NOTE: Might have to open URL in WMP.

A friend of mine is making a fan film, and wants some feedback on some footage, since this is his first time ever attempting a film project. IMO the scenes that look like a fly-by from a point-of-view from the ground are fantastic, however the closeups could use some work. The takeoff is ok, and the landng sequence is really good.

Can you guys give him any helpful feedback to help him improve.

Make it somewhat old fashioned in the beginning.

When you take off in a jetpack, you want to have a larger stride.

That's all I can think of.

Now, is it supposed to be cheesy?
I had a blog. It sucked.

Hahaha I thought that too.
DO NOT WANT.

I'll show you an original clip from the movie, just gotta upload it.

well given the design of the costume i say the intended goal is cheesy
eat right, exercise, die anyway

Yeah, I thought it was spose to be cheesey too.

There shoul be more movement in the flying shots than there is right now. Maybe invest in a strong fan.
Or, you could get some footage of smoke billowing past the camera then comp it on top of the flying footage with Premiere or something.

-It could look quite expert.

That's the original footage from the movie.

Notice that even though the film was made in 1947, some of the special effects IMO are quite remarkable.

The scene where he his flying towards the camera to attack the tuck, I think is one of the most realistic non-CGI flying scenes in film history. Also look at the scenes where your POV is on the ground and you watch him fly over the hills to destroy the missle. I think those scenes are great.

That is what my friend is going for.

Hahaha, that was classic man. It looked exactly as corny as the old movies, but in some shots it looked too good. He needs to cheesy up the take off and landing to look more old school. That last shot of the rocketeer guy messing with his sweet labled knobes, i think the perspective of the clouds is off.

Sweet video.

If that film lands in any populated area, you'll be guilty of mass murder!

I kid, I kid. That looks good. I too would argue that some of the footage looks a little more modern, but I'd say leave it as it is. The film has a good feel with elements of the past and the present bundled together. Just enough on both ends. The flying sequence as a whole works very nicely. It has a good flow with very little choppiness. It's simple and gets the point across- something that an alarming number of modern films in this crash-boom-bang world of forced excitement seem to have absolutely no understanding of.

By the way- when the time comes, how much of the finished product will you be able to show us?

Edit: At the risk of derailing the thread. (If it happens, I accept full responsibility.)

Just an interesting thing I thought to add while we're on this note. Here's a good (but not great) watch: http://www.starwars1937.com/

I'll upload the entire movie when it's finished (I have some a DVD of the rough draft of the film, and it's not all that bad).

Yeah, he does capture the original chessiness, but I really think the shots from the original movie look VERY realistc. Not spectacular, but realistic, as it look if someone was really flying. Just out of curiosity how do YOU think they did the original flying scenes in the film (I know just thinking if you know)?

I'd imagine a guy acting like a dumb *** infront of a greenscreen, like most special effects. :)

I'm no special effects expert, but I have made a couple sweet videos, like where my legs get cut off and I crawl out of frame. Now THAT took a while. lol.

Actually, in the 1947 film, there was a dummy on a zipline. When there was a takeoff scene, the dummy would be flying down the zipline backwards and they would reverse the film. They would have it regular for him flying down.

My friend couldn't afford a dummy or zipline of that magnitude, so it's actually a small G.I. Joe on a zipline. Pretty cool if you ask me. Yeah the movie should be out soon, hopefully this summer it will be complete.

That was so awesome, quality fan film right there! Now, a few questions and remarks:

1) What sort of budget are you guys on? What camera(s) and editing software are you using? I'm curious, because I have made (and am interested in making more) movies, admittedly not anywhere near that standard of quality.

2) How long have you been working on this, and how many people are on the project?

3) I love the music, did you make it or did you find it somewhere?

4) Hehe, is rocketman married! :D

Can't wait to see some more shots, this actually looks like a fanfilm that is going to be a joy to watch, as opposed to stupid crap like most of it is.

Why did KnightRider have to go get himself banned. I wanted to talk about this movie and have my questions answered.... :(

If and when KnightRider returns, I would very much like it if he could talk some more about this movie and answer my questions. I really think it is quite awesome!
