The Rising Empire: Chapter 1
2005-06-06, 2:31 AM #1
I think it's been years since I posted a topic on Massassi - But who cares. Whatever the reasons I had then, I've long forgotten them, anyway.

Ok, so some of you might not know what this is - The Rising Empire, was originally a novel I was writing, back in high school, about humans on an Earth-like planet, that are occupied by an alien Dictatorship. Well, back then I really wanted to make this story into a movie, but I didn't have the resources, so I decided to make it into a game - all I really knew how to edit is the Jedi Knight Series (MotS, back then) so, I decided to take the story, and set it in the Star Wars Universe, about 10 years after Episode III - because, I'm a loony, artistic nerd, that doesn't like to do things the easy, profitable way...

Anyway, (shorten this up) as time went on, I went from MotS, to taking a break for music, to Jedi Outcast, to Jedi Academy, and here we are now.

What I'm doing right now is all scripting. So, nothing too visual to update on, just yet. I'll hopefully have level 2 (or 3 - depending on how I divide the levels up) finished this fall. Once I finish that, it'll be all set for release.

This whole opening is about 75% of the creation workload with all the visuals, and stuff - playtime is actually only about 1/2 or 1/3 of the whole Chapter. Level 2, will be much longer, have more action, but will take less time to make. Pretty f-ed up huh?

Opening is about 85% complete.
Level 2, is about 20% done.

The Plan for the series (Note: plans change):

Chapter 1: About 3 levels (map 1 is mostly, just a large interactive cutscene) Overall, Chapter 1 is about 60% done.
And'll be released when it's done (shooting for a Fall release)

Chapter 2 - I have a good start on, structurally, but scripting for it is gonna be a *****, with all the hopping from map A to map D to C, B and then Back to A... (via level hubbing) - A lot of exploring involved, and this *should* be the longest playing chapter in the series...

Chapter 3: About another 4-6 levels depending on which path is taken. (I'm considering 3 different chooseable paths - land, sea, air, type of thing. With at least 3 levels for each path, and additional paths within those paths.)

In the meantime here's some screenshots:

Yes, the bar is supposed to be that red.

A potential cutscene, showing off the two main characters...

It's taken me forever, but I can finally stop slacking off, now that I know everything I need to know about custom SP level creation, plus I now have some awesome programs at my disposal, compaired to 2-3 years ago...

A pre-rendered cutscene:

Well, that should bring you all just about up to date...
More shots later.

Freaking amazing.

I finally remember who made my favorite JA skin of all time. <3

Cool, except that the Coruscant one looks awfully much like the JA one... which wasn't very good :/

So in other words, the Coruscant one needs better textures.

No way... it's far better than JA's Coruscant, which was basically a Nar Shaddaa clone.

I think the one detail people who make coruscant fail to realize is that none of the buildings in the films had corners. They were all very smooth and round and elegant.

Tell me DAK, for that Female skin (That's the leela one, right?) I keep getting errors with it. It's becoming more frequent, but randomly when I die I get all this junk put on her. I keep hearing about some dress-up like feature, and I can only guess this is putting every thing on the skin. So I'm somebody with a couple robes, a skirt, big boots, sunglasses and 3 or 4 sets of hair.

Any idea how to fix this? (Or even better, how to utilize it?)

It's a scummy area, of Coruscant. Don't tell me that the architects on Coruscant actually bothered to make the slums look smooth and pretty...

Keep in mind that the whole sector, is basically as bad as Harlem or Queens was, in 70's - or a really bad side of LA or Chicago - or East Germany.

Every city, has it's schitty low-income buildings. Well, this is it. It's not supposed to be fancy - it's all gritty, and it's riddled with gangs, and drunks, and the occasional Stormtrooper, that doesn't care about his position there....
..It'll all come together, when it's released.

I would dirty up the buildings then, take chunks out of them, add rust and grit and smog to the air. It looks good as it is, but not what you say its supposed to be.

I would actually add more advertising...

I've always noticed a lot of advertising in relatively unpleasant places... Need advertising for military organizations, drugs, and other general intoxicants... Bars, Cantinas, and Restaraunts are big things in advertising.

Just a thought.

Looks good and stuff, nice job!

Yeah, but there still don't seem to be good scifi city textures around. As the ones JA has are weak...

The surface of Coruscant is nearly all upper-class. If you want a scummy area, you have to go quite a few levels down.

Anyway, it all looks really cool, except for the bar. Even though it's supposed to be red, it's still... bleh. Why don't you try making the textures themselves be mostly red, instead of blasting the room with red light?

Yeah, I actually knew that, a long time ago, when I started this in MotS, and moved over to JO - but, after complications, I had to re-design the level from scratch, and it just ended up a few stories higher...

Besides, there has to be an area, like this that they let go of, on Coruscant, 10 years after the Clone Wars. And it's not so much scummy, as it is sleasy, and just over-run, by scum. The Empire barely has contol of this city block, (at this time), but, could care-a-less, since there's nothing of real value, there anyway - until recent, Rebel activity, makes them change their mind.

Yet another coustomized character...
All I can tell you, now, is that this Russian stereo-type's name is Ramius, and he's a Clone War veteran - and he plays an important role in the story (that why I bothered making a model of him). Yes, he lost his arm in the Clone War.

Only problem I see with that model is that his clothing would cover his arm. Unless he's trying to make some type of statement.

If I had an arm that badass, I'd make sure to rip off all the arms on my clothes.

I'd suggest making both forearms bare, and having the short blue sleeves on both as well.

man, when you'll release this i'll probably have to go and buy a copy of JA. looks TOO good to be true. i mean, pre-rendered cutscenes? and i love the main character's skin and model, too. he just looks WAY too real for the SW universe, and i mean that in a very positive way.

And Heroine. The leela model is probably the best one for JA I've ever seen.

Man, during filming - George was really on the actors' case today:

George: Look, I don't care if you're the writer, AND the Main character - I'm the director, and I say, your mother is Darth Vader's sister, and she was mysteriously eaten by a Nerf, whlile shopping for a new pair of marguffins...
