Lighting Demo Reel 2007
2007-05-17, 5:14 PM #1
UPDATE: Finished an animated short film with my two buddies yesterday and submitted it to be considered as a team for FJORG!, which is an animation competition at SIGGRAPH (the biggest annual CG/animation conference). Hopefully we get in!

The film was specifically targeted to the judges; every team was required to submit a demo reel of its members' work, so we figured the best way to stand out would be by making fun of demo reel conventions. As such, there may be some inside jokes that non-animators won't get, but I think there's enough slapstick in there for a laugh or two:

FJORG! REEL: FJORG.mov — 12.3mb (quicktime required)

And here's what I've been up to, lighting-wise:

DEMO REEL: .mov — 10.8mb (quicktime required)

BREAKDOWN: .pdf — 31k

Very cool, although a lot of the scenes were very dark. My favorite was the kitchen and fruit still life.

What program did you use?

Cool stuff.
What did you use to texture and light? What type of machine did you use to do the lighting?

Those ARE pictures right?
If those are renders then... Wow.

I was hoping for more movement. :) Also, that character looks very out of place, since every other shot's scenery. But overall, pretty cool.

I like the kitchen a lot.

Most of the shots were rendered in Maya using the software renderer; I used mental ray for a few scenes (piano, kitchen, & deli guy). The textures originate from several web sites and are all photo-based, with modifications made in Photoshop.

For the most part I worked on a Mac G5, which may explain why some of the images are overly dark for you PC users (the default gamma is different). Or it could just be that I'm a contrast whore.

Koobie, I wish I had some animated scenes as well. The short film I'm working on right now (due in 19 hours!) requires a very neutral white lighting scheme... aka BORING... but next fall I should have some cool shots if I end up working on another film.

Glad you guys liked it. Hope I can get some animation up here in a few days...

For those of you waiting on the edge of your seats to see some of my lighting on moving characters, I added a fresh-out-of-the-oven animated short to my original post. I did a bunch of the character animation and all of the lighting for the short. Enjoy!

Real nice work on the animation. How long did it take to make?
