I'm not sure if this is good for a beginner but I'm very proud of it.

The hollowed out part of the charging rail should slant downward, not upward, other than that, looks pretty good for a beginner.

shape looks about right but there are alot of unnecessary polies there.. what software are you using.

I''m using Cinema 4D. And yeah I'm trying to get rid of the extra pollies.

Is the charging rail the little thing behind the sight?

EDIT: New pictures, yay!

How do you like them?

Trigger guard is too round, carrying handle and charging handle is wrong in shape. Google some reference images.

Call me crazy but he didn't say what type of gun he was making... how can you even say its shaped wrong... Unless there is only one kind of gun that looks like that. *shrugs* I know nothing about guns.

Still, i think its a nice start, but normally, I'd suggest at least completing the model before starting to post shots.

That's Cinema 4d? How do you get your renders to have the wireframe overlaid?

-It's a cool effect.
2006-01-30, 1:14 PM #10
This is a better reference.

Jepman: I can recognise a M16 reciever if I see one ;)

bearded_jarl: I used photoshop. I took a screen capture with and without the wireframe then turned the wireframe version to multiply in PS.

Simbachu: Thanks.

I totally thought the back end of the gun was the barrel.

Which would be sweet.

(Lookin' good.)

look pretty good until it gets to the hand guard

and the "better reference" he posted, that is an AR15
AR15 = M4 not M16
2006-01-30, 8:25 PM #17
Okays. I thought it looked a bit different.
2006-01-31, 7:12 AM #18
Yea, that looks more like an AR-15, tho the main difference is the foregrip and the trigger grouping.... and AR-15 != M4 != M16 btw....

Does your modeling program have a way in which to put a background image into the editor, such as in the side view, so you can model directly with the picture? Saves alot of time and problems, and makes them look nicer. ;) And a good side view never hurts, then for depth, get a more 3d shot..... but its lookin good, tho it's kinda painful to hold.... :em321:

The AR-15 is a civilian semi-auto M16 variant with tubular handguards. Everything else is the same. That reference works just as well as any M16 picture as long as the handguards are replaced.

I do use a sideview image. I posted it earlier but I never posted the model on top of the image.

good comparison to show differences in the two
m16, m4, xm8

M4= M16 Carbine
AR15 = M16 Civilian
AR15 !=M4

The AR-15 was originally used as a special ops version of the M16 A-1. In 1997 the us armed forces started using the M41A Carbine instead, since it was based on the M16A-2 and not the A-1.

There are two versions of the M4. There is the M4 Carbine and the M41A carbine. The 1A has a select fire mode with single shot and full auto, where-as the M4 is full auto only. There is also another version of the M4 that is occasionally used when manuverability is key, and that is the M4 commando, also known as the Colt Commando. Same thing as the M4, only with an even shorter barrel.

The AR-15 and the M4 differ because the original AR 15 had a solid stock, similar to the M16. The M4 has an adjustable length stock. The M4 also is equipped from the factory with an RIS system for many many accesories and upgrades. There is a slight difference in the foregrip of the gun.
