I figure I can't bother some people to actually download and view the vid I uploaded, so here it, YouTube'd. :D

But first, a screenshot:

And now the vid. :neckbeard:

The code has graduated from infancy to toddler, so it's not too impressive atm. (IE, hand/saber doesn't pitch when you swing)

More can be seen at the Live by the Force project page.

Oh wow. And what happens if you connect a Wiimote to your computer via Bluetooth to try this?

HOM

But yeah that's pretty cool. Kinda like a Die By The Sword sort of deal where movement of the mouse controls the blade?
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Hehe, yea, HOM, my camera is the culprit of that. Just slapping it where I want it disreguarding HOM possibilities for now. ;)

But yea, kinda like DbtS. Eventually it'll get there, and beyond. :)

[Edit: DbtS is how I came up with the name of the mod too ;)]

That looks really cool, but how hard is it to control? If you use the mouse to control the saber, do you have to look around using the keyboard? Have you found a cool way to move it in all three planes so you could thrust too, or is it restricted to only up/down left/right?

Ya, you've got my curiosity built up now.
2007-09-30, 12:51 PM #11
If you hold down fire1, look left/right/up/down moves the arms and currently it only moves the saber accordingly. Thrusting would be cool, but I'd like to get basic swing/defend mechanics and network play ironed out before trying anything fancier. ;) If fire1 isn't pressed, the mouse lets you rotate and look up/down.

As far as being hard to control, I suppose that's up to the user. It doesn't feel loose but I myself have gotten used to it. You can invert the mouse Y axis for swinging so if you expect mouse down to move the saber up, you don't have to worry about reprogramming yourself. ;) Sensitivity is another thing I'll have coded in, along with an (optional?) 'swing guide' that will pick up the first few... points... and extrapolate a direction to go in no matter how you move the mouse. So if the first few plotted points are in a horizontal direction, after the extrapolation, you will continue along that line no matter how you move the mouse. It's still an idea, so I'm not too sure how it'll work out or feel yet.

I hate to say this, but Tiberium_Empire is right.

This is unbelievably awesome. (even though I think mouse-controlled sword fighting isn't intuitive)

You should find a way to animate Kyle's posture while his arms are moving, so it doesn't look like they're detached from the body. For example, moving mouse up should make him tilt back a bit.

Curious, why wouldn't it be intuitive? It seems like the mouse is the obvious interface choice to me. ;)

I don't have to find a way. :colbert: I already know how. ;) I just want to get all the movement basics in before factoring in the torso mesh in the IK code. When I'm done it'll rotate to the left/right a bit, like a real person would, to allow for more range of motion.

And I swear I'll show stormies getting cut up in the next vid. :neckbeard:

Oh, and thanks for the 'feedback' guys. :)
