Mid/High poly model for texture purposes for the TMU's APU

I've got yet to start the cockpit and ammu cases. Other than that, a few more details and it will be ready for some materials.

But that won't be the final model, only the rendered model for textures? Sad. I'd LOVE to see that in game. Isn't there a way to make that a high level LOD for higher end machines, and keep it local?

I've thought about putting it in game to see how it runs

I'd assume higher end machines could handle it. How many polygons does she have? If it's under 40,000, most PCs can run 500,000 on screen at once. Or was that most connections? Bah.

I bet thats at least 10,000+ triangles, nuh? Ingame that would really take up some processor speed I would think, but that still looks F***ing kicka** awesome.

it's not a question of if a pc can handle a model like this, it's if it can handle a dozen of them at a time, which will be the case with any level that uses it. mix that with the currently not made, but hopefully will be zion level's huge size and then the models of all the sentinels... yeah... it's gonna have to be much lower.
2005-03-21, 6:16 PM #7
But a LOD system can easily be incorporated (I hope, damn JA) and impimented to avoid this lag. Having the high end model only running on your machine wouldn't be a thing at all. Considering each sentinel was 10,000 Polgygons on it's own. You'd need 50 sentinels to even scratch a standard processor. a 40,000 APU + 10 20,000 APUs is 240,000 leaving 20 10,000 sentinels, and the rest can be static level archi.

I think it could work. Heck, even if you took all of the cylinders and made them 10 siders, and cut down the polys fast that way, you'd probably be able to do it.

yeah... but the thing is... a model really only needs to be 5,000 polys in a Q3 game. anything more is just making unneeded deatail that a texture could bring out that you wouldnt have noticed while running around trying to not get shot ingame. and yes, JA has an lod system. but 40,000 is just an insane waste of polys. i think it might also be slowed down due to the fact that JA's models are dynamically lit, and lighting all those little polys would take so much more than less surfaces that show the same basic amount of detail.
2005-03-21, 6:27 PM #9
Agreed. but if it looks better without textures, I'd say go for that. It's doable, and also it'd be kickass :-P

For ****s and giggles I put the model in game (not to scale yet.. about 2x the size)

Sorry about the horrible lighting.. I know it makes baby jesus cry.

OK, I'm almost certain that leaving it at this detail for external player view is a necessity. I really don't care how that runs, it's sex.

The real talent behind a good modeler, is their ability to creat detailed models, while still managing to keep a low-mid poly count. Almost any newbie can create a good looking high-poly model, but why have the model if you can't use it?

But this is a somewhat different case, you have a great detail of detail without going over the top, only making high-poly parts in places impossible to expressed using textures, and the rest is relativly low poly. Great Work! You still may want to turn down the poly count as best as you can though, I wanna see 'em in action!

No.

i care. and im sure everyone on the team cares because not everyone who plays JA and certainly not everyone who will play TMU has a top of the line PC, and will not be able to run it at this polycount. he's doing it for texturing purposes. we're not gonna make the mod for the percentage of people who can run a dozen 50,000 poly models along with a dozen more sentinels and then the huge zion level perfectly. we'll get complaints.

if anything, we can release the high poly model with the seperate player models pk3 we're realeasing at the same time as the final mod, it's just too much of a risk to throw probably the most fun part of the mod in there at an unplayable state for most PCs.

High poly for texturing. A real talent behind any human being is the ability to read a thread, or at least what the starter has said, before posting. (sorry if that was too harsh, as I'm sure your comments are appreciated, and I apologize if youre offended, but its like the first thing he said)
