3D Studio Project: Helm's Deep
2007-10-26, 12:16 AM #1
Hi, I'm working on a project in my class now(alone) in 3D Design & Animation.
Haven't modeled in 3D Studio Max before, but I have my experience from JK editing :D
We have one month to model some architecture, and I thought I should go for something else than another kitchen or living room(we can do exterior as well).
This is the first project in which I'll be graded.

This is why I haven't done any more work on my SP level for the contest here.

so far it's pretty fricking sweet, any detailed shots of the keep itself?

as for doing a famous set for a class project, it just kinda seems like a lack of creativity, if perhaps you used LOTR inspired arcitecture to create your own castle or something it might seem like a better project for school.

but it still looks really good from that shot.

I know, but we had to model from a reference picture of our choice.
That's why.
I would have liked to make a scene from my own mind, but then I would have to do some seriously nice perspective concept art and the teacher would have to approve it.
Anyway, I am working on smoothing the edges so they don't look as hard.
The whole project have to be finished by November 7.

Oh, and for the details... It's really low-poly, because the final render is going to be at about the same distance and angle as in the one I posted.

The terrain looks nice, something i would've expected out of Bryce, rather than 3DS.

That is really nice. It's actually pretty incredible that it's your first time in 3DSMax also. I've tried tinkering around with it and I just haven't really had the time to fully get in to the program. After working with JED for so long, it really throws off your basis of knowledge for editing with any other program.

For real modeling, sure. For terrain and skies, I like it.

Thanks!
Dark_Knight: We have some great teachers here.
Did some more work before texturing(have to tweak the terrain a bit though).
I have rounded off some edges, shortened the bridge and lowered the left wall.

That is awesome! Did you create those textures yourself or just get them from some online texture database. Either way it looks very nice, good work, and if your professor isn't some elitist freak then I'm sure you could expect an A.

Edit: I also just realized how remarkably similar that looks like the location of the Mako reactor in the Nibelheim Mountains from FF7.

They're from cgtextures.com(several textures I mixed in photoshop).
I still have problems with the textures stretching(the mountains), so I'm trying to figure out how to fix it in the most time-efficient way.
There's a lot of work to be done to make this look more realistic.

do you have a specific reference photo you're using? If so can we see it?

anyway, looks very cool.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

And now for something completely different. Helm's Deep:

I have worked more on the textures(still a lot to tweak) and I'm quite happy with the lightning.
Sorry, but there's still no hole in the wall(the small one before it got broken).
I'm not sure if I'm going to go for the bluish tint in the movies.

This is seriously unbelievable for your first time in 3DSMax. As FGR said, (but edited for a little more oomph) it's fan-****ing-tastic.

This is getting really good. Maybe it's just the angle, but I think it needs something to signify scale because it looks kind of toyish right now.
2007-10-31, 8:51 PM #19
I think it's exactly what you said, the angle. If you notice his two reference pictures, the first one at the lower angle just feels so much larger in scale, whereas in the second reference picture it's a top-down view which makes it seem more like a model or toy.

I think it might be slightly better if you try to match more of the angle from your first reference pic. Obviously you don't have to try to get it exact, but it might make it look nicer in the end.

[Edit] I just realized that in your previous WIP screenshot where the fortress was untextured you had the angle almost exactly the same as that reference pic. Perhaps you felt the current change was better?

I just thought it was a cool angle with the mountains in the foreground.
Reminded me of some concept art.
The final render will probably be in the same angle as the previous posted pictures.

Only the 2 months I've been at school, learning the basics.
The only real 3D experience I have is from JED/ZED, JKEdit, Worldcraft, JK2Radiant(or whatever it's called) and UnrealED(1st game(but very little)).

By making levels you get to understand a bit about creating something in 3D space(in the computer). :)

As stated, this is looking really amazing! While I don't know if you need the bluish tint you're talking about, your wall textures could be darkened a little. I also agree with trying a few different angles and seeing what shows off the scale a little better. Keep up the good work!

I think he's referring to the blueish night that it was during the scene in the movie:

I say try it out, it may add for a more dramatic effect. It would especially make it feel more like a location rather than just a scene.

This is a wonderful shot, new detail is good, but I really feel the jagged rocks next to the curved ramp loss their natural feel.

You mean above and behind? Or do you mean 'next to', like to the right of the ramp?

Btw, I just noticed that the transition between the mountain and the ground doesn't look right. I will try to fix that as well.

This project has to be finished by tomorrow and I haven't started on my presentation.

Ah... :D

I made it like that, because my teacher said it should be more edgy. Look like it's dangerous to fall down instead of just sliding down the mountain.
I liked the Mordor-ish jags it got, but since this is in Rohan(I think) I should probably soften those a bit :)

Can you promise to make a 1680x1050 wallpaper when you're all said and done? (Day & Night). Pleeeease? :)

Oh, and I did have one last comment, I noticed the water in your pictures has been gradually improving, but it's still pretty hard to notice. I think you should make the dirt under the water much darker since it would be wet, and maybe make the water itself less transparent. Also, I can't remember perfectly, so there may be a reason for this, but shouldn't the water continue beyond the wall? Right now it looks like it's just coming out the exterior, but you cannot see the stream/creek going into the interior side of the fortress.

MUCH better. And I definatly would say go with a night and day version so that people may enjoy the detail to its fullest in the day version.

It's actually going on both sides of the wall, but I will try making it less transparent.
As for high-res wallpaper... You'll have to wait after I'm done, because the final render is going to be 1024x768(it's pretty strict when it comes to resolution I think).
I'll render them after I'm done with the project :)
