Hey all. I am part of a team who are in the process of making a Cube Mod for either UT2004 or Source (will be known for sure shortly). For those not familiar, our mod is based on the First Movie (Cube) out of a series of 3 movies (Cube, Hypercube, and Cube Zero). We currently have finished all the player models, all the textures, The "Cube" Map and are now just working on adding in all the Traps (we have some already) and the custom weapon/items. We have a custom Boot "weapon" which can be thrown into a room and will set off a trap if there is one in there. Each character will have 2 boots, as well as a knife will be in a room somwehre in the cube. The gameplay will be to work together (or alone) to try and escape the cube alive. Here is a screenshot to get you all excited hopefully. Please post comments, ideas for the mod, etc etc.

I'm not familiar with these movies... is it like a maze of cube rooms? Is it like Spy vs Spy?

From what you've said and that screenshot, I can't wait to see more of this! :)

And, make it for Source :D I don't have UT2K4. >_>

The movies are independent films. They are considered like "Cult Classics" and have been gaining popularity across the globe in the recent years. The films were never theatrically released around the world so they are not well known. They are Horror films. The basic premise without ruining anything is 6 people wake up inside a Cube "building" where each room is a cube, and a majority of the rooms have traps in them.

No one remembers how they got in the cube, or why, but they are all there and have to try and survive and escape.
Like some rooms are trapped, and the "subjects" have to try and get around the "bugged" rooms and whatnot. If you enjoy horror style films (like its pretty graphic) I'd suggest you rent CUBE. Whatever you do. Don't watch Hypercube if you see it on SCIFI channel if you haven't seen the others.

Hypercube is the 2nd film and is considered the worst of the 3. But it's still good, just you should see Cube first if you want the "full experience" and dont want to be "turned off" from Cube.

Thanks for your comments on the screenshot, and just a note for everyone

All Textures are hand made. These are not copied from photos. They are all hand "drawn" and made, no photo textures or models or anything.

If anyone has any more comments or ideas for the mod, please let us know.

I was wondering when someone was going to do this. I really liked the first movie. It was something new and interesting. Also, if some of you are getting lost by the description of the concept, it's like this: People wake up in something similar to a giant rubics cube, and they have to find their way out. Some of the cubes are safe, some are trapped. To make things more challenging, the cubes switch positions on a set amount of time. I also recommend you watch it. It's very cool.

The level is looking great so far. The traps should be interesting :) .

::::::::::) (Evil Grin)

The traps will be very interesting indeed ;) and the rooms do move. Thank you all for your comments on the screenshot. Any suggestions on the gameplay or things you would like to see added?

I've only seen Hypercube, but I absolutely loved it and know I would love cube.

I tried making a hypercube level for JK, but I hit the thinglimit :(
Maybe I should try it again now that the thinglimit's broken...

Ya..Hypercube isn't like bad..just it is the undisputed worst of the trilogy. I saw the Cube Zero World Premiere in Los Angeles with the cast and crew and the director (same as director of Hypercube) was in his intro speech before the movie was like "Don't worry..It's not another Hypercube" ;) So I personally Like hypercube too, but yea if you like it, you'll love Cube and Cube Zero. If you dislike it, you should still give Cube a try.

When did Cube Zero come out and what's it about?
I haven't heard about it before, and I'm also wondering if I would find it in a video store.

Cube Zero came out October 10th this year. It is the 3rd movie in the Cube "Series". Cube Zero is a PREQUEL to Cube and Hypercube. It shows a lot more about the Cube and the people "outside" the Cube. Yes, its available on DVD now in All of Europe and the USA.

Cube is one of the best films I have ever seen.
The room looks pretty detailed. Can't remember if the patterns were anything like that.

The patterns are based on pictures from the film so they are very similar to the patterns in the film

gahh. I hate The Source Engine as well as UT. Anyone know if its possible to take something from 3ds max and export it as a .map or .bsp so I can use it in Hammer? if not than we will have to keep the mod on UT2004

its not possible to have it as a map model then flag it as a solid object?
2005-07-06, 12:49 PM #17
no. In 3dsmax you can export the model/map/whatever you made as a few kinds of files, but Hammer (the Source Editor) can only open .bsps and .maps and after countless hours of searching there is no way to take it out of Max and convert it to a .map file. We've tried saving as a .dxf or .obj from Max and importing that into MilkShape and exporting from Milkshape as a .map but the program crashes every time. We've tried other converters, but there is no real way to make something from MAX into .map . We also tried making them into a model and converting them as a .mdl to put into Hammer but that never works either.

gahhh. we are going to have to put it back into UT2004 and make the mod in that since we are able to bring the map into UT. We wanted Source since its such a better engine and larger playerbase etc etc but it's just not working unless we can find a way to take our Cube Room and somehow get it into Hammer.

If anyone has experience with 3ds max or hammer and has any idea what to do, please help.

Hammer can import HL1 maps as well (as long as they are in .MAP format) so you can try looking for a HL1 map exporter (more chance of finding one of those since it's been around longer).

Or you could just remake it. Textures are easy enough to convert if you read a tutorial or two on 'em, and then you just need to recreate the archi. It won't take as long as it took to make the original level since you just have to copy it piece by piece.

Only way this would be a problem is if there is more to the level(s) you've made so far besides the same cube room archi repeated.

Some updates: We decided to go with the UT2004 engine because we were able to import our Map into UnrealEd instantly and have been having no problems with it so far. While we all personally like Source much better and wanted that, there are just way to many issues since Hammer can't create maps as detailed as those made in 3ds max so we chose UT2004 since we can still make the large map in 3ds max.

We will still have all new player models/skins. Every major character from CUBE will have their own custom model and skin. We will also have new weapons in (including the boot), plus all the traps of course. We don't want to release too many new screenshots of the different rooms/colors etc but to just keep some things going here are two new screenshots.

The First screenshot is of the Opening splash when you first laucnch the game.

This second screenshot is of the Opening Main Menu in the game. Note: The pictures in the bottom left move through all of the main characters (like a slideshow if you will)

We are eager to hear any comments or suggestions. Like if you think something should be added to the mod, or the menus, anything at all. Thank you again for all your compliments on the screenshot of the cube.

Well, I recommend you get the core game programmed and up and running before you finish the fine details. :p That stuff is usually saved for the END of the mod making process.

We are at the end. All player models/skins are completed. The map is completed. The coding for the traps is set and up. Its all basically there. just polishing up everything here and there, and finalizing everything. We are almost done

Once we chose an engine it was easy to import our cube map, complete the rest of it, add in all the ladders/doors etc. So we are nearing our First release.

Do the boxes move around? I heard from my brother (who saw it) that the rooms actually move once the door closes.
Sam: "Sir we can't call it 'The Enterprise'"
Jack: "Why not!"
2005-07-07, 12:02 PM #29
Yeah, that's the main thing. They move around in a pattern that the "prisoners" have to find out, because in every move, a new cube is lifted up to the surface, the only escape possibility. It stays there for a short while, then returns to the pattern.
I bet you are quite curious now if someone manages to escape.

Yes. the Cubes do move ;) so it wont be like the same path every time and stuff. they move around.

Question: Would you guys like to see more colors in the rooms? Like a room with black walls, a room with pink walls, etc etc. Or stick straight to the film with like only Green, Red, Blue rooms etc. Which would you, as a player want to be with?
What if you found a portal to a parallel Universe?
2005-07-07, 4:45 PM #32
I'm almost certain that there were more colors in the movie than the viewers were able to see. There's no way that the people could've gone through all of the rooms. Although, having less colors would make things more challenging. So, I'm stuck between the choices. I'll get back to ya (but for now I'm leaning toward less colors).
Who made you God to say "I'll take your life from you"?
2005-07-07, 4:47 PM #33
well also with the colors the rooms will be rotating, so it wont be like "Ok..The blue room is safe etc. and the rooms/colors will be random. Like not all blue rooms are safe or anything, its all completely "random" where the traps are.

But I see what you're saying. heh. that's why we wanted to see what others want since we are stuck between decisions.

Very nice. I once made a "cube" thing in Blockland; it only had 27 cubes (all painted different colours though), and you could fly around through it. It was fun.

It looks like it was just randomly slapped in the lower left corner. It doesn't really fit the video game mood.

Exactly. Especially for people who've not seen the movies.

You're better off with a cleverly spliced (READ: NOT blended around the edges and NOT bordered) small screenshot of one of the traps, for example. Or leave it blank.

I'd prefer less colors. And why not replace the "real" pictures with screenshots of your models?

We decided to keep just a few colors for now. only the colors that were shown in the film. We will be releasing a beta within a few days. Any other suggestions before its too late?
