Wow, that's beautiful. You really captured the feel of the battle. The only problem with it though is the Coruscant backdrop, it's so low res and 2-dimensional that it detracts from the rest of the scene.

Is there any hack for XWA where you disable the max amount of ships you can have in skirmish? I've always wanted ha-UGE wars :)

It's a planet, other than the spherical curve there isn't going to be that much depth :p

First of all, it doesn't look like a sphere, it looks like a disc. The reason is that the surface texture doesn't have any features that indicate it's curve, such as a light duffusion gradient. Second, the fact that the texture is so sharp makes it look flat. A planet at this distance would look hazy and glowing because of refraction of light in the atmosphere. Third, it's got no sense of depth. The atmosphere should be visible on the edges since it's got a slightly larger radius the the ground.

A simple rendering of a planet should do the trick though. There are plenty of tutorials out there.

[edit]
another thing is that Coruscant itself should glow with it's city lights. As I recall the opening shot of ep. 3 shows the day/night border zone with the region already covered in darkness all lit up.

You demand quite a bit from a '99 game like XWA.

- If I do it with a backdrop, You will have a super-dull 256x256 image of Coruscant.
- Making coruscant a sphere will result in the planet beng a lot smaller, taking away the the effect of fighting in low orbit. And you still won't have any light refraction.

As for the glowing effect, you'll notice I've included that. Tun down the lighting and the rings and lines will glow.

Long story short: The disk stays the way it is.

Hey, I was only offering my opinion. Do you mean that you can't have skyboxes with resolutions higher than 256x256? I remember some very nice skyboxes in XWA. In any case the year the game was released is irrelevant... JK is a '97 game yet a method was devised for creating detailed backgrounds. But of course I never edited XWA so that might not be possible.

Only thing I have to say is that the teal glow on the ship is hideous. Make it a deep, rich blue or something. Or if you really really want teal, make it a darker hue.

@Fardreamer, yes that's what I'm saying. The max resolution for skyboxes as well as textures, is 256x256. Anything bigger will be cut off, I've tried it before. There are some backdrops that consist of 3 or more images, howeber, they are limited to a horizontal arramgement, so thee'd be no up or down part. This means that actual 'boxes' will only stretch horizontally but have a floor or ceiling. This is suitable for rings, comets, asteroid belts, etc. but not for planets.

I'd suggest modeling the surface of coruscant. Even some detail would REALLY improve that scene. At worst, make the clouds a seperate transparent layer or even 3D atmosphere. I'm absolutelly certain there's way more that can be done with that planet to make it at least on par with the models.

The clouds are a separate transparent layer.

Modelling the surface ... Well, I've started on one some days ago, but I don't think it'll be suitable for a mission set place in the orbit - even in the movie you don't see much contures apart from some rings and lines. But ok, if the surface bugs you so much, I'll see what I can do.

Reminds me to continue on the cargoship =)
