So I am doing a random drawing project. I have ambitious plans, but if it all fails, I am out nothing (it's for fun). It's for a story I have been playing around with in my head for years now, and I figure I might as well give it a shot, just to get it out of my system.

So then comes this first scene. I am doing this in photoshop, using a tablet (and no real references to speak of, just some quick looks at things I'd like to imitate). Right now the clouds are mostly finished, although I tweak them randomly when something bothers me. The buildings are just a start, there will be much more (similar to an industrial facility) in that corner of the image.

In the black area will be the landscape, and if I can pull it off, a cliff edge near the bottom (As if you are looking out beyond the cliff towards the far off buildings, etc). I know the building still need some work (especially with the hard black) but at the moment I am most curious about everyone's opinions on the clouds.

The idea is this view will show a post-apocalyptic scene where everything is windswept, cold, and run down. For what it's worth, the area is non-toxic, but there's nothing for humans to live on (no food, little water).

If anyone wants details on the story idea or whatever, feel free to ask, but I am not going to post much as it's quite unrelated to this thread and I'd start rambling for pages >.>

Oh, and ignore the white line below the buildings, that's for reference :p

That'd totally be my wallpaper if it weren't for the white line. Looks cool.
DO NOT WANT.

I'm not digging those clouds.

I'd suggest you get ahold of the brush set made by Daniel Kvasznicza, a matte-painter who's had his share of industrial projects. The brushes can be found here and are meant to be used with a graphics tablet. I'm personally quite fond of them, they're useful for a lot of things, and it'll certainly make your work easier.

Does he have a guide on how to make the brushes? I'd rather make them myself than use premade brushes. (I'm not going for easy, this is just a fun project to learn from)

Your clouds look less like clouds and more like alien lights or something.

Still looks cool though. Just not so much lookin' like clouds.

They're mostly just rough shapes with a beepload of brush settings. There's plenty of tutorials on how to make brush tip shapes, though.
