My take on the dark forces mortar gun. As with any model of JK gun some liberties had to be taken because it was based on a blurry 20x100 sprite. I had to improvise the system by which the actual mortar is fed into the chamber and how new shells are entered, but I think it still looks pretty faithful.

Given the polycount of 6000+ it doesn't seem suited for JK (though I could probably cut that down, and I've seen Ruthven and people get really highpoly models in), I guess JA is a possibility though someone else would have to texture it.

There's something I keep meaning to ask whenever I see one of your new models: Why do we never see them used in anything??? I think you may have answered this before, but is it because you don't make textures for them, or what?

The mortar gun did the most damage when you got it right next to your target, so I don't see how some kind of aiming assistant could be useless. And besides, it works more like a grenade launcher than an actual mortar, and plenty of grenade launchers have them.

I think he was refering to the fact that the sight is almost completely obscured by the chamber.
Of course I have no idea how you would acctualy hold a gun like that so it may acctualy not be, but either way...

It wouldn't really be obscured by the chamber, you hold it with the stock against your shoulder and your hand on the grip under the barrel.

the chamber on top is obscuring it, if those were rotated 30-45 degrees then the you could be able to use the sights in the area bettween the rounds

Interesting...considering the level of detail you're putting into the model, you really need to up the sides on your cylinders.

Looks promising though, should look good with a skin.

Amazing model, but I have to agree with Kirby. The last picture you just posted makes no sense - what's the point of an aiming sight on a gun if you have to hold the gun at an angle to see the sight (thus negating any possibility of accurate aiming, because the gun barrel and the sight are now out of alignment)? :v:

Why don't you either move the sight to the top of the loading chamber or make the sight longer? It is a fantastic model, really hope it gets textured.

Actually, I kind of like Genk's idea of rotating the chambers ... it would make the gun even more visually interesting, as well, I think.

As far as the first person mockup being "angled", that's because when you hold a gun on one side of your body and you want the barrel to be aimed towards something directly in front of you, you TURN THE GUN SLIGHTLY.

EDIT: I don't know why the gif has that little twitch.

Yes, that's how a gun is "angled" in a FPS, but when you, a real person, aims to shoot any gun, you hold it eye level and use the sight, straight on. Your sight would have been useless. Not to mention, you don't usually aim for precision with grenade launchers.

Well since this is a fictional gun (a handheld mortar to boot) for an FPS, the main issue should be how it would look in a game and not how practical a real version would be. Personally I think it looks better without the sight now that it's gone, regardless of its utility or lack thereof.

Seriously guys. Who the **** gives a damn whether or not it's practical in real-life, or could even be functional for that matter. I guarantee none of you were sitting there playing a Jedi Knight game and turned off your lightsaber because you couldn't fathom how such a thing would be possible. S51, it's an awesome model, and it should be left at that.

Because improvement is illegal. Look, no one disputes if Super's a good modeler or not. We're just saying that the sight was impractical. I for one enjoy when my games seem to be realistic, as opposed to layering on features that look like they do things. Most other gamers agree.

I completely understand, and yeah what you're saying makes sense. I just got a little pissed off at all the sarcastic comments in the thread and felt that it was starting to derail the thread. Asking for critiques at Massassi can be an author's worst nightmare sometimes and it's a shame to see that happen.

I like it. It needs more than 4 cylinders, but other than that it's pretty good.

Plus when the gun moves to the left in the animation, it goes in beat with the music I'm listening too. :D

Assuming you did ever put it in game, it would be really cool if the gun comes with 4 mortar shells, the barrels rotating and loading a new shell each time a shot is fired, and after the fourth shot - all four chambers are snapped out of the gun like disposables, and a new quad-chamber clips into the slot there. I don't know if that makes sense, I just have a really awesome image in my head of the reloading animation.

The butt of the gun looks really cool, but i think it should be mirrored horizontally, because then you could tuck the slant into your armpit. But yeah, maybe it's fired from the hip anyway, so it wouldn't matter...

I had thought of that idea and still sort of like it, but the main problem is how the hell are you going to carry a bunch of cartridges each containing 4 mortar shells? I guess it's sort of a pointless question since nothing about the gun is in any way realistic, but it just seems like if you had a bandolier with a bunch of shells on it and you reloaded them 1 by 1 into the chambers it would be a bit more doable.

I did a sort of prototype mortar-looking thing. I'm not sure I like it, but it does look more like a mortar than the one in DF, which was essentially a grenade.
