The Table

So, I'm a poor student who can't afford furniture. The solution? Get your best friend to help you build a coffee table.

The frame is wood, wrapped in vinyl. The top is tile over plywood. The tiles themselves are more of a slate-type grey, they came out pinkish in the pictures because of the poor lighting in my basement.

OMG IS THAT JK?!

Looks nice. How much did it cost for materials?
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Thats pretty cool, is it sturdy?

It's sturdy as hell. That was the main goal for the project. I want it to be able to stand up to a ton of abuse. Doesn't wobble at all, if it starts to I'm probably going to do braces halfway down the legs.

When all was said and done, materials ran about $75 Canadian, taxes included. That was to buy everything, tile grout, screws, you name it.

Thanks for the compliments! We're pretty proud of it.

What about the opportunity cost of your time? Was it really worth it? :ninja:

:argh:
Really, it wasn't too bad though. It probably took about six hours to build, and it was a good experience.

I wouldn't build another, though, unless someone was going to pay me over $1000 ;)

If at least two drunk chicks can stand on it and not crack or collapse, it's solid.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I see no reason why it wouldn't be able to handle that. I'll have to try now, of course..

2008-01-10, 12:27 PM #13
Damn straight. How do you think I can afford that stuff? By buying/building cheap furniture, of course ;)

It's always worth it to do it yourself instead of paying for materials/labor/store costs. What about the opportunity cost of his time spent making the money to just buy expensive furniture?

If you wanted to dress it up a little, get some moulding(sp?) and bring a lip up around the tile so it looks like it has a 'frame' around the tile if you will... i don't know how much sense that makes though.

No, it makes sense, and we'd considered it. I decided against it because I think it looks fine without, and a lip would cause problems when card games and such are played on it.

It looks nice except that vinyl wrapping over wood is tacky. :barf:

To each their own, I suppose. I don't like the way paint would have looked, so we decided to give this a try.

Heh, I had the same thought when I saw the other table thread. Good idea ;) I'll do it.

Heh, thanks. The friend has been my best friend since we were a year old, we help each other out with stuff like this whenever we're able. It's great to have such a good friend.

And thanks, to the rest of the new posters who commented.
