...Night has fallen, and the population prepares for bed. But as soon as the weary denizens lay down their heads for a restful sleep, footsteps can be heard echoing through the dark alleyways as midnight trouble-makers emerge for a quick game of hide-and-go-seek...with rail detonaters.

This is a level I made over the course of about 6 hours, in honor of Delphian. I made this level for him in an attempt to get him to reinstall Jedi Knight. The level is not quite finished, but I will release a version on the hub when it is ready for testing.

For more info on the thread Delphian started, go here - http://forums.massassi.net/vb3/showthread.php?t=34648&page=1&pp=40&highlight=Delphi

As for the level itself, I'm open to suggestions for improvement. Please tell me which is your favorite screenshot, I'd just like to know for future reference. Also, the entire level is using default LEC mats with the exception of the floor, and this is a texture set which I feel fits the level nicely. It is also lit dynamically. >_>

Nice progress! I like the archi.

But I think the texturing is way too busy for my eyes.

DAMNIT, now I have to delete some of my asian gay pr0n to make way for JK. :(

That is extremely sexy, Daft. Nice use of lec mats (hey, what more could I expect? :p ), excellent archi, spiffy floor mat. Sweet, gloomy lighting, looks pretty much phlawless, man. Can't wait to play it.:D

..

...

o, thnx btw.

Thanks. I'm not quite sure what you mean about the textures being too "busy" though. Do you mean all of the little lights on them? Because it is night, so there needs to be something giving the level some small degree of brightness.

Please explain.

Sure. Is there anything you'd personally like me to add (other than asian gay pr0n) - some little effect or addition? Within limits obviously. :em321:

It's my best yet, but it's making me look bad? Paradox?

I kind of like the textures, what exactly is wrong with them? If anyone wants to make some for me based on a city atmosphere, I'd love that! ;) Otherwise, what's wrong with these?

And on a sidenote, this surely isn't my best yet. I think it's my best non-symmetrical map, but hardly my best yet. Isn't something like Somnolence better?

Oo, I know, you should add a somewhat tall statue in that courtyard in pic 6. That might liven it up a bit (i'm not saying that the lvl looks boring). Of course, its could look totally out of place, so you can decide. :)

Nope. Somnolence is sexy, but there's not much to it.... plus it has blue 2000 flushes water in it and I know yer never gunna redo those pads so they function like gears... :( Yes indeed, this is your most artistic map yet..... and as for those textures, I like LECs.... but they don't suit you.... they're so grainy and mundane, while you're refined and extraordinary.

 Whoah, that's exactly what I had been planning on doing, but I'd forgotten until you mentioned it! Thanks!

You're right, that would really add a lot to that space in the middle. Sadly, I can't model a statue for my life. Maybe an experienced modeler could. I quite liked jedi I's Egyptian statues. Anyone who'd like to make one, speak up!

Hehe, you haven't played that map in over a year halucid, you never know! ;)

Besides, don't think I disregard what you say. I at LEAST read and consider everything you put forth about my maps, and seeing as you're a God of mapping, I'd be foolish not to. I may not implement all of your suggestions into my maps, but I can assure you that I value your opinion above any other editor. Be proud. :)

Well, do you have any suggestions of texture sets I could use? I really like the current ones, but since both you and Echoman seemed to think the textures are iffy, I am most certainly open to new suggestions.

If someone will make/suggest a new texture set for me, I will try it out and post screenshots here.

I'll make one. I'm not sure what you have in mind so if you send me a PM and
tell me some appriximate dimensions and what type of statue you want then
I'll be glad to.

Absolutely beautiful work BTW! I like the textures just how they are even if they
seem a bit grainy.

The textures are great, except for that 3d-looking one on those thin arches. That just looks awful.
2005-08-11, 7:48 AM #15
I think it's too uniformly lit. But that might just be this crappy laptop screen I'm looking at. I might revise my statement later, when I get the chance to further examine the shots on a better screen.
It's your second non-symmetric map I've seen, and it's very promising. Seems like you can really do it :P.

I'm glad to hear that. :p

You are correct, it is only my second non-symmetrical map, but it is also quite small, so I hope people can still enjoy it. It is larger than EnRoute (my Mada Memorial map) and has a much more open-ended layout with many different possible paths between areas. I'll post a map sometime.

Excellent! I'll send you a PM soon with the details. Thankyou very much!

Wow, the lighting is actually quite amazing. I take everything back I posted about the lighting before...it was really just the laptop screen.

Wow, very nice work with the LEC mats. It kind of reminds me of Barons Hed RPG and Wolfy's LOAM level.

I have to agree on JM, other than that everything else is just beautiful.

Here are a few new shots. The first two show the small water area surrounding the island where the statue will be. The 3rd shot shows a rough map of the level (so not very big).

JM: Are the pillars better in these first two new pics?

The alignment wasn't the problem; that texture makes the wall look 'meaty'. It has parts meant to look like they stick out. The wall there is much too thin for such a meaty texture. They would look better with a plainer texture.
2005-08-12, 7:03 AM #25
Awesome work, Daft. Excellent use of LEC texture. (Indeed, except for those thin 'pillars', like the others said.) Excellent architecture, excellent layout! Lighting rocks.

Release please! ;)

2005-08-13, 8:43 PM #27
Nice, but I have to agree with JM. The shadows on the texture itself imply a depth that just isn't possible with thin pillars. Either the pillars need to be much thicker, or you should find another texture that doesn't have a whole lot of depth to it.

The only thing I didn't like was the texture on the beams in shots 7 and 8. Everything else is fine to me.
No sig.

I haven't forgotten about this Delphian - it will be finished up at some point. I'm still waiting for a statue.

Try using the lighter plugin and see what that does for you, but don't save it unless you're satisfied with the results!

I don't like the lighter plugin that much..... I feel it's over-rated. Many editors just use it to make a mediocre level a somewhat better level, imo. I might use it, but I honestly far prefer dynamic lights if I can help it. Certainly for a small level like this.
