My shot at a 1024x1024 texture

Well.. since Street3 has been a WIP for like.. 2 years now and some things like 3do limit and visual adjoin limit have been taken care of in that time as well as a few other things. So it's kinda opened up a few doors that I can use to add detail to the next street level.

One idea I had was is making some of the buildings 3do's with high detail arhictecture. Another one is using the same method I did before (with sectors), but with higher quality textures. So I tried that first.

Since I couldn't find a good quality 1024x1024 texture. I made my own in 3d studio max, with a free brick and concrete texture I found online.

Here is the 256x256 version

Here it is in game, the right half of the building is a 512x512 texture. The left half is 1024x1024.. and you can for sure see a difference. Even though It looks better in game.. I think cause I resized the image it kinda blurred it a bit.

and for fun I opened up Sith2 to see if there was even a difference in that.

I think it looks great.. but I think it is alot of work to do. The 512 texture wasn't too bad but when I'm using paint shop pro, resizing the images and cutting the image up took some time that I dunno if I want to put into every building. So I'm going to try my first method of making high detail 3do buildings. I'll post pics of that when I get to it.

So I'm not really showcasing anything just, showing you guys.

[edit] for more info on the 1024x1024 texture, see Emon's thread.

He may have done that on purpose so that we could see the break between textures easier.

If you had the patience, the 1024 texture looks MUCH better, but it's a cost/benefit thing. Is it worth the effort to you? I would rather have the 1024 though, that's my vote.

it may look nicer higher res, but it still looks like a cartoon.

right, it needs depth. more texture to it. probably not possible in jk... who knows? someone probably will have a comment. ;)

well the white stone could be "dirtied" up a bit. maybe make the sense of depth by putting angled shadows actually on the texture instead of all one lighting?

What nonsense. The fact that it's JK doesn't mean textures can't be high quality. This texture just isn't very good, no offense Zanardi.

A little constructivism here but the bricks dont line up.
I think 1024 textures would do better as skies/sky boxes tho
This is retarded, and I mean drooling at the mouth

i don't see where they don't lineup... if you mean the one that was taken from the sith2.... to me it looks like the one on the left is the higher resolution and on the left is a comparisson. shots possibly not even taken at the same time.

Yeah, Ok we already know this.. they're are 2 different size textures going on there and I don't really care that they don't line up.

Anyway, I've been working on modifing this texture. Hopefully you'll like it.

Z@N: For the Sith 2 shot, were you putting the texture into a mat3?

If not, you should give it a try. Use 32-bit textures too.

Good thinking Jon.. forgot all about the 32-bit texture capibilities.

Here's where I'm tring to go with the texture.

I'll probably do some sort of border around the bottom windows. Also wanted to get some vines growing up the side of it and dirty up the bricks/concrete so it doesnt look so tiled. Tell me what you think so far.

yeah! much more like what i was talking about! but yeah... be sure and dirty it up and maybe give all of the white more of an off-white color even before dirtying it? looking much better though

Getting there! The shading in the bricks shows the repetition, however. And you need more contrast and grain on the white brick.

oooh yes, definitely grain.... i know this isn't the same game but.... i downloaded some skin pack for Counter-Strike. it not only gave new skins for weapons and characters, it also layed some type of transparent grain texture ontop of everything in the maps to make it seem more detailed. it had specifications like if it was a box it would make a transparent directional wood grain on top of it and if it was a brick wall it would put some type of random.... blobbed... grain on top of it. kind of hard to explain it, but it really did a lot for the maps. most of the time it made it look better.

Deus Ex used effects like that to great effect. I think it's called "detail textures".
VTEC just kicked in, yo!

Detail textures rox

As for that, great stuff. I only wish JK would support properly 1024x1024 textures though.
