LEGO STar Wars modding: Boba Fett & Bespin Leia skins

For a bit of fun, I've started reskinning characters from the LEGO Star Wars game.

You can check progress & developments in this fbtb.net thread.

There's a more general (scripting, model swapping) LEGO SW modding thread here.

Unfortunately there are some limitations with what can be done, depending on the whim of the programmer who made the UVmaps for the skin wraps over the models. (The Leia above should have brown arms, but the skinmap uses the same colour block for the torso base and the arms, sadly, and that's the only model with suitable hair to convert Padme to Bespin Leia).

Still, plenty of scope to get reasonably close approximations of existing official minifigs, and of course endless possibilities to make custom minifigs working within the limitations of the skin meshes.

I will be writing a tutorial and including the texture extraction/insertion scripts in a Lego Star Wars Mod tools.zip in the next month or so.

I guess I should take that rating as a... compliment?

Whatever. It doesn't mean anything. I just found the graphic and was itching to use it. At any rate, modding for lego star wars looks awesome. If the game hadn't been so horribly easy I probably would still have it.

Unfortunately I can't colour the hip piece independently of the torso due to the skinmap pulling the textures from both pieces on this model from the same area of the skin. It should be dark brown.

I may try fudging it and adding a brown strip to the bottom of the torso front decal & see if that looks any good. And I don't think he ever came with a cape in the LEGO Sets (but he looks better in the game with one regardless). All in all, not too bad...

In reguard to not being able to texture them perfectly... Instead of hacking a poor solution, why not just change the actual model? All you need to do is assign different textures to the surfaces. (I assume it must be possible somehow).

Well, modding the game is so far unsupported by the devs. What you say is technically possible of course, but I'm limited by what tools I have- a .dds texture ripper & inserter. The models themselves are in .hgp format, something that's probably a proprietary format by the devs.

I've emailed the devs asking for assistance, but haven't heard back as yet. I did write prior to managing my first reskin however. Ideally they could supply the modding community with some generic models that have UVmaps that allow for each body part to be coloured / textured independendly. Bear in mind modding this game is against the EULA and they're widely believed to have an OT game in the works, meaning OT mods mightn't be looked on that kindly at present.

Dev assistance aside, my other angle of attack is by putting these showcase threads on various LEGO & Game Modding sites hoping to attract the attention of someone in the community who may be able to assist with UVmapping and/or modelling.

If you cracked the model format, I could supply a milkshape3d exporter. I have the game, but on the xbox. e-mail me. JM@omnisu.com

And I mean e-mail me now, not after you crack the format. :) I don't want to discuss this here, due to that EULA.
