Here's the finished Pyro-GX in all it's wireframe glory

and the required dflt Jed preview

None of the textures are final, they are just there so you can actually see the model. :P

comments, critiques welcome

I don't know the Descent series very well, but your model seems to copy their unelegant style pretty good.

I'm thinking the engines could be rounder

ya, that was helpful...
could you possibly elaborate on what you find wrong?

[edit] well, it seems I misinterpreted that comment... [/edit]

He didn't say anything was wrong with it, just that it, like Descent, has an unelegant style.

I loved the first Descent as a kid. This looks really spiffy!

in other words, the model is just naturally unelegant? I've always liked it... oh well, people can have different tastes ;)

i like it, but i think it could benefit from better textures (Unless those are just placeholders)

From a modeler's perspective, it seems like you could've used more polys on the missles and/or engines (which btw aren't round, I dunno if this was suppose to be or not...the look like rounded squares I think..).

From a fan of Descent (my first videogame in 3d [followed shortly by Doom lol]), me likey, tho want more shots w/ diff perspective.

READ FIRST! These textures are NOT final. They are ripped from the Descent 3 Pyro-GX just so that you can see what it will look like finished.
If you are a texture artist and would be willing to reproduce these textures in higher resolutions I would be EXTREMELY grateful.

Now that that's out of the way.

The jagged edges are because I used Force Remap and didn't go back to touch up since the textures are of pretty low resolution in the first place.

And as for the engines not being round, I'll go back and fix that. It's not supposed to be that way, but I forgot to fix it. And I could go back and round out those missiles too with more polies.

And a question, do you feel that there's too many polies on the lasers, or is it fine?

I'd like to give it a shot

That is incredibly hot. I don't know what the other person meant, unelegant style. I always loved the style of the Descent ships, they look so sleek and smooth, and just plain cool. :D
DO NOT WANT.

I just need the originals to see the details, and maybe something to go by for how you are applying the textures to the ship.
2006-08-06, 11:07 AM #18
Ok, where would you like me to send them?
I can even send you a model viewer and the original model that I'm basing this from if you'd like.

I'm using force remap to put the textures on, that way I can map it to cull whatever areas on the texture I don't want to use.

They can look good without being elegant... elegance is like a mon cal cruiser, flowing and regal looking. this looks chunky and dependable, but not elegant.

that said, it still looks very good -_-
2006-08-07, 11:08 PM #20
Damn right. Descent ships were utilitarian and function-forward. They have no need for elegance.

That said, great model. I suppose some of the polygons could use a bit of touching up or additional deltailing here or there, but it depends on how much of the model we'll be seeing at any given time. At any rate, I'm looking forward to seeing what it is you've got planned here.

As for my history with Descent, I only managed to play the shareware copies of the first two games. I lived a long way from the stores, and it was those PC gamer sampler CDs or nothing else. Regrettable. Still brings back some good memories from the old days, though.
