Inspired by a Research Paper

So recently I wrote a research paper for my humanities class. My topic was the advancement of architecture, which inspired me to create the following...

Please excuse the image quality. It is the result of shrinking, then enlarging the image because of my bad judgement. This is hardly finished (as I still need to add the 3DO architecture and textures). But let me know what you think of it so far.

It's probably going to be difficult to find decent textures for this (roman?) cathedral...

That looks just like something my friend made except he ripped textures from the last episode of Cowboy Bebop.

Hot stuff.

needs to be REALLY tall. REALLY REALLY tall. Especially since its a Gothic Cathedral :P

(just learned about these in class)

what are you using for reference

As far as the level goes realistically, I'm using the architectural style more than life size. To get an idea of the size compared to the player, you can see a walkplayer kyle in the second screenshot to the right. The ceiling is fairly tall, but probably not quite as tall as an actual cathedral. And yes, I'm going for more of a gothic style. As for reference, I've just been looking at various interior shots of gothic cathedrals (mostly ones out of France).

Hmmm, I always thought gothic cathedrals didn't have rounded ends for the openings. But what do I know?

It doesn't look particularly authentic, but it's good anyway.

Actually, the arches between the columns are pointed (just not too sharply). But I know that the ceiling is rounded, it just seemed to look better to me that way.

Scuse me but if you mean the Epsiode with the cathedral that would be epsiode 5 Balled of Fallen Angels...

Anyway looks good Hope the big glass circle is breakable >_< keep it up can't wait to play it.

I'm thinking of adding chandeleers (sp?). Do you think that they would fit in well with a cathedral, or parhaps candles on candlesticks would be better?
Who made you God to say "I'll take your life from you"?

Also chuck in some pews and make them dark stone pews, also add in a cog that lets a player kneel! :p

needs a cicle of light coming out of the stain glass window! expanding as it goes as the only light on because its day! sure add in lights for night time, even some candles in the wall of the stairs down to the basement!
Anarchistic, Srunched. you got a problem i got some metal storms lets settle this out side.

the correct spelling is "cheerleaders", and its a good idea.

Love the gothic design, you should make it a sp angel idea.

Actually the ceilings werent rounded, they had vaults which supported it.

how do you plan on doing the vaults in archi o.o. it hurts my mind to think about it too hard with jed's approach at angled cleaving >_>

It's possible, but you'd have to be really experienced with geometry and JED, and I'm only so-so with both. So, I was going to try some 3DO architecture for it, although it might not look quite the same.

Ok, I've had a little bit of time to work on this some more (last week was a very busy week). Here's some updates, mostly to test textures to see if they work well. The ceiling texture is definitly a placeholder since the ceiling will more than likely be redone.

So what do you think about the stone block texture? Is it good, or should it be replaced?

The bricks are too large to work together with the archways...

Still nice textures though :D

Uhm, I don't wish to break any mood, but I've used vaults like seen in those pictures in my levels and with sector architecture they are REDICULOUSLY easy to make. I made them in a brush engine as (source) well but that took a great deal longer. (Alternatively, with Quake3's patch meshes it's rediculously easy again)

Yeah, it's a lot easier than you'd think. I did a whole archi demo with vaults and it was rather easy. You just have to REALLY think in 3D, as you can easily get confused about what you're doing. Lots of layers helps some, if you're getting confused. I'd try WITHOUT layers first, though, as it'd harm it if you can keep all your ducks in a row..

Can anyone give me a JK level that uses vaults? It might help me to see what it looks like in JED before I actually try it for myself.
Who made you God to say "I'll take your life from you"?
2005-11-14, 3:57 PM #24
Sure, I'll upload my JED project for it.
[PS: It might be for mots, I don't know. Didn't even bother to open it up. I will write a tutorial if it's honestly hard for you to figure out.]

I just realized that that isn't TECHNICALLY a vault, but it's BASICALLY a vault in the cleaves required. It requires cleavin an arch from one side, and then reselecting that section of sectors, looking at it from a different angle, cleaving another arch, and deleting the overlapping sectors [that's the hard part] then merging what can be merged to avoid framerate blotches.

I've never done it for a game, but with booleans, it's totally easy to do. Make an arch that's just as thick as the size you want your vault to be. Make a perfect cube. Overlap the arch and the cube so that the arche's highest point is half of the cube. Subtract the arch from the cube. Rotate the arch 90 degrees and repeate. You now have a vault.

A Pirate's Tale level 5 has vaults if you still need a level. It's in the mots sp levels section.
