The way you drew that makes it look like he already did it and you just highlighted the edges!

I love the atmosphere for it, somber and serene in the lobby. Gives an interesting feel, I'll be shooting someone and suddenly feel peaceful :p I like it.

It looks good, but those massive wood supports and beams definately take away from the Roman feeling.

Hmmm, I was worried about that, I spent ages selecting those textures, trying something new, reselecting them, etc. ... It was driving me crazy! >_<

Any texture suggestions for those wooden beams?

I really think there shouldn't be any wood in this map, it just doesn't fit. Try something a little more cementish. I suggest even rounding the supports and capping them with blocks, as not to screw up the rest of the archi. At best, cut the outside and inside corners of every square prism so that the corners meet. If that doesn't make sense, I'll whip something pretty up.

So for the first part "rounding the supports and capping them with blocks", you're pretty much saying make them pillars/columns, right? But about this "At best, cut the outside and inside corners of every square prism so that the corners meet" - what do you mean?

I'd love to see you whip something pretty up, so please go ahead! :p

I like the way this is going.

Other than the wood (which in and of itself is not bad, obviously -- as a matter of fact I really like it), spectacular work.

I have an idea.. keep the wood and say that's the attic :p

YIPPEE!!!

I released my first BETA version of "Basilica" - you can download it over at the hub, so go to http://jkhub.massassi.net/project/show.php?projid=25 for details and a link.

I can't test it myself since its needs a good 2-3 people for a good session. Pease post your findings back here. I'm a bit worried I didn't set up the JKA cogs correctly, but I'll let you be the judge. Any bugs, suggestions, etc. please email me, post them here, post them, on my project page, whatever - I'd love to hear them, I want to get this thing fixed up and released within a week! :D

About 1.7 MBs zipped (it says on my project page).

EDIT: I might be able to Beta-Test, but be warned that I have an internet connection from hell - satellite. It's slower thna dial-up when it comes to gaming, last time I played JK on-line I had about 1,000 ping!

I'd still be willing to try and have a game with you though, I'm available all night, just be warned that I might lag badly. :)

Righto, here's the rundown:
Echoman and I had a game together, but that didn't last long due to some horrific lag on my part. Because of this, I unfortunately can't test my own level over the net (maybe on LAN, but that doesn't matter right now).

So, it's up to anyone around here to determine a time and host and go for it on their own. If everyone could post back a bug report either here, via email, or over at the Hub, I would be greatly obliged.

As Echoman pointed out though, I haven't labeled the buttons, and seeing as that is rather crucial and I won't be in-game to show people what to press, I've posted a screenshot here for everyone's benefit. I'll add signs over the buttons in a later release, assuming I ever even get them working. *sigh*

Anyway, tell me what you're up to, I'll be around and popping back over the next few days. Thanks. :D

I don't like that, it really takes away from the atmosphere. Maybe you should make a starter spawn room that's like a lobby, and it takes you to this area when two people choose to duel?

or maybe you could make them like half-hidden bulging bricks that would be pretty noticeable. when you activate them they slide in and some cool latching clanking knocking sounds and then stuff happens.... kinda like some indiana jones looking secret buttons, i guess...... know what i mean?

I think I'd go with this.

Fitting sounds were used in JK levels 19 and 21...
19StoneDoor01.WAV
19counterweight01.wav
19cweightstart.wav
19cweightstop.wav

Hopefully they'll work for your level too :)

Lose the brick mat on the sides of the stairs, it looks horrible like that.
2005-05-31, 9:59 AM #110
Maybe you could use the stone sticking out idea, but have a small description "carved" in to the stone. For example, on the one where two players must do it to fight, maybe have the word "challenge" or "duel" carved in to the stone. But not too large, just small enough to notice that it's there.

My suggestion is to have exits to other rooms with a word over the door. So you want to go to the admin room? Step through these doors. You teleport there. Want to get a camera? Step into the camera room. I think the queue would have to be the stone block thing, though.

Either way, I think JUST a stone block would look boring. Put some sort of an alter or a statue. Athena for dueling, Zeus for admin room, Hermes for camera, etc.

This is a lobby for a JKA level. I think that's way over the top, and will conflict with the current JKA cogs, meaning some poor coder is going to have to rewrite that for me, since I don't know a thing about cog.

This level is meant ot be a blend of Roman cluture with a futuristic arena. Maybe I should make a back-story similar to Liandria Corp. from Unreal Tournament about how they recreated a Roman arena for futuristic contestants. Yes, I think that would be plausible. What do you think?

Again, I tihnk that idea's a bit OTT, see my above posts, but I may consider it.

I'm considering using the default JKA "label" textures, but even I agree they clash somewhat. Perhaps I'll make a new texture out of a Roman looking font.

This is nice, but is going to require an insane ammount of additonal time and effort. I am a perfectionist, but considering this was originally a speed level, it has gotten quite carried away. Don't get me wrong, statues would be nice, but there's no way I have the modeling skills to make a statue of Jupiter, and where would i put it? I would also have to totally reconfigure a lot of these JKA cogs to suit these many "different" rooms. Plus the filesize would shoot up, the level's already 1.8 MBs zipped, which is pretty darn big considering how small it is. I don't want to lose an audience for the sake of an insane amount of detail. If you really want ot see statues though, please, feel free to make some. I think zagibu offered at one point.

I have never played the level you mentioned, and I assure you I have not ripped anyone's work (the textures are by BerneyBoy, but they are free for use, as stated much earlier in this thread.) I'm just clearing up this problem now, incase it developes into a rehash of the naboo starfighter thread . . .

Anyway, thanks for all the comments people, please don't back down. I'm not trying ot be harsh, just getting a bit tired. If you really want ot see your ideas implemented or want to counter my points, please go ahead.
