This is supposed to be Venice, and, frankly, I don't think it looks Venetian enough. I'm trying to think of non-architectural details that would make it seem more realistic (like clotheslines, boats, pipes, etc.) Any ideas?

Hey, that looks really cool! Turns out clotheslines weren't a bad idea:

When I think of Venice, I think of old buildings on the water. I'm not sure I got the impression of Venice from the screenshots.

It could be some courtyard though.

BTW, is JKTB still going?

I don't understand exactly what you're trying to make. It seems like this is one big circular pit surrounded by buildings. I always saw Venice as more gridlike in its canal system.

Wow, I probably should have posted this at the top. I aimed the area I'm showcasing to be a non-traditional basin/courtyard area with a waterfall (which is going to be where the grey wall in the tunnel is). The architecture actually has a fair semblance to Venice (I based a majority of it on Palladio, and you probably can't discern it, but the dark-green floor is water). Also, take note that further down the tunnel, I've started to recreate the much commoner aspects of the city. I just took a bit of artistic liberty in making this section. I saw a few photographs of Venice, and something like this didn't seem too markedly unrealistic--and, in addition, there would always be the payoff of fun gameplay.

JKTB is only alive through me and dirtydog, but we're trying to awaken Hellcat. If that doesn't work, we'll just finish it ourselves. I think we're sufficiently motivated that we'll be able to do it.

So, yeah, anyway, thanks for posting.

Very pretty... nice archi and texture usage. Only thing that bugs me ar the circular areas. As far as I know, Venice is a series of straight or miandering water channels and narrow town streets. I don't ever remember it being prodiminantly circular.

Other than that... clotheslines are a must.... plus several arch bridges over the water... even if they don't really go anywhere ingame.

I don't understand why people think it looks out of place. Maybe it's the angle of the shots.
2005-04-08, 9:07 AM #10
I think it'll look fine, slong as you DO have channels and stuff somewhere. And I agree, random bridges and such would be a BIG improvement, along with clothelines. I have a venice sitting around on my HD somewhere untextured with winding back-alleys and such. This might convince me to find some textures for it.

I think this shot puts things into perspective. I'll put up the other parts of the city later.

Looks promising, I like the window textures. Are you planning on releasing this or is it never going to be released like JKTB??

I've been to Venice.. There are lots of Bridges that go over the canal's. It's kinda "dirty" and old looking. It also smells but you can't really get that outta a game lol

I reckon it looks good. Archi is looking good and once you add in a few 3do's it will look fine.

If you need help doing any 3do's drop me a PM or email..

I'm amazed more people haven't liked this - it looks incredibly interesting and original right now. How is it original? Well, I just love how you are combining the traditional look of Venice with your own unique designs and intricate details. Both the architecture and texturing are superb, especially considering it is a WIP.

When you add in canals and a waterfall, perhaps you could also have gondolas following pre-programmed routes around the water, and even have rain or maybe a fountain of some sort. You could also have fish swimming around, underwater tunnels, clotheslines, bridges, aquaducts, etc. It could not only be one of the best-looking levels, but also one of the most immersive and unique in terms of gameplay dynamics. I love the idea of sprawling waterways and catacombs, all connected to one giant, domed hub (correct?) - please, if I could test it, I would be honored. :)

Woah, nice mind reading. :) I was actually planning on integrating all of those things, with the possible exception of fish (I'm not exactly sure how I'd make realistic, low-lag animations for the fish. I s'pose I could always take the LEC route where the fish use limited animation).

As for you wanting to test it.. well, to be frank, I'd love your help. I can always use a knowledgeable beta tester. Do you have AIM/another instant messenger?

As a matter of fact, there have already been some great fish made (animated as well) by GunBoy.

Just go to the massassi 3DO section, 4th one down!

Here are a few more screenshots. While, admittedly, I'm not showcasing a lot aside from texturing and lighting, I thought it looked sufficiently good to act as a teaser until I could finish the other sections.

The wall textures look great, but that water seems out of place.

I would say to make sure to have rooms where you can shoot out of windows, otherwise it will be just alleys with good textures. But yes, some good texturing going on there

The way the arch is cut off in that first new shot looks terrible. It would look great if you modeled the arches.
2005-04-12, 6:18 PM #23
I'm definitely gonna change the water. It was just serving as a placeholder until I could darken it realistically.

Another definite thing I'm planning on doing is designing windows out/in which you can look. I might even have some that you can open.

JM, I don't really know what you're seeing in it, but the arched doorway is modelled. Maybe I misunderstand you.
[Ah, I'm guessing yer talking about the second shot. If that's the case, I agree with you. I should probably turn that into architecture.]

Anyway, I have enjoyed your compliments, thanks. :P
