Reqjec is a flash game that we are building for a school project. This version isn't final, but it is as much as we could accomplish in the 7 weeks we got.

We were with a team of five man of which one didn't do jack <poop>.
My job was the scripting. It was for me the first time I ever really scripted in Flash, so quite a challenge. Also special thanks to those who helped me on the code for elastic collision in the techforum.

Play the game here:

http://www.veddertheshredder.com/reqjec/reqjec_v1.html

It's 6 mb so on slower connections it might take a few seconds to load. And it doesn't have a loading screen, so don't freak out of you don't see something right away.

You'll need flash 8 player by macromedia. (It should ask to download it when you don't have it already)

Press the question mark for instructions on how to play the game.

We're probably going to work further on this if we can get more ECTS for it.

That's actually a pretty fun game. You should submit it to Newgrounds.

The collision detection is pretty bad in my opinion. Half the time I'd hit a ball only for it to continue moving in the same direction anyway.

You can't collide with balls that have a red glow.

Yeah, took me a while to notice the glow...
It's fun. I like abstract games.

The game has potential. Just needs to be finished

Good game. Tons o' fun.

The balls glow red when you don't hit them hard enough the first time, right?

447 :gbk:

The music needs to loop, and a few different songs wouldn't hurt.

VERY fun. I can't figure out what isn't "complete" though? I was also thinking that the bounce needs to be turned down a little bit. I can't seem to just tap balls very well. Also, a collision sound would be cool. As well, balls don't effect eachother unless one of them has been hit. 2 balls came in at similar angles, and instead of conflicting with eachother, they became invincible to my attack.

First tries and it's 1118 to 447, respective to me and you? Damn, I've gotta get out of the house.

1184.

You should let me throw certain types of orbs at the skull thingies to kill them. THAT would be cool.

This is REALLY addicting, especially if you can get good at it.

A health ball would be nice, and if you bounced it, you got health, or if you put it into the thing, it got health.

I think a white questionmark ball that causes different random effects when bounced or eaten by the thing would be cool.

Make your tool bigger/smaller
Invert controls
Blotch out the next color for a period of time

I was also thinking about a gravity version of the game where, if you've played the one button gravity game, you can hold the mouse button and suck in all balls around you, the let go to push them away.

also, big score-numbers and more rewarding sounds and a prettier background. If lots and lots of things were all happening at once, I think it'd be a little more interresting to look at. Maybe sparks or something for a correctly gotten color? I donno. More feedback.

This game is really pretty cool. However, I agree with the suggestion to make it more visually interesting, with better indications of the points you score and impacts and such. Also, the control of the cursor-thing should be more solid. Right now it's too precise and so the framerate severely affects it...so if i move it really fast it doesn't collide correctly with the balls..it'll appear on top of them and make them go crazy directions and weird speeds. I'm not exactly sure how you can fix that, maybe if you make it not precise to the cursor but PULLED by the cursor, to give it more physical presence. I bet that didn't make sense..you're a smart guy, you'll figure something out.

[Edit: and giv eme the option to turn off sound and/or music?]

Thanks for all the comments guys! I'm glad people seem to like it!

What currently is listed as possible improvents for a next version is:

- A more solid collision code. Sometimes balls get stuck on top of each other. Or when a red glow disappears while the ball is beneath the player it will act weird. Among some other minor issues, which have to be ironed out.

- Powerup balls. Ability to regain health. Bullet time. A weapon that can be used against enemies. Anything else which seems possible and fun.

- Graphical overhaul. (I'd like some feedback on this. Which parts do you like and which parts you don't?) Problem with this is unfortunately that if we continue developping this game it's most likely going to be just the game designer and me. So we won't have a really dedicated graphics designer. (Though some of what we had now is more or less a rush job as well.) The background was kinda stuck in at the last moment and the little scores in the middle of the screen need to be more flashy and rewarding

- Loading screen, perhaps with the instructinos there. Because 90% of the players don't bother looking at an instructions screen if they have to click on a button for it.

- Perhaps some web script that would allow us to store highscores. Though I have absolutely no experience with such things.

- A less random 'random number generator'. For both the colour of the ball and the spawn location. So both are more diverse.

I'm sure more ideas will follow, but as of yet it is unclear which of these ideas will make it to the final version. Or when we'll start working on it again. Ramon and I also have ideas for another flash game, with diferent goals and mechanics but which will also have the player bounce balls. (because face it, that's just fun and addicting)

2983. In the higher levels, it's a pain in the arse that the "dead zone" so to speak is so close to the baddies. Is there a level cap, or basically does it go until the balls spawn in the dead zone?

This is one of the funnest flash games I've ever played. I love it.

Got to level 11 first try with a score of 3512.

What a cool idea for a game! It did get boring after a while, though. Perhaps you could speed up the balls as the game goes on?

Yes eventually the game just becomes impossible because the inner circle will grow out of control.

What changes with each level is:

- size of the inner circle
- speed of the balls (balls have random speeds between two leveldependant limits)
- When the enemies spawn. (In the earlier levels it takes a while)
- Amount of enemies. (capped to 4)
- Balls are worth slightly more in higher levels
- In higher levels combo's give much higher rewards.

POWERUPS

everyone loves powerups and they give the game a deeper existance without modifying the base gameplay.

not necessarily cliche collectable powerups but bonuses of some sort - maybe for getting X number in a row or something. think along the lines of tetris when fully solid rows disintegrate.

an example might be sending all the non-matching balls away and sucking the correct ones in either as an instananeous effect or for a short time. just having them speed up and be a little autonomous gives the player something new to look at and keeps it fresh.

perhaps have a new type of ball that spirals in rather than coming in linearly. very easy to code unless ur strict on using linear velocity to move objects (perhaps spiral them in but if they are hit, they get punted off and resume moving linearly)

particle effects would really help spruce up the visual appeal, too

really cool-*** game though =)
