Elmo's Star Wars

Trying to capture that original "Star Wars" feeling: When buttons were huge and lacking any sense, when four TIE Fighters were a serious threat, and when main characters would not hesitate but shoot first...

With an all in-game Star Wars Intro...

and a Detention Block (NOT the Death Star one...)

Now give me some comments, ideas, and tell me about the things you liked about that original Star Wars experience.

If I didn't see dflt.mat I'd honestly think that was JO/JA. Nicely done.

Yeah, it looks really good. One thing, though, the textures look too smooth and soft. It kinda makes me think "Star Trek" instead of "Star Wars".

All the textures need a lot more on them. Those panels on the bridge need a lot more buttons.

Also, Imperial places have got to be brightly lit. That's part of the charm.

I always thought blast doors were neat. Like the one Han jumps through in ANH.

Every time I see that scene I think "What if he tripped doing that and the blast door crushed Harrison Ford."

Axis: It was probably made of dry wall or something, so probably nothing... except maybe a broken stage prop.

It would be cool if the floor lights in the detention block were more of an orange red than a white red. . .you know?

Did you stick dflt.mat into JO? Did you?
Wikissassi sucks.

I like it alot, but shouldn't the bridge be a little brighter?

I think it looks cool. Maybe the bridge could use some extralight as others suggested.

Looks damn fine. What's the project objective, exactly?

If I felt the need to nit-pick about anything, I'd throw in with the "doesn't have the lived-in feeling" crowd. But this is an ISD we're looking at. The Empire's got to keep everything spotless, if only for the sake of keeping up appearances. Still, a little bit of wear and tear couldn't hurt. And if I REALLY wanted to nitpick, those terminals in the crew pits are facing side-to-side instead of front-to-back. Chaos! Heresy!

I kid, I kid.

Now then, what did I like about that original Star Wars experience? Well, the worn and gritty thng is the start of it. There was just something about models that were built by hand and backgrounds painted in meticulous detail by a professional artist. When you looked at some of those things on film, you could see the ruse. But the fact that they were real, tangible objects always meant more to me. The glitz and glam and the endless potential of computer animation is all well and good, but it just doesn't have the same heart and soul, you dig? As for the actual stories, that's another thing. I always liked how the original trilogy was about an assortment of people from the underground that were always on the brink of losing everything. The powers that be destroy an entire planet populated by hippies just to make an example. A swarthy pirate guns down a gangster and simply walks out the door, fearing no reprocussions- and he turns out to be a hero in the end. Some young punk who likens himself a wizard knowingly runs off into several exceedingly dangerous situations because he belives he is doing the right thing, and each time he somehow scrapes by through some sleight-of-hand. The stakes were always high, and people resorted to extreme ends. They were simple pulpy stories that were easy to relate to. That was the old-timey Star Wars feeling. The new movies are fun in their own way, but sometimes it just feels like they try too hard. The old Star Wars sort of presented itself in a fantastic nature that was down-to-earth enough to make it comfortable to 'live in', so to speak.

Looks like I got a little carried away- can't see how it'll help, but I'll leave it as is. It was nice to say some of those things- helps to put it into perspective.

That said, I'll look forward to future updates. Keep 'em coming, and godspeed.
