KAMINO JK1 MP level released
2005-09-19, 11:16 PM #1
Hi.
Finally i've finished my version of Kamino - landing platform. Pity levels@massassi.net kicked my submition, so i post it here :-)

Description:

Kamino Landing Platform is known from StarWars Episode II.
Famous fight between Jango Fett and Obi Wan Kenobi in heavy rain. This is my first try to bring atmosphere of this place to Jedi Knight game. Level is designed to saber combat only. Sorry gunslovers :-) Maybe next time.
This is rather beta version, I had no time to test this level well.
So if you spot bug tell me, so i'll try to kill it.
I wish you happy slashing.

Always loved your work. Although not a big fan of the choppy framerates. Pure sex.

It's breathtakingly awesome! Fantastic job, my only remarks:

- The waves seem to disappear when I move
- Some parts of the architecture disappear. Maybe because it's 3do? Or Maybe I need one of the JK limit removers? (I do not have any, so....)

Awesome work Ortheza. Maybe have it play soundtrack from the cd?

I love the rain, the lightning, the sounds, the design. I love how you achieved the raindrops effect on the floor, the light and sound synced thunder, it's great!

(Include a guns version?)

HEHE, we'll be having many a clanmatch here!

That part where the light surge is, when I'm standing on the edge looking down at the waves. And sometimes the sides of the platform....

By the way, those awesome reflections by the window seem to be flickering too.

Reflections on glass filckering is "normal" it is one of flaws of jk1 engine
btw did you notice cloud "reflections" on platform ? :)

No, but maybe because I use brightness 0. Let me check it again. I love the raindrops effect on the platforms though! :)

[edit] Yes! I see the clouds reflecting when I run over the platform! Awesome!!![/edit]

Man, Ortheza! No matter how much I improve my editing skills, you're always three steps in front of me. Only things (most have been mentioned all ready):

1. Flicker problem. On the waves, reflection, platforms, and dynamic lights. I know the flicker/lights cog can be tweaked to fix this. Not to mention, the main platform looks like it's missing a surface in the front. (try stand on one of those smaller side platforms to see it)

2. No water impact?! I dunno why, but that really bothered me. I felt so disapointed when I fell off the edge, and there was no SPLOOSH!

3. I think it's missing things... Unless this is a different, smaller landing area than EP2's Kamino, then it's not very accurate. Either way, adding elements like "false doors" and other props would add to the atmosphere a great deal, and make this Kamino look like it was built for a purpose other than JK saber dueling.

In all tho... where as this isn't my favorite level in terms of flow and gameplay, it's quite probably the most beautiful JK map ever created. I give it a 9.

(My framerate was fine, btw.... steady around 75 in most spots.)

My framerate was decent too. It's always a steady 50 fps, and the lowest I got on this map was like 44. Neat!

Here's the disappearing surface.... and the thing I'm standing on disappears too (from a certain point of view).

... terrible things you are saying. :(
I used cogs to avoid flickering things. On my machine only weaves flicker in some directions of view. Other thigs working well. Except brightness flickering, but this effect can't be avoided :-/

"water impact...". there is water impact but pit flag kill you faster. I'll change this :]

"missing a surface in the front."
This surfaces are not triangles. i think it's zbuffer problem or so.
Surface you are seeing is transfluent and very close to other surface.

About platform. Indeed it's another place of Kamino. Platform in film is smaller and banks are higher. There are more differences :-) I forgot to write this in description.

The rain is fantastic. It's exactly how I envisioned it with my latest rain cog. I was just never able to create the "drop packs". And yeah, the cloud reflections are very nice, too.
But the flickering issues really need fixing. Everything is just too pretty to be interfered by this annoying bug.

Very nice. I did notice some unflagged floors, though

Hey I was trying to setup your level on the dedicated server, but the max players seems to always set itself to 2. I dont suppose you could add a few more walkplayers, the level is great.

I'm really happy people are still releasing JK stuff. Very, very happy about the high quality work you have done :D

Another bug that I found:

When you cross the bridge outside and you look down, parts of the bridge are disappearing.

A suggestion I have: Could you make the space around the platform 'bigger'? Otherwise, people who get Force pushed will be flying into an invisible wall. For SBX games it's cool to have a lot of airspace around the platform for pushing. (Like in tower)

I wish I still had JK, 'cause that looks better than SEX.

I've always loved your work, BTW. Good job!

So, apart from the glitches, it works perfectly when I walk around the level on my own. But! A weird bug.. :( As soon as someone joins, the game starts to freeze on me whenever I start moving. The freezes last like 5 seconds a piece, and only occur when I move. My buddy who joined the game had the same problem, freezes when he moved, but his lasted only half a second or so. The first game I tried, I had massive lag too (which never happens because I'm on highspeed broadband) - 6700 msecs... =\ The second game I tried, no lag at all, but still those freezes. What could it be? Massive amounts of netcode?

I do not experience anything like this in other levels. So, I'm assuming it's a bug in this level. :(

On top of that, I think there's a walkplayer problem, because the game is full with 2 people. (Unless, ofcourse, this is intentional.)

The rain is nice, although the raindrops are upside down and don't actually move at an angle despite their orientation.

... About freezing... i didn't noticed this, but as i said i had no time to test it well :(
All special effects are set as local cog (rain, thunders, reflections) so i don't know why. Could someone help me with this?

And yes there is only 2 walkplayers :/ i ralized this after posting level.

Emon
what do you mean "upsidedown" ?

They or some raindrops are gradential from up to down, they should fade the other way.

The fact that you're amused at my clumsiness gives me a feeling of accomplishment. I'm glad to have been today's entertainment.

I figured it couldn't have been that old of a thread given the low number of posts for a level that was fairly highly anticipated :)

To determine if the thread is old or not, look to see if it's on the first page or not. Also, looking at the date of the last post helps a lot, believe it or not.

I'll give you a hint to not revive old topics. Don't bother looking back past the 1 week mark. If you really want to find an old topic, then you have to go out of your way and should then KNOW not to post. The end. It's worked for me, I've only done 1 necro in my time and that was from posting in a link by accident instead of the recent post.

Wow, nice work.

I remember the high quality levels you used to make back in the day. In particular the Dagobah and Freezing Chamber maps you were making for the SWTTC. I've probably still got them someplace.

I never understood what should be wrong with old posts...are you guys ashamed of your past or something?

Dude, someone like Simblimke has *earned* a right to revive old threads. Especially a thread about an awesome level.
2005-10-12, 9:18 AM #37
I would disagree Tiberiumsoshort. But that is another topic for another time.

I've only ever revived threads when they were linked to from the chat and I thought they were new, and didn't see the date.
