Duct Tape Sculpture
2006-02-17, 11:05 AM #1
Sorry, no pics yet. I can't afford to buy a digital camera because I'm saving for a brand new computer.

Anyhoo, I've decided to pick up duct tape sculpture again. It's fun. I've made lots of little knickknacks in the past, completely out of duct tape. Then I stopped for awhile, up until a day ago. Here's what happened:

I watched Star Wars IV, V and VI on Sunday afternoon. Then I got thinking about Jedi Outcast, and Jedi Academy. That got me thinking about building a lightsaber.

So I did. Out of duct tape. I'm so proud of it... It's life-size (I think) with an end cap, finger grips, 'start' button and tapered nozzle. Soon as I get ahold of my friend's camera, I'll post some pics of it on this thread. In the meantime, I'll finish the detail work and start on a new lightsaber hilt...

Anyone ever made anything out of duct tape? Other than repairs?

I made a wallet once.

Maybe you should make a digital camera out of duct tape and use it to take some pictures.

We made a ductape midget once.

OH, wait. WE was everyone else. ME was the midget inside of 3 rolls of ductape, screaming at the 6th grade sleepover.

Oh, but ME was also the MIDGET who put the timed sprinkler system in the house set for 5:30 AM. We still laugh about that one.

Alright, I've got the camera now. Tomorrow, pics are going up. And before I forget, I got bored again and made a saberstaff hilt as well. ^_^

And halucid... if you think the thread sucks, don't post in it.

Whoot! Check it out:

First, the lightsaber. Notice the emitter and cap at either end, and the button. The grip took too much effort to craft, considering it didn't turn out as a distinguishable set of rings along the handle.

Now, here's me holding it in front of a mirror:

Now... the saberstaff:

Bad lighting, but my hand is right against the handle, to give you a sense of its size.

Here's another pic of the saberstaff, this time at the mirror. Please disregard the odd expression on my face:

Sorry about the focus, but it's not a very good camera.

More saberstaff above. Note the two buttons, one for either emitter. They're in the middle so it can be activated with one hand. You can also see the grips; I did them differently than those of the regular lightsaber, depicted here from above:

I'm sure your girlfriend will like them.
Seriously, though, the saber hilt looks remotely good, but the staff is...well, kind of uninspired.

Excellent! Bring in the crits, people. I'm running a wallet business, and the profits are enough to let me buy duct tape every four sales. The saberstaff took nearly an entire roll, so please let me know how I can improve upon it. I plan on making more, in different styles.

Perhaps I'll use the styles from JA as bases.

Are you going to make any other weapons from star wars? Like a bryar pistol or an E-11? Or maybe even an imperial repeater? :p

Maybe you could really get into this and start painting your sculptures! I'd want to see that!

Hmmm.... that's an excellent idea, Ryham. I'm gonna start on an E-11. Thx!

Hehe, when you mouse-over this thread, it reads:

Sorry, no pics yet. I can't afford to buy a digital camera because I'm saving for a bra...

So I wasn't expecting a lightsaber...

No way, man. It reads:

"Sorry, no pics yet. I can't afford to buy a digital camera because I'm saving for a brand n..."

But brand new what?

Roll of duct tape?
Pair of runnin' shoes?
TIE Fighter?
... bra?

I would personally be saving for a TIE Fighter. You know the girls can't resist.

Anyway, nice work with the tape. Given the general simplicity of the object's design, the details are quite well done. Looking forward to seeing that E-11. Maybe I'll even send you a cookie if you can find some way to give it a collapsable duct tape stock.

Your camera obviously doesn't have a close-up mode... :p

But I'm definnitely liking that saber. Yeah, you should paint your sculptures, that would make 'em more lively and beautiful instead of all monochrome-y.

BTW, just a suggestion, but that saber grip (just the grip, not the entire hilt) could be done in black electric tape for nice contrast. Right now it kinda looks like crumpled aluminum foil, but....but....ah, what am I saying? It's better than I could do. ;)
2006-02-28, 11:17 AM #25
Basically just a BUMP post, but I finished the E-11. I'll try to get my hands on a better camera, and put up a few pics tomorrow maybe. :)

Btw, thx Delphian. I'll need to go buy some electrical tape.

Okay. Got the pics for the E-11. Behold:

And another, for a good view of the barrel and sights:

It's about as long as my forearm. I popped in my old Special Edition VHS tapes and watched stormtrooper scenes, to get an idea for the proportions.

And finally, here's some little fellas that give me inspiration:

It was fun.

Where do you live? I'd pay you $20 for a sculpture of that E-11. :)
