I went with a Nikon D50 because I wanted something soon and it seemed like the best bang for the buck. I'm no photographer by any means, but I think I may want to be. Feel free to tell me what you think of the shots I've taken so far. I'm mostly interested in nature photography.

the first one reminds me of superman for some reason. classic shot, tractor, kinda run down, sort of the fabric of america

oh and hte cat shot is cool

The second one has the best composition.

The bright sun in the first one really takes away from it

Cats don't photograph well. Niether do dogs. The flash makes their eyes all freakish.
Wikissassi sucks.

Unless you know how to light the shot properly, then you dont need a flash. In fact, a flash directly is really only meant for pictures you dont really care about. Which is why when you get your portrait taken they ahve all of those lights pointed at reflective sheets for diffused light

The kitty looks as if it's about to be launched in outer space (where it belongs).

All of the shots were taken with available lighting. No flash was used. The cat is blind and has cataracts. That particular shot was taken on a futon that is next to a window with the sun shining in to the room. I agree with the sun beams taking away from the tractor shot. I liked the angle, but should have taken the shot earlier in the day when the sun wasn't in front of me.

Ouch...

Well that's...awkward.

Anyways, not bad for experimenting.

Emon, that photoshopping actually did improve that picture quite a bit. I think I may go try out that feature on a few of my bright/sunny pictures.

Yeah, they can be very useful. It's my understanding that the auto color, levels and contrast features are implemented with some sort of black magic.

D50 is a reasonable camera. not as capable as the D70s but reasonable. not too bad, really, but try like shooting with P mode off. try shooting in M. the camera's manual should tell you how to use the light meter. its pretty easy.

If yours looks like that you may want to see a doctor. Its not supposed to be covered in bark and sprouting twigs. Just a lil' FYI for ya

Once I get the hang of all of the functions I'll give M a shot. I'd kill for one of those 200mm lenses, a second battery pack, and a good carrying case. I didn't take any of that in to account when I bought it. :(

We should make a game where we come up with captions for the kitty picture.

ie:

"Surrender. Resistance is Futile."

or

"Killer was never the same after falling into that vat of radioactive waste..."

That's quite possibly one of the coolest things I've ever seen (sorry about the kitty being blind though).
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

I like the second shot best. The colors could've been more vivid perhaps, but the texture and composition is quite nice.
