Here's a couple of shots from my Smoke Rocks level, which is nearly complete. I started work on the skybox yesterday, just compositing random Google image searches in my photoshop-ish program to form my sky. :D I gotta fix a couple problems with perspective for some of the larger planets that span over 2 sides of the box, but besides that, it's looking pretty purple. :)

Really good!

Could look better with new high-res textures, though ;)

Oh yeah, I should have mentioned the high-res textures. The skybox texture is 768x768 for each side. I know, that's no 1024x1024, but it's still better than those ugly 256x256 ones. :P

The other textures used in the level are 512x512, such as the rocks and sand. All the 3do's have full LODs, with mip-mapped textures. So hopefully you'll only need a moderately fast computer to play with a good framerate. :D

It's looking pretty good but the only thing is, all the random lighting everywhere. I haven't seen one light source

Heh, good eye Zanardi. I'm in the process of placing industrial flood lights powered by generators. Also makes for some good ambient sounds.

Someone must have hacked SL's computer. How can he make a level that isn't a fullbright cartoon?

Looks very nice!

The skybox looks really flat. Aside from that, I need some tissues.

looks a lot like oblivion. but for all the razzle-dazzle with the high-res textures and models, the lighting isn't so hot.

The 3do's are amazingly well done, too bad that doesn't leave many lighting options.

Gorgeous. Perhaps the most impressive organic architecture I've ever seen in JK since Ortheza and Friend14. Keep up the good work Sith_Lord.

I'm not even gonna talk about lighting. You already said that it's temporary.

Is that a tree model? in the first shot? I'm going to pick on the tree (if it's a tree), because it's the only item in this whole creation (aside from the boxy seams on the skybox) that I think I could do better. Now hey, maybe it's an alien tree or something, but tree limbs tend not to grow like blades of grass: thin, but broad. I'd think rounder, more as though the tree were a slow-moving liquid jolted upward from a pool. Hope that helps.

Sadly, in spite of all your apparent effort to eliminate sharp edges...I can kind of still see a couple in the top right of the first shot. See that big rock? For what it does well, I like how it varies up the "horizon" line so it doesn't feel like you're in a large, rocky fishbowl. However, I think I can see some "fishbowl" action going on in the far left background.

If you wanna change that, you may. Seems like a lot of extra, tedious work. Some people love that, I know, but in gameplay, I don't think I'd even give a crit. I would love to play in this level.
2006-08-15, 5:15 PM #29
Oh, and it'd be more impressive if you could set the sky to scroll to give the illusion of planetary rotation. It would help the sky look less flat. (This approach will also have you turn your "skybox" into an "inverted-sky-trapezoidal-prism"...or ISTP, but don't ever call it ISTP. No one will know what you're talking about.)

Nice work! The textures are the best part though. This level has excellent mood! The tree model could be improved as was stated above.

I can't wait to see more then. Dynamic lights freaking sucked when I used them.
