Here is a picture I made completely with
photoshop. This is a low quality version
of the picture. The original is 22" x 34"
at 300 pixels per inch (192 mb), but it
of course would not be good to post a pic
that would take 3 hours to download.
I made this for the school art fair.

If you have any trouble viewing it, it is
because I created it on a Mac computer.
Don't get offended all you windows
people. That's what our graphics lab
has. Besides, they really are very nice
computers (the brand new flat screen,
dual processor iMacs). Don't worry I
haven't converted to appleism. ;)

the sun i like.

The planets, not enough contrast on the lighting.

And the space.... needs some stellar dust, the stars need to be smaller, sharper, and the black more.... black? (maybe thats this monitor)

The sun/star still looks the best Oi reckon.

Not too fond of the image personally. There's several reasons for this, and I'll just go and list them.

The sun. While it has a nice texture, it's way too dark. If you come that close to a sun, you might be able to make out some smaller dark spots (or shells starting to cool down, like lava) but such a distinct texture? Very unlikely. The glow seems to me like you enlarged the sun and gaussian blurred it, which doesn't quite add to the realism.

The planets, then. First off - we're close to a sun, and the shadows on the planets do not indicate a second lighsource nearby. Therefore, the sun is the only thing lighting them. In such close proximity, the contrast in lighting will be very heavy. Next to that, the color of the sun would heavily affect the planet's colours, which I also don't see. The planet textures - well, it's a shame you went with merely gas giants. I'd have loved to see a planet with a surface and atmosphere, since those usually lead to the nicest textures in space art (save for complex nebulae).

As for the starfield, well - I'll just repeat what Ruthven said. Needs more black, more stars and more individual difference between the stars. Maybe indeed some space dust would add to the overall atmosphere.

However, these initial comments might be pointless, if I am correct in thinking you went for a more comic-book kind of look. The colors seem to indicate such, and the simple planet textures next to the overall lack of sharpness, would most certainly stand in for it. If not, well, then I hope that I actually made a useful post. :|

I like everything but the blue planet. Maybe a moon in front of it, throwing a shadow on it's surface, would improve it.

I wasn't exactly going for absolute realism.
If I really wanted realism I would make the
lighting in 3ds max or something but I was
just trying to make a cool picture. I agree
with the not black enough space thing and
the smaller stars and such. That would
have improved it. I would fix a few things
but I am really done with the project. I
guess I like the comic book idea.

Concerning realism:
I know it's not realistic. If those planets
were really as close to a star as they are
in this picture, they would be destroyed
by it's energy and by roche`s limit.

Concerning Enter:
I type this way because it is my style. I
started doing this to give my paragraphs
a more consolidated look rather than
having them strung across the screen. It
isn't anything personal.

Thanks for the crits guys. I'll keep these
things in mind next time I have a space
photoshop picture.

Actually, one can't be sure how close the planets really are to the star. Maybe they are at quite a distance, but really big...you can't even be sure about the order. The red one could be in front or behind the green one.
That's the problem with space...it's just out of our scope.

That's true. I'm not too worried about it. It
was just something to kill time. I had fun
with it. What else matters if that was my
goal?

I think it's very nice for being done with only Photoshop. Good job.

It's funny, but I don't get it. In serious
need of a laugh. Please enlighten.
