Noise filter is cruise control for cool (and non-solid colors).

-If you fill something in with a solid color, it looks rediculous. Light noise overlay, and *poof* better looking.

But it shouldn't be as obvious as shred makes it. Noise should be used to break up a solid color, not be the backdrop to every single surface.

I think your sky decisions are bold and helpful, but I find space textures to push the limits of what is acceptable, even in video games. I may be wrong, but I doubt that so much of any galaxy is made up of nebulas, especially nebulas visible to the unaided eye.
2006-07-24, 9:50 PM #10
I really like the Gonk. But the texture on its side seems stretched.

Good work!

I don't care. Nebulas rock.

Actually it would be pretty cool if you can see more of the city of Nar in the skybox instead of an endless void of stars.

i agree, that would be sweet.

Also, the texturing on the droids looks weird to me.

Kirby, I usually respect you and what you say, but right now I don't think you're being very constructive. It really seems like lately you just bash shred because you two are no longer partnered in this, and I know I'm not the only one who sees this. Come on Kirb, you're a great editor as well, but there is room for more than one good editor in this community.

Edit: And to shred, I love every single thing, except the remote droid's texture seems a bit blurred and stretched for some reason, maybe it's just the shot though. And also, i agree that a little less denseness of nebulas and stars, and maybe a cityscape or something would make that look even better.

Could you please take a look at the JKE images on the hub? Particularly the cloth textures. I only mention the over-abundance of noise filter because the lower part of the Gonk and the mousebots are speckled in it like his cloth textures.

And I think Shred's awesome, I just usually don't spend my post going "I love how you did this this and this." I just post my criticism. He overuses the noise filter, amoung a few other things I've mentioned on other threads that got me the same response you gave me.

It's not the criticism about the noise. I understand that saying things like that is normal, and welcomed here on a showcase forum. That's what it's all about here, post your work, get info on how it can be improved. However, the comment such as:

I think was unecessary, and more of a stupid/pointless comment.

:psyduck:

There is no noise. Oddly enough, the couple models that do use a noise overlay never got any criticism. You are probably referring to the bump map and/or brushes I used on the texture. Like it or not, the greater the volume of work, the lower the quality. (since I don't have *infinity to work on this) It falls under the "good enough" category :)

- I'll probably darken the mousebot textures.
- There is no skybox. That is merely a texture replacement, so it has to tile horizontally as well as vertically. Which means no planet or city below, sorry.
- The conc works, because you can't compare it to something real, but the firey explosions need to look more realistic. I need some real explosion footage captured on greenscreen :P

Yeah, the conc is the one I liked most. The others might work, too...gotta see them ingame, in motion.

Looking very nice Shred, though I would like to repeat a few people on the mousebot, gonk, and remotes.

the problem with the mousebot is that it looks like it's made of speckled cement. I think that a texture more like the gonks would fit the mousebot much better, one that looks metalic. If your heart is set on the lighter grey color, then less speckles would still help a lot.
I don't know if this falls under what you're doing, but I'd like to repeat Yecti and point out that the Gonk doesn't walk by bending its legs. I'm not sure if that's something in your mod though, and if not, I guess I'll have to accept it (for now)
The remotes just don't seem to be of the same quality as the rest of your stuff. At the very least, could you fix the textures so that they don't look like they're at the last mipmap?

Anyway though, I've "complained" enough ;) Considering how much work you do and show, it's an amazing tribute to yourself that my list is so short. You have some fine work, very well done.

Not gonna repeat what's been said other than fantastic work. I can't believe the consistency and regularity of your updates.

The concussion sprite seems to start off with a frame that should appear later in the animation.

If anyone asked, here's my two cents.

I half-agree. It's JediKirby's skill and distinguishing excellence to level exacting feedback, no matter the degree of severity. It is unfortunate that on this particular occasion he jumped the gun and offered invalid criticism, but I still think it's a good thing that he is on his guard to keep his standards high, and that in turn talented editors like Shred can keep their workmanship at the highest level of quality.

I do not agree, however, that growing up has anything to do with it, nor that there is any behind-the-scenes feuding going on between Kirby and Shred. I would rather leave the Massassi soap opera out of this.
2006-07-25, 3:19 AM #31
I'm with Kirby: the noise bothers me. No matter which techniques were used...the result is still: noise. Maybe it bothers less ingame?
But anyway, it's still great stuff.

for the record, he didn't offer invalid criticism. He merely mistook the "bump map and/or brushes" for noise. His comment is still valid, it's just not caused by the reason he thought it was.

Note contradiction :psyduck: JediKirby may offer harsh critism, but it is still his opinion, and you can argue it out with him in a *respectful tone* even if the original wasn't in the best format. Show that you are trying to be a better person in the next post, this applies to everyone, for I try to apply it to myself as much as possible, and granted, we all fail from time to time.... However, I'm tired of hearing "grow up" and "unwarented" and like such, let the admin handle that part and worry about the models. Respect given is better than respect recieved. I hate sounding like I'm preaching too. :v:

However, I think whats goin on with the remotes is that they seem like they are very low polygon compared to what they could be, I would use a 16/18 sided sphere instead of a 12 sided (guessing). Not to mention they are smaller, so alot of detail is lost because there are less pixels used for them because of size comparison (assumptionish). Gonk animation needs to be that up/down (pneumatic?) motion to be Star Wars accurate. I think that repeater is abit plain still too.....tho perhaps I'm crazy lol. Tho I do love those micebots. hehe :P
