03-19, 4:53 PM #35
Swing those engines to the other side and the back can become a bridge! In any case, it's looking nice, spiffy and Star Warsy.
