Sneaking into Digital Painting

I've been trying my hand at some digital painting, reading tutorials here and there.

Here's my first try:

The digital coloring looks good (except his fingernails- euuch), but that is the sleaziest-looking guy I've ever seen. It may be his smile.

Thats exactly the point, he's a thief, he's supposed to look dishonest ;p

Looks good, but I think the eyes are too wide, they almost reach the outside of his head.

The anatomy in the face seems off at several places, but besides that it's good, certainly for a first try. I love his clothing and arm/hand.

Well, the face was drawn from a cartoon style, not to look like real life, so some of the anatomy is exagerated. BUT, yes, I dislike the eyes also. But, this was drawn in about 3 minutes to test painting on.

It's actually this dude [http://www.deitschel.com/blog/images/peter-gallagher.jpg]
Who made you God to say "I'll take your life from you"?

His eyes look really flat. Also his mouth looks kind of messed up. I like the arm though.
2005-09-03, 10:09 PM #11
He actually really does look like a thief. Or a dude from "The Crow". Or a little bit of both. Did you use PSP or Photoshop?

It seams a bit blurry, almost as if you used dodge and burn.

rofl

you people are hilarious.

Each bash the drawing, but not one even gives constructive critism on making it better.

"looks kinda funny like you use dodge and burn"

Give an idea how i could make it better.

"a lot of facial proportions are off blabla"

How about saying which then?

And, as i said earlier, of course proportions are off! Its a fricking cartoon! I'm not trying to make this look like rl!

Then again, I shouldn't expect better, its always been like that here.

Remind me please where I was bashing your drawing?

Wait here's some:

The chin looks too long.
The shading between his lips and chin make it look like there's huge lumps where there shouldn't be. At least on a human. Add more darker shading beneath his bottomlip.
The angle-relationship between the eyes are inhuman.
The nose appears decentralized.

Happy now?
On a side-note: You only mentioned it was supposed to look cartoony AFTER I posted my first comment, so how was I supposed to know where you were going with this? And thrawn[numbers] did actually say specifically what he thought needed improving. And yes this is still massassi so you can't expect more than 20% of the posts being either serious or relevant. The trick is to ignore.

I like that one a lot better, just make sure that when you color it you don't soften the lines too much. The first picture seemed overly fluid and smooth, while the design sketch was more to my likeing. This guy just seems like he should be rugged and rough. Just my 2 cents, do it if you want, your choice.

I like the bottom one but, HIS ELBOW IS POINTY!
2005-09-04, 8:51 PM #23
Haha ya i realized that while i was inking

Either way, I'm testing out some techniques to get closer to bioware's NWN style :

I have a long ways to go to getting their style nicely. Note that this wasn't what I was trying with the thief, he was just a first try into getting some good colors done.

That bottom one is perfect. Also, I don't know what you are talking about, us not offering constructive criticism. I specifically said that the 'U' shape of his upper lip is too pointy and wide, and if it were dulled down and shortened, it would look better, IMO. And what Thrawn42689 said is pretty specific.
DO NOT WANT.

Yea, I guess to me constructive critism is giving suggestions on how to fix it :P Anyone can dress a list of anything wrong. ;p anyways.

My advice would be to not use dodge and purn anymore, but hard-edged brushes, and a soft brush from colour blending. Allows you to get a nice texture flow.

I don't use burn and pern, its most likely cuz i gotta boost the contrast

but still I'm focusing on this drawing now and I'm going to fine tune colors once i know what i want for a surroundings.

Note the above is missing a secondary light source

Okay, the whol body is cartoony looking, and then with the head, the style changes. I don't like that very much, if the body is going to be "hard" lines, stick with the outline of the head being "hard" lines.
2005-09-05, 12:39 PM #29
LOL. Thats because its obviously not finished. Only the head and hair have been colored. The others are just flats. Figured since so many had a problem with the previous face, they could start giving opinions on this one now, see if I could fix any of it.

The eyes look misshapen. Does he have genetic abnormalities?

More specifically, they look ovoid, not round. I guess it could be from the attempt at forshortening, but it comes off as flatness, not perspective.
2005-09-05, 1:42 PM #31
LOL. That's obviously because it's not finished. :D

The second > the first, which shows progression, which is ver-nice. gut.
2005-09-05, 1:47 PM #32
Actually since his head is bend forward a bit it's perfectly normal for his eyes to look like this. Of course this means that he's rather thick eyelids, but that's not uncommon.

I really like the shading.
I was thinking the bit around the mouth could use more shading since they usually protrude a bit forward. I acknowledge that there's going to be a lightsource directly below it which will make it more viable, but perhaps a bit of darkening above the upper and below the lower lip will make it look less flat.

(I assume his ears aren't finished yet?)

Seconded. The upper part of the face is excellent, while the lower part looks a bit flat.

I've never seen a person with eyes like that, bent forward or otherwise. :p Also the lips don't seem to be forshortened at all, and his left eyebrow seems to be swelling up and pushing his right eyebrow off his face.

I'm not saying it's bad, I think we already know it looks pretty good, so I'm just pointing out the only things I do see that don't look right.
2005-09-05, 3:12 PM #35
Actually thrawn you do have a point. The face isn't bent foward enough for the eyes to ahve that exact shape.

And yea, I've been trying to figure out what to do with the mouth and chin because I'm not happy with it either.

I'd put a dip in the middle of the lips--right now they look like head-on lips. That said, the hair looks fantastic.

tried making the eyes a little less flat and adding some facial hair to make the jaw level less flat. I'll work on this lips, thnx for the idea thrawn, they annoyed me and i couldn't put my finger on the why of it.

Add some more texture to the facial hair...otherwise you are very good at this.
