hey detty, instead of complaining , just be less restrained when it comes to handing out permabans left right and centre.

Anyhow, leaving the stormtrooper aside for the moment (with which I have no issues other than the incredibly stiff pose, so by all means, carry on).

The catwalk I quite like. It has all the makings of a cold steel structure that you've come to expect from imperial facilities. Now for some shiny textures on it. =D

You should know that most artists will see a difference between people who use them as a reference, use them for just a render, and people who use them for a movie which is meant to be publically displayed at a movie convention, as SF_Gold mentioned in the Discussion Forum. In example, I've put PSD files of my work on the internet before, though at lower size, but only as a reference. I would not want anyone putting them up for public display in a collage, not even if I was credited for it.

That is something only the author of the model can judge, and therefor, it seems logical that SF_Gold contacts him before moving on with the project.

Admittedly, some of us might have a little trouble explaining this and resort to the old-fashioned way.
2006-05-22, 12:38 PM #45
Actually, most artists upon providing source materials such as psd or model files, would express the terms of usage in the same place as where they are providing said resources. These days it'd usually be as a creative commons license. If the license specifies that for public usage permission is required, then permission is required.

Beyond that it's just down to manners.

The point is, Gold has stated that he didn't create the model, that's all we need to know as far as this thread is concerned. Sure, suggest he gets in touch with the creator to discuss how he is using the model, but beyond that we have no business getting on his case. Now gothix, you've been fairly civilised in this thread, but most other people haven't.

Some of you are telling him to give up because he's not good enough. Oh great, so you're just being bullies now? It's a fantastic idea to just nip enthusiasm in the bud before it has a chance to sprout into talent, all the people who make good stuff just started with skill.

Others are saying he should get permission, probably. But like he said, the fact that the model is publically available suggests it's intended to be used. It's a possibility that it's just as a reference, but let's not jump to these conclusions just as an excuse to flame someone.

Seriously guys, you are the reason this community is going to hell. You're intolerant, elitest and downright offensive.
And then there are those of us who insist he should just make the model himself. I even stated I thought he posessed enough skill to outdo the old model--that he was underestimating his skill--and I stand by that.

Maybe, as he so invariably asserts, he really isn't skilled enough. In that case he should attempt to improve himself (e.g., through http://forums.cgsociety.org/) rather than adhering to the tendency of borrowing work (a tendency which, I admit, nearly everyone feels when they are just beginning--but most people outgrow it).
2006-05-22, 4:32 PM #47
What usually happens is you borrow work up to the point where the work you do for yourself (ie that catwalk) matches up with the quality of your borrowed stuff, at this point you start doing it for yourself.

Everyone learns differently.

Yeah, but he's been doing this for quite some time now. In refusing to do meaningful work under the pretense of an "epic project" and borrowing crappy models he's shooting himself in the foot. With a grenade launcher. As a graphics designer who hates to see wasted effort and talent, I'm honestly just trying to help the guy.

He also will be entering said work into a contest if I am not mistaken.

That right there says that he needs to get permission first.

Thats not true. Technically, the authors text file that came with the model could say "Use this for anything you dont need to contact me"

Seriously. There are so many people who are ONLY posting in here because they dont like Gold. Just shut up and go away kthx

Ummm... were not entering a contest. Its a convention to speak about what we are doing, how we are doing and such. I don't believe I could remake a better stormtrooper in less than 5 months, so I think its best that I touch up this model as much as necessary. But after looking at that pic... it would seem that more than touching up is neccesary. I think I'll have to remake all the arms, and that means that I'll have to rig them again.

EDIT: Jepman... what exactly were we going to debate again?

I was totally harsh, I agree, and I apologize. But I stand by the fact that I'd be pissed at anyone who tries to steal other people's work. For some reason, it just happens to be a certain type of people...

the catwalk.. doesn't look that star warsy. it seems to be a mix of some tropical hut with grates for floors.

Texturing it will be a bigger challenge I assume.

I've seen people work on one player model + textures for months. I'm no sure hows he going to work on a complete environment being just one guy.

I haven't read the thread because I think I already know what it's about. That said, the only difference between the two models that I can tell (other than lack of a gun) is that you learned how to render/light between the two renders. The catwalk looks pretty cool, but you've got a ways to go (you already know that) and it perhaps doesn't look all that Star Wars-ish. Good luck with your project.

Ok folks... I think I'll start my own type of trooper. A mix between a shadow trooper, an elite clone trooper and a gorilla. If I don't like what I make, I won't show it, but likewise I'll be touching up this model as well, for a fall back just in case.

Thats all for now.
