Mining Outpost

Here's a little update on my Underwater Station project. It's still making progress (slow but somewhat steady progress that is. Except that it's REALLY slow... and not quite steady). Anyway, some new shots:

It's a small mining outpost (not part of the base you probably have seen before). Still early WIP on that part. That ugly LEC Transport is a stand-in for a nicer Submarine 3do (which I don't have... so give me one.)

Comments?

3dsmax submarine? It can't be that hard to find/make one, can it? :confused:

Steer clear of gungan subs, they will ruin everything.

Doesn't seem to have the same attention to detail that the original shots had. Specifically, those columns in the window in the first shot.
Wikissassi sucks.

Great work Elmo. It's a MotS SP level, right?

Too bad you chose to make it non-Star Wars. Still great though.

Actually, I think it's wonderful that it is non-star wars. In terms of replay value and originality, it should be wonderful. The only problem is that non-Star Wars means a lot more work, in terms of models/textures/weapons/etc.. I, personally, would lack the willpower to a complete a project of this magnitude, thus why I mostly stick to MP levels. :o

I really want to see this finished though. It looks immensely moody, with some wonderfully cool environments. But I agree with Isuwen, it seems to lack detail compared with the other progress shots you've shown us. Keep going, this could be great Elmo!

Ruthven's awesome character 3dos now crowd the station, making me even more confident that this piece will some day be released.

There now is a plot for this SP level, which probably is the reason for the mentioned loss of detail. The first hallway was just a random piece that came to my mind without any ideas of whether this would become a SP or MP map. However, now that there is a plot I feel the urge to actually make progress on the playability of this map and not to spend too much effort on details that will eventually cause this level to be dropped.

I would however really like some ideas of what additions you think this docking bay could use. (It's supposed to be a recently abandoned one, so there won't be much life going on.)

I tried to make my own sub, but failed again...

Your stuff is awesome, and i'm honoured to see you using my player model, you put them to good use.

I have no comments for docking bay addtions, cos I suck at archi :(

If you want any other help in 3do's n stuff lemme know.
Code:
if(getThingFlags(source) & 0x8){
  do her}
elseif(getThingFlags(source) & 0x4){
  do other babe}
else{
  do a dude}

Wow, that last shot looks awesome. The new player models and computer terminals lend so much to the realism and atmosphere. It almost looks like a game made in the last 5 years. Very impressive for JK.

As for the docking bay, here are some suggestions:

1) Add animated light panels along the sides of the sub pens, illuminating the walkways, and add handrails above them. This would add realism. If you want it to be abandoned, you could have the lights flickering, or broken, and some handrails could be warped or bent or even have sections missing.

2) Suspend warehouse style lights from the ceiling above. As with #1, these could be broken or flickering.

3) Stairs or elevators leading down to the submarines.

4) Drains and grates could rest along the walkway.

5) Add some elevation drops and rises to make the "pier" more interesting.

6) Cranes and pipes could be sprawled across the floor and ceiling, with battered cargo containers beneath or next to them.

This docking bay has just become a safer place. I added some railings to the upper level (which is new). Thanks a lot to Daft_Vader, I'll see how many of your ideas I can implement. Some of the lights are already flickering (it's of course hard to see that on screenshots), but even more important: the player is able to destroy most of the lamps. Not the big ones across the docking bay ceiling, but the smaller ones (as seen on the third shot).

It's been a long time but it's starting to shape up Elmo, awesome work! My only question is do we get to see any aquatic life and if so, do we get to fight any sea creatures?

Fix those columns in the first shot and you shall achieve perfection.
Wikissassi sucks.

yah i was thinking the occasional good looking fish would add so much atmosphere.
duke has the right idea
maybe a big creature lurking in the distant shadows and little cute fish that come up close to the window every couple of minutes or something

Fish. There you have it. The common deep-sea trout.

I'm not sure if I will be able to fix these columns in the first shot. I already experienced HOM at one point (nothing serious, though), so I'm hesitant about adding any more archi detail to this area.

As for objects... the docking bay area is already up at 200 Things (all the rails and now the fish). I'll probably focus on finishing this station first and then come back to detailing the docking bay any further. Important objects such as stairs or ramps leading to the subs will of course be added, it's just about how many additional crates or barrels will be scattered over this place.

It doesn't require any more adjoins. Just one simple surface cleave and a bit of stiching.

Perfection achieved. Now, about those girders on the ceiling in the second shot...

No, all they need is proper lighting, no problems there. The control room shot with the new models, though. Are you certain that's not photoshopped?
Wikissassi sucks.
