darkplaces(modified quake 1) runs maps that are made under Q3 mode in radiant.

Nice try, smartass, but Quake III was the old engine. As Cazor has just pointed out, it's one of serveral modified Quake I engines that loads Q3 BSPs.

Also, Cazor, the Quake III source code should be released sometime soon. So don't get your heart set on this engine. It was supposed to be released last year, but id liscensed it out one last time, and they didn't want to make it GPL after someone had just payed a quarter million dollars for it.

well, this engine looks just as good as Q3, and its got the whole dynamic lights thing going for it... (and bloom if i ever find a level it looks good in, haha) i think its handling thus really huge level much better, too. yeah i dunno yet.
2005-07-13, 1:43 PM #19
I was looking through this Darkplaces thing, and I hope you are aware it has no shader support (and won't have shader support).

2005-07-13, 1:46 PM #20
hrm... i didnt see that... the alpha layers on my support/grid shaders work, though.. you can see in this level.

JK doesn't have shader support, people seem to like it ok.

Just to let you know, I'm working on finishing the new UI for the TMU JA mod. Who knows if they'll need me for the new engine, but at least I can finish up the JA stuff. I'm getting married this weekend, so don't expect anything big until the end of the month or so.

Man, I hate to post again, but the TMU staff may want to have a look at the Q2E engine ( www.quake2evolved.com ). The next release has per-pixel lighting, and it currently already supports a full doom 3 shader system. Very impressive stuff. The only drawback is that it uses the Q2 BSP format, but current .map files can easily be put into Q2 BSP, and then the dev tools will calculate the lighting from the BSP and create per-pixel lighting. -- It also has MD3 support, and they're talking about MD5 support. Just a thought. This is by far the most impressive engine I've seen.

The crane thing looks especially impressive in the first shot. IMO per pixel lighting shadows are sharp enough to could cut diamonds

Q.F.T...really you ARE going to get shutdown, maybe not sued, but definitly shutdown. They aren't going to let a free matrix game compete with their official matrix games.

Shh! Keep your voice down dude!

Maybe when you finish the game you can send it out and get it put into stores lol

Then they cant shut you down because its not free :P
2005-07-15, 2:35 PM #29
Yes, then they can sue.

I'm actually surprised that this is being done on a Q1 Variant rather than a Q2 or Q3 Variant (Like Quake 2: Evolved). As i don't know what Darkplaces is capible of, i can't really comment.

Looks good from what i've seen, but i still wonder: What makes darkplaces so much better than Ravensoft's Q3 Variant?

EDIT: Ack! i really need to refresh my browser once in a while, or at least read the above posts :o .

Don't mess with lawyers, I tell you. They can do more than just forbid you to release TMU. You can either try to keep it as legal as possible (change copyrighted names and whatnot), while releasing it as freeware, OR try to make them wanna buy you and release it as commercial game. Other ways got no real chance.

it has a chance if everyone just shuts up, lets the game get made and then released, In no time other sites will have mirrors and the game will be spread faster then they can shut down all the sites.

Textures can only store information about the color of a pixel on a wall at a given position. The Jedi engine (DF), Sith engine (JK/MotS), and other games from those eras chose to use flags to define how surfaces act.

Shaders combine textures with behavior data on how a surface with that texture will act. It makes sense, since all surfaces that use a water texture will naturally be expected to act like water. All you need to do is use the shader (like you used to use textures) and the surface will have the properties of water immediately.

Shaders can also be used to give transparency to textures, make textures give off light, tint textures, make footsteps on them sound different (snow, ice, etc) not to mention make the surface slippery, sticky, etc.

2005-07-17, 11:01 AM #39
Shaders are like "dynamic textures" as far as I understand, but the exact definition is probably way more technical telling all about rendering and their whole vocabulary of rendering things and pipelines in alaska.

Stuff like shiny surfaces and HL2 water use shaders for their appearance, I think. Anything that has a more dynamic appearance than a bitmap stretched across a surface probably uses shaders

I could be wrong because I've been editing JK and out of the loop with the whole graphicz renderingz revolutionzz

In Q3 based games (and possibly Source based ones as well) even simple textures that do nothing special need a simple shader. Radiant will automatically generate shaders for textures that have none, which is nice. :)
