Character Design

I am designing characters that I will soon model for my portfolio. I'm showcasing the characters themselves, and not so much the drawing [As I'm new to my WACOM, and not at all experienced in photoshop.]

This first guy I'm showcasing doesn't have a name yet. He's one of 3 brother priests in the land called upon to take out an evil necromancer, harvesting the souls of the world. He wields a pistol, and a mean attitude. He's the tallest of the 3 brothers, and the eldest.

The entire project is very surreal and dark. Think a little bit of nightmare before christmas, and add a little more disney, and a bit of Brother's Grimm. [Which I'd never heard of before I made this story.]

This is the second eldest priest brother. A doctor and a balding old man who specializes in explosives and other chemical reactions.

The youngest of the priest brothers was born prematurely, and thus has a massive growth defect, as well as a gimp leg. He uses a cross shaped walking stick that doubles as a hidden sword which he uses primarily for sneaking around and finding information. Using his size, he's able to get into smaller places, and sneak past guards unsuspectingly.

I likee the first one best - the others look too 'cartoony' to be as dark as I *think* you're going for.

You had so heard of the brothers Grimm. They were a pair of german professors who collected local folk tales in the 1700s. All the well known fairy tales - Cinderella, Rumplstiltskin, Snow White - were originally recorded by the brothers Grimm. This is where the word 'grim' comes from. All these stories were rather ghastly before Disney got ahold of them. For example, in the original Cinderella, the wicked step sisters cut off their own toes to fit into the shoe (Which was made of wood) but the prince rejects them when he notices blood. The movie is just a bunch of hogwash. They never wandered around the german forest batteling wolves and whomever the hell that guy with the axe in the previews is supposed to be. They were librarians, lawyers, and teachers.

It's, get this, supposed to be a movie... A story, you know?

"But stories should be realistic."

Surely you don't think the people on Gilligan's Island...?

"Oh those poor people."

You can't believe Vader's really alive?

"Well of course not... He's dead now."

As for the Brothers Grimm, yes, a large number of fairy tales we are familiar with today were originally introduced by them. The original stories however were far from pleasant. Essentially some of the earliest horror stories. Why these were chosen to be turned into nice Disney fairy tale movies, I can't imagine. I'm aware of a couple of movies which try to faithfully recreate the original stories, though not their names. And my most sincere apologies if I have derailed this thread in any way.

As for your characters, they seem overly exaggeratted if they are meant to be character designs. The quality, is low, so it's relatively hard to get an idea of what you are aiming for. The second is probably the best looking of the three, and would seem an interesting character. I'm not fond of the design of the last one, but, that's me.

I'm just pointing out that he should have clarified and said he hadn't heard of the movie, not the brothers in general. Also, the movie cannot be good. Just look at who is in it.

The drawings are very foul. Even if the drawing isn't really the important part, you should still not have crap drawings in a portfolio, because you won't be taken seriously.

It seems to me that you're going for a slightly-exaggerated look, which the first two fit in with just fine. They actually seem like they'd be good characters together. The tall, really skinny one, and the short stout one. The third one, on the other hand, doesn't really seem to fit in. He's in a different style than the rest, and your description of him doesn't fit in very well either.

Other than that, very cool looking concept sketches. (Well, for the first two.)

There is a book coming out called 'The Grimest Grimm' and it's supposed to be as close to the originals with some of the stories we never hear about

How does 3BP sound?

Admittedly, I rushed through this drawing, but it gives a basic visual of their full bodies. The first is more or less generally based on Jack from Nightmare Before Christmas. The second is adapted from the entire Mayor look, with some Jakel and Hyde thrown in for good measures. The last is a mix between that odd little creature that sits on the back of the big guy with the ball and chain in the one SNK game, and the leprachan character.

If it were me, I'd make the tall one even taller, shadowier, pointier, and skinnier (unrealistically so). Then I'd make the fat one, squarer, scraggilier, and stouter. Then I would make the third one wierder. Almost not-human. Really deformed and wierd. Maybe not human. Maybe the mother gave birth to a half-demon or something.

The fat one is by far the best one right now. By far.

Well, in all honesty, I imagined the tall dude to, yes, be a lot taller and pointier and mysterious. The second was supposed to be far more haggered and almost skinny-fat [The sort of baggy skin fat that isn't actually fat] and the last is supposed to be creepy, but lovable. So yeah, I don't know, I am really not confident enough in my modeling or drawing abilities to match the sort of image in my head.

If they're brothers, and they're drawn in this fashion, they should have some kind of common feature. Give them all a certain type of beard or something.

A common beard is a bit too much similarity, methinks. I mean look at them. One is tall, the other is short and fat, and the other is deformed. It would be enough for them to all have the same medallion, or at the very most, the same kind of hat. (Though I think that's too much).

One small common trait (probably apparel, not physical) is a good idea, though.

As appearances are concerned, I'm afraid the third brother's weapon draws a bit too heavily from Trigun, for my tastes. A hidden weapon in a cross? It very well could be unintentional though, as lots of weapons have been concealed in crosses. But for the sake of argument, remember Nicholas D. Wolfwood?

Eh, too ZOOIkes-esque.

He really could be a poisoner though. Nothing creepier than a little guy with, like, claws and other prickly things, who only needs to knick you to make you cough up your lungs.

But ya know, Msgr. Martinez on King of the Hill was a pretty bad priest too.
