Lost Baggage (LoG)
2005-12-21, 2:55 AM #1
I spent all night working on a fully functional baggage claim conveyor system under the Terran International Spaceport. This is part of the first full area the player encounters in the Life of Grismath Anthology (for MotS).

Luggage travels up this whimsically weaving network of conveyor belts from the unloading and inspecting area below.

The machine supervisor ensures the smooth operation of the baggage system from this office (the interior of which I'll add later) and handles any illegal item incidents and lost item claims.

By the time passengers get to one of these baggage claim rotaries, their luggage will (hopefully) be circulating around to meet them for an easy pick-up so passengers can be on their way home, on holiday, or on business.

This is ridiculously over-detailed in operation and construction, but Grismath will find himself down here in the bowels of the spaceport on more than one occasion. As for when I'll release this series that's been in the works for quite a long time, my response is, be patient, progress is speeding up again finally, and you can look forward to hearing from me again in the near future. Trust me, this is on a scale and depth unlike any other SP campaign I've seen in the community.

You should have the baggage objects align to the normal of the conveyor belt surface they rest on. That would look really cool. Zeq has some overly complex COG that can get the surface a thing is touching. :)

Looks cool though!

Not bad, Gris, but you could do a better job with those textures... (particularily the angled portions of the conveyor belts)
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

What do you mean? I probably won't change it, as I've added far too much detail to this area to begin with. What ends up happening is, I'll spend hours on a part of the level that the player only sees for a few minutes, and then feel obligated to make that a more important part of the game since I invested so much time in it, which will in turn take up more time. Planet Sith III's comments were a real kick in the pants, because regardless of how fun it may/may not be to play (and it follows a gameplay model a bit cruder but alomng similar lines I guess as LoG used to be), honestly it looks like crap, but everybody was posting in his Hub forum, 'lookin' good!' 'impressive work!', whereas when I try to concentrate on graphics a little in addition to gameplay, I always get, 'I know you could do way better than this, Grismath'.

I guess I rushed a little towards the end, because I find texture alignment oh so mind-numbing. But please, where are you referring to?

Yeah, sorry.. Guess I was a bit vague... What I'm referring to is the angled portions of the conveyor belts and how they don't line up with straight parts. With a few cleaves, and some manual texture rotations, you can resolve this issue, and it will look 100% better, imo.

Regardless it does look excellent, I'm sorry if I sounded flippant earlier.

I would highly recommend you do what Sarn suggests.

As for the conveyors, are there going to be traps? I see great gameplay potential in this area, looks like it's already mucho fun. This sounds kind of crazy, but could you perhaps have some kind of key or valuable item locked in a trunk, and Grismath has to run all over the place to get it before it's lost forever in a luggage chute?
