Warning, big fat images ahead.

I used this to make this mockup. I plan to put a long white dragon in the blue box, but that's about all I can think of. It's still somewhat boring, and it uses rounded corners. But, again, I like it.

Suggestions? Complaints? Bribery? Longings for the old days when every showcase post ended with a stream of funny questions? Horny?

I don't like the color scheme. To me, brown associates with crap. Hence, so does your site. I like the actual design, though. Give it a nice banner and a better color scheme, and you'll have yourself a nice website.

Like mentioned before, brown = crap. What a terrible color to incase the site content.

All of your fonts that are used to form complete sentences still need to be brought down about 2 pts.

And it's still too cramped for my tastes...put some more space between those <p>s and <h>s...

You need new colors. Not only are the colors ugly, but there are too many of them. And it is too small, as zagibu already stated.

So it doesn't seem the colors are hitting it off to well with you guys.

Can you suggest a different scheme with the same layout? (The sizes for things will definetely be different. This mockup is much more for layout than sizes.)

Hey guess what! font issues!

What font are you using? It looks kind of squished.

It's arial narrow. I didn't particularly choose it. I'm just using it. This is a mockup.

Dude, I like the earth tones.

I'd just get rid of the blue.

The colour pallet itself isn't too bad. I saw a really nice site once that used pretty much those exact colours (unfortunately the site is gone now so I can't link it). The problem is that you're not using it effectively, they don't look like they're part of a particular theme. It basically looks like a bunch of colours put into different parts of the page rather than complimenting each other and building up a design.

Okay Mr Perfect. If youre going to even attempt to compare yourself to me, which you did before, dont use a lame excuse like "its just a mockup."

I meant "I'm just using it, so I'll be playing with fonts when it's in HTML form." Why are you so hostile about web design?

Im being hostile about how you go about making your designs

When I say you shouldnt use "its just a mockup" as an excuse, it really feels to me like youre just saying "I KNOW its bad, I just dont want to fix it right now"

Make more than one comp, I know I've told you this before. Usually your first idea isnt your greatest.

I still don't get what the big deal about fonts is. I'll never understand how one font can be "better" than another. Sounds like a lot of time wasted to something so stupid.

I already knew what it was called and that it's everywhere. That has nothing to do with what I said, but nice try.

It actually does.
Ive tried explaining this to you before.

One font will work better in some situations than others because thats what they are designed for.
I dont understand how you could say its stupid when its one of the biggest issues when youre designing something.

You can have a good design with only black and white.
You can have a good design without using a grid..

But if your product requires that you use text, there is absolutely no way of producing a good design if you use an unsuitable font.

Some fonts are more readable than others (Helvetica is better than Arial). Some fonts are only suitable at body text sizes because their forms were designed for specific purposes (Verdana looks terrible at sizes above 14pt but is very readable at smaller sizes). Some fonts are hinted for print and others for screen (Ariel and Times New Roman are print fonts. Verdana and Tahoma are screen fonts). Some fonts represent a jovial writing style (comic fonts) that would be inappropriate for use by a business because they suggest immaturity. Some fonts are based around specific shapes (Avant Garde is very circular), if a font emphasises a style used in the rest of your design it's more likely to fit well with it.

There is a reason good fonts cost so much, it's because they're so bloody important.

Why don't we all just settle that Freelancer doesn't know the first thing about good design and move on :p
2007-03-23, 2:36 PM #24
I think that's unfair to Freelancer, to say he knows nothing. Sometimes unsuitable fonts are deliberately chosen to prove a point, thus making an inappropriate design appropriate. No more of this "absolutely wrong" talk, guys, this is a matter of context--even if I happen to think you're all right about the font choices you make.
