You gotta ditch the whole trying to add scratches to your textures. It always looks crappy and drags down the rest of the model.
Think while it's still legal.

I don't know it looks pretty good bro, as good as Ruthven's ;). *runs away*

I honestly hate The FN P90 so much. I think it's the ugliest gun I have ever seen.

Although, you have made a very nice model of it, and I congratulate you. I personally think the scratches are cool, gives it a grubby look, like its been used quite a bit. I like the smoothness of it in some areas too. Some areas are a little too blocky for my taste, but still, nice job. Better than I could've done, and I don't even know the first place to start when modelling and texturing. Good work :)
Very funny Scotty. Now beam down my clothes.

Nice model, though the textures make it kind of cartoony. As those scratches go, try making them thinner, like one pixel wide, and instead of placing them randomly put them near corners and edges, where scratches actually occur. But still, very nice model. Is this part of something that comes after the pistol mod?

I think it looks great. I do agree though,
the textures could be considered a bit
cartoony. Other than that, it is really
cool. I don't know much about guns but
just seeing a gun that is so oddly shaped
which has a name for being held more
comfortably than any gun, makes me
want to shoot one. Congratulations.
Your model is good enough to have
raised my interest about something I
normally couldn't care less about. :)

I can't stand the FN90. It's so ugly!

That aside, this is a great model and texture job if you want to make a stylized product. If it's realism you want, you still have a ways to go.

Baby steps Grismath, baby steps. :-p
However, this little model here is going to go into Firearms, which will be redone from scratch basically, testings some things out, etc, after JK Pistol Mod and Aliens TC are completed. However, I did most of this texture, cept the clip, and I saw it and said, "I should finish that."
MP7.....mmmm...me thinks that I sho..... ;)

On a note about the scratches, if I made them 1px wide, than when I shrink it down to 256x256 (this skin is about 760x760), than they are overridden and vanish on the final texture. But, I did change the scratches alil, I wonder if you'll notice a difference. :p

And as always, whatcha think?

Can you get a pic with a better lighting? Closer to top-down? Right now the whole thing looks kinda cartoonish still, but I think that's just due to the lighting angle.

The scratches bother me, too. I can't decide whether they look like scratches or like metal chips lying on the gun. And like Ringmaster said, don't just distribute them randomly over the whole skin.

Stop putting fake scratches on your guns. They'd look better if they looked perfect, rather than very ugly in the way they're scratched.

The scratches look like they were done with a knife by hand. I would imagine that scratches on the gun from careless (or normal) use would be mostly straight and multiple scratch marks close together going in the same direction. Also, you might want to try and think were the scratches would logically occur. Imagine sliding the gun across a ceament floor and then imagine where the most scratches would occur. For instance, the piece in the center that pertrudes out around the clip, if you slide the gun forward across the floor, the scratch markes would start at the very edge and cover most all of the leading most surface (though maybe mostly on one side or the other depending on how it was tilted toward the floor at the time).

Maybe consider imagining running with the gun yourself and imagine yourself scraping it up against the wall, throwing it up on a ledge while you climb yourself up, etc.; make note of it and then go back and 'weather' the texture accordingly.

Just a suggestion.

 Yay, finally someone telling me what to do to make it better (Ringmaster, don't think I'm forgetting you too ;)). And with that knowledge, I now present to you this version. So whatcha think now? :p

Lock yourself in your room with no friends/gf's for 7 years.

Thats how i learned to make t3h guns.
I've switched to levels now, anyway.

The model is pretty much flawless, as always the key is to get as MANY high res reference pics to ensure you get it right. I had to make 5 or 6 p90's before i got it right.

As for textures, and the scratches, i stick to a certain method. PSP6's dodge and burn create the most realistic metal illumination/darkening effects i have ever seen. Start with a low contrast default texture, which has its own subtle scratches.

After you have the shape the model in the texture (uv) the trick is to make the texture realistically lit. I'll show u what i mean another time.

Oh, and... do not under-estimate the power, of.... photorape :p (or at least use translucent layers of photos to make it more realistic)

Keep it up.
